Book Synopsis Surface and Interfacial Aspects of Biomedical Polymers by : J.D. Andrade
Download or read book Surface and Interfacial Aspects of Biomedical Polymers written by J.D. Andrade and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide a fundamental basis for the study of the interaction of polymers with living systems, biochemicals, and with aqueous solutions. The surface chemistry and physics of polymeric materials is a subject not normally covered to any significant extent in classical surface chemistry textbooks. Many of the assumptions of classical surface chemistry are invalid when applied to polymer surfaces. Surface properties of polymers are important in the development of medical devices and diagnostic products. Surface properties are also of vital importance in fields such as adhesion, paints and coatings, polymer-filler interactions, heterogeneous catalysis, composites, and polymers for energy generation. The book begins with a chapter considering the current sources of information on polymer surface chemistry and physics. It moves on to consider the question of the dynamics of polymer surfaces and the implica tions of polymer surface dynamics on all subsequent characterization and interfacial studies. Two chapters are directed toward the question of model polymers for preparing model surfaces and interfaces. Complete treatments of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy are given. There is a detailed treatment of the contact angle with particular emphasis on contact angle hysteresis in aqueous systems, followed by chapters on interfacial electrochemistry and interface acid-base charge-transfer properties. The very difficult problem of block and graft copolymer surfaces is also discussed. The problem of theoretical calculations of surface and interfacial tensions is presented. Raman spectroscopy is considered as an analytical technique for polymer surface characterization.

Book Synopsis Polymers in Medicine II by : E. Chiellini
Download or read book Polymers in Medicine II written by E. Chiellini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers and polymer based composites have gained increasingly larger applications in medicine and surgery. Presently, most biomaterials applications rely on industrial substances that were initially developed by industry for non-medical purposes. Moreover, polymers have been often used regardless of their peculiar characteristics which can be viceversa and very attractive for some specific applications. In the past years we have assisted to a significative and faster development of polymer science as well as of medicine and surgery. The assistance of computer aided apparatus, the use of always more advanced instruments, the larger interest of the academic and industrial world, bring continuously new contributions to the research on biomedical and parmaceutical use of polymers. The need of a forum where these specific researchs can be presented and discussed, and the success of the 1st Conference on Polymers in Medicine, held in Porto Cervo in 1982, have encouraged the Editors to plana periodical meeting, focused on polymers and composites, to be held every odd year. This book contains papers selected by an International Scientific Committee among those presented at the 2nd International Conference on Polymers in Medicine, Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Applications, held in Capri, Italy, 3-7 June, 1985. In addition to contributed papers, several Authors were invited to present the "state of the art" as well as their personal contibution on specific key arguments. The level of all contributions was high, the participation well qualified, and the meeting interesting and hopefully pleasant.

Book Synopsis Principles of Chemical Sensors by : Jiri Janata
Download or read book Principles of Chemical Sensors written by Jiri Janata and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-08-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: viii The danger is that the result so obtained may be an experimental artifact. Another approach is to examine in as much detail as possible the principles underlying the operation of a new device. This may not lead to a new sensor immediately, but those developed along these lines tend to be more reliable. The accent in this book is therefore on the principles behind the operation ("the trade") rather than on a description of applications ("the tricks of the trade") of individual sensors. In this respect it is written for students at both graduate and upper undergraduate levels. Approximately one semester's worth of material is presented. The book may also be useful for scientists and engineers involved in the development of new types of chemical sensors or for those who discover that "somebody else's sensor just does not work as it should" and wish to know why. The book is divided into five sections dealing with the four principal modes of transduction: thermal, mass, electrochemical, and optical, as well as a general introduction common to the four types. I have included five appendixes, which are intended as a quick reference for readers who may not possess sufficient background in some areas covered in the main text. I have run out of symbols in both the Latin and Greek alphabets. In order to avoid confusion and ambiguity I have confined the use of a set of symbols to each chapter and provided glossaries at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis Interfacial Aspects of Multicomponent Polymer Materials by : David J. Lohse
Download or read book Interfacial Aspects of Multicomponent Polymer Materials written by David J. Lohse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August, 1996, the ACS Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering hosted a symposium on Interfacial Aspects of Multicomponent Polymer Materials at the Orlando, Florida, American Chemical Society meeting. Over 50 papers and posters were presented. The symposium proper was preceded by a one-day workshop, where the. basics of this relatively new field were developed. This edited book is a direct outcome of the symposium and workshop. Every object in the universe has surfaces and interfaces. A surface is defined as that part of a material in contact with either a gas or a vacuum. An interface is defined as that part of a material in contact with a condensed phase, be it liquid or solid. Surfaces of any substance are different from their interior. The appearance of surface or interfacial tension is one simple manifestation. Polymer blends and composites usually contain very finely divided phases, which are literally full of interfaces. Because interfaces are frequently weak mechanically, they pose special problems in the manufacture of strong, tough plastics, adhesives, elastomers, coatings, and fibers. This book provides a series of papers addressing this issue. Some papers delineate the nature of the interface both chemically and physically. The use of newer instrumental methods and new theories are described. Concepts of interdiffusion and entanglement are developed. Other papers describe state-of-the-art approaches to improving the interface, via graft and block copolymers, direct covalent bonding, hydrogen bonding, and more.

Book Synopsis Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes by : John Davies
Download or read book Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes written by John Davies and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes describes four surface analytical techniques for probing dynamic, in situ processes at the biomaterial interface. The book presents the theoretical basis and biomaterial applications of: Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TIRFS) Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Ellipsometry Dynamic Contact Angle (DCA) analysis This book is not a review, but a practical description of the techniques to enable the biomaterialist to assess and intelligently use any one of the methods described. It deliberately avoids addressing expensive or non-dynamic tests, and concentrates instead on the growing field of biomaterials. Theory is presented in a simple and readable manner, experimental procedures are described, and the type of information obtained is discussed. It is written not just for the avid or interested reader but also, and perhaps more important, for the end user.

Book Synopsis Spectroscopy in the Biomedical Sciences by : R.M. Gendreau
Download or read book Spectroscopy in the Biomedical Sciences written by R.M. Gendreau and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this book a collection of manuscripts - is to provide general descriptions of analytical techniques which we believe to be useful to the biological scientist, and to provide examples of the utility of each technique. The contributing authors were asked to focus on examples in which their particular technique has proven particularly useful in studies of biological systems. Many commonly used analytical techniques such as NMR and ESR are not included in this work, it is preferred to focus on techniques which perhaps have not received as much coverage as in the recent literature. All of the analytical tools covered in this volume have great utility, and the scientific community can expect to see increasing usage of most if not all of these techniques.
