Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ionic liquids have only been studied in depth during the last decades, the field is now maturing to such a degree that the focus is on larger scale applications for use in real processes such as catalysis. Current information is scattered across the literature and Catalysis in Ionic Liquids provides a critical analysis of the research published to date on ionic solvents in all areas of the catalytic science. The book covers both catalyst synthesis using ionic liquids as solvents and green syntheses using both ionic liquids as well as mixtures of ionic liquids and carbon dioxide (as a subcritical and supercritical liquid), including enzymatic, homogeneous, and heterogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis and organocatalysis. As well as the catalysis community, the book will also be of interest to postgraduates, postdoctoral workers and researchers in academia and industry working in organic synthesis, new materials synthesis, renewable sources of energy and electrochemistry. Written by leading experts in the field, this is the reference source to find about catalysis in ionic liquids.

Book excerpt: The separation of catalysts from solvent and reaction products remains one of the major disadvantages of homogeneous catalytic reactions. In this book we explore a system where a catalyst is dissolved in a thin film of an ionic liquid and this is supported within the pores of a microporous silica. This supported ionic liquid phase catalyst is then placed in a tubular flow reactor, similar to that used for heterogeneous reactions. The raw materials are injected into the rig, passed through the reactor and the products collected at the other end of the rig. Supercritical CO2 is used to transport the raw materials and products along the catalyst bed, allowing a continuous flow mode with low leaching of catalyst and ionic liquid. This system was applied to metathesis, carbonylation and hydrogenation reactions. Furthermore the synthesis of mesoporous silica materials and Rh/Pd hybrid catalysts are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Few definitive examples of ionically supported anionic transition metal complexes for use in catalysis have been reported, even though there are several advantages to be gained from such systems. To demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of such materials in catalysis, we investigated the (Rh(CO)2I2)- catalyzed carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid. The ionically supported (Rh(CO)2I2)- species was found to be equal in catalytic activity to the homogeneous complex, and leaching of the catalyst could be eliminated by suitable choice of solvent and resin/rhodium ratios. Additionally, we investigated the usefulness of a solid phase acid in catalyzing the formation of CH3I from NaI (NaI by itself is inactive). We found this acid catalyst was active in this regard, and that the acidity was retained within the solid phase. These experiments suggest a general application of anion exchange resins as a mechanistic tool for detecting catalysis by anionic species in homogeneous processes. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book looks at new ways of tackling the problem of separating reaction products from homogeneous catalytic solutions. The new processes involve low leaching supported catalysts, soluble supports such as polymers and dendrimers and unusual solvents such as water, fluorinated organics, ionic liquids and supercritical fluids. The advantages of the different possibilities are discussed alongside suggestions for further research that will be required for commercialisation. Unlike other books, in addition to the chemistry involved, the book looks at the process design that would be required to bring the new approaches to fruition. Comparisons are given with existing processes that have already been successfully applied and examples are given where these approaches are not suitable. The book includes: - New processes for the separation of products from solutions containing homogeneous catalysts - Catalysts on insoluble or soluble supports – fixed bed catalysts - continuous flow or ultrafiltration - Biphasic systems: water - organic, fluorous - organic, ionic liquid – organic, supercritical fluids (monophasic or biphasic with water, organic or ionic liquid) - Comparisons with current processes involving atmospheric or low temperature distillation - Consideration of Chemistry and Process Design - Advantages and disadvantages of each process exposed - Consideration of what else is need for commercialisation

Book excerpt: Ionic liquid/scCO2 biphasic systems have been studied as a possible solution to the main problems concerning homogeneous catalysis reactions such as, the product/catalyst separation, the catalyst retention in the reaction medium and the use of organic solvents. The hydroformylation of long chain alkenes (1-octene) has been carried out as a continuous flow reaction using [OctMIM]Tf2N (OctMIM = 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium, Tf = CF3SO2) as the reaction solvent and scCO2as the mobile phase to extract the products. The performance of the rhodium complexes formed with the ionic ligands [PentMIM][TPPTS] (1-pentyl-3- methylimidazolium tri(m-sulfonyl)triphenylphosphine) and [OctMIM][TPPTS] (1-octyl-3- methylimidazolium tri(m-sulfonyl)triphenylphosphine) is described under different sets of experimental conditions. Continuous flow hydroformylation of 1-octene was also carried out using a SILP (Supported Ionic Liquid Phase) catalyst formed with the TPPTS-based ionic ligands named above. The SILP system described in this work has the peculiarity of introducing the "without gases" approach: syn gas was synthesised in situ by the decomposition of formaldehyde. The performance of both systems is compared in the end. The extension of the continuous flow ionic liquid/scCO2 biphasic system is shown with the optimisation of the silver-catalysed heterocyclisation of furans. A comparison is carried out with a previously developed and optimised continuous flow heterogeneous system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chemical reaction engineering approach is applied to the hydroformylation of 1-octene using lipophobic complexes of rhodium prepared from Rh(CO)2(acac) in ionic liquid phase ([Bmim] [PF6]) or in the ionic liquid phase supported on silica. As the reaction is controlled by the concentration of the reagents in the catalytic ionic liquid phase, the concentrations of both gases (H2 and CO) and also of 1-octene are measured at various temperatures and pressures as an initial step. Different methods are used for the measurement of the olefin solubility inside the ionic liquid: thermogravimetry and multiple headspace chromatography, in the presence of solvent (decane) and reaction product (nonanal). The gas-liquid mass transfer, which can be a rate controlling step in these viscous media, is also measured by a dynamic technique of pressure variation, both in case of pure ionic liquid and biphasic mixture of ionic liquid and organic phase, in an autoclave reactor with self induced stirrer. A general correlation is proposed showing the strong influence of the agitation speed. A kinetic study is realized in no gas-liquid nor organic-ionic liquid mass transfer limiting conditions (chemical regime) with TPPTS as ligand. The usual hydroformylation behaviour is observed, as already found in organic phase or in aqueous phase: order close to 1 for H2, inhibition by CO at large concentration, and high activation energy. If the turnover frequency is suitable (70 h-1), the n/iso ratio is very low which is not favourable to this catalytic system. Some experimental results also allow a first analysis of biphasic catalysis with sulfoxantphos ligand and of ionic liquid phase supported catalysis with TPPTS ligand.
