Book Synopsis Africa after Modernism by : Michael Janis
Download or read book Africa after Modernism written by Michael Janis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa after Modernism traces shifts in perspectives on African culture, arts, and philosophy from the conflict with European modernist interventions in the climate of colonialist aggression to present identitarian positions in the climate of globalism, multiculturalism, and mass media. By focusing on what may be called deconstructive moments in twentieth-century Africanist thought – on intellectual landmarks, revolutionary ideas, crises of consciousness, literary and philosophical debates – this study looks at African modernity and modernism from critical postcolonial perspectives. An effort to sketch contemporary frameworks of global intersubjective relations reflecting African cultures and concerns must resist taking modernism as a term of African periodization, or master-narrative, but as a constellation of discursive and subjective forms that obtains upon the present moment in African literature, philosophy, and cultural history. Africa after Modernism argues for a philosophical consciousness and pan-African multiculturalist ethos that operate, after the deconstruction of Eurocentrism, beyond self/other paradigms of exoticism or West/Africa political ideologies, in dialogue with postcolonial approaches to cultural reciprocity.

Book excerpt: [This book is written in French.] Alain Jouffroy presents a series of letters and texts written by Rimbaud during his stays in Cyprus, Yemen, Arabia and East Africa. There Rimbaud did not so much escape Europe as recreate and incorporate the existence of a sunny world, independent of all Western borders. A search for happiness too often inaccessible.

Book Synopsis Operation Rimbaud by : Jacques Godbout
Download or read book Operation Rimbaud written by Jacques Godbout and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Governor General's Award winner Patricia Claxton comes a new translation of a tale of intrigue, impiety, and insurrection by Quebec's original literary lion, Jacques Godbout. Thirty-five-year-old Michel Larochelle, an agnostic Jesuit, sees his membership in the Society of Jesus in unconventional terms: as a cover for all manner of clandestine activities, as he travels the world and samples its many earthly delights. At the end of the 1960s, and with liberal expression reaching its peak, it seems almost anything is available to this peripatetic man of the cloth. So when Larochelle is personally chosen to execute a secret mission dubbed 'Operation Rimbaud' on behalf of Haile Selassie, Ethiopia's venerable King of Kings, he doesn't hesitate. Aware of an imminent coup threatening the kingdom, Selassie entrusts Larochelle, along with Selassie's alluring daughter, with the perilous task of overseeing the safe removal of precious artifacts from the country - the original stone tablets bearing the ten commandments. Honouring his personal adage to kill only when necessary, Larochelle keeps the tablets intact while managing to violate nearly every law they dictate on a wild romp through the African wilderness, pursued by all manner of marauding outlaws, and haunted by the ghost of one of its most famous visitors, Arthur Rimbaud.
