Despite the fact that VSS are not legally binding, in order to be a part of global value chains, they have become de facto mandatory, and non-compliance may lead to exclusion of producers from the value chains. The relevance of VSS is reflected by a growing literature across social sciences, in particular economics and political science. This paper describes a new database that collects comparable information on 180 standards and their governance structure, across a wide range of products and countries. We conduct a first empirical analysis of this data with a primary focus on two aspects of standards and their governance: their practices and features in support of producers, and their geographic availability. We find high variability of support and availability across standards systems and countries respectively. Finally, we identify standards- and country-specific features associated with higher support to producers and higher geographic availability.

It has caused firms to be confronted with rising public attention to this particular subject. In order to cope with the mentioned development, companies started to manifest the sustainability of their operations in widely used voluntary sustainability standards today. However, the fact that supply chains have rather become complex supply chain networks nowadays hampers the process of successfully ensuring compliance with these standards. Besides, in the perception of consumers any breaches of sustainability standards in the supply chain fall back onto the brand owner, and subsequently pose major risks to buyer companies. Thus, buyer firms eagerly seek to enforce their standards throughout the supply chain. Among other factors the power distribution between the players in the supply chain has an impact on the likelihood that buyer companies manage to enforce their sustainability standards. The thesis at hand therefore investigates the influence of different power relationships in the supply chain on the compliance achievement process. In that course the buyer, supplier, sub-supplier triad is analysed in depth as an excerpt and simplifying approximation of the focal supply chain network. Five case studies are subsequently reviewed in order to come up with propositions of which power circumstances support the buyers' endeavour to successfully ensure compliance with their sustainability standards.

Given the dense inter-connectedness of economic affairs globally, the use of sustainability standards has become a concern of global governance, who face the challenge of achieving a balance between the use of standards for genuine sustainability objectives, and not allowing them to turn into instruments of protectionism or coercion.The emerging economies, given their increasing engagement with the global economy, are most impacted by the use of sustainability standards. The emphasis of ‘emerging economies’ in this book is retained both by using case studies from these economies and by collating perceptions and assessments of those located in these economies. The case studies included span sectors such as palm oil, forestry, food quality, vehicular emissions and water standards, and address the problems unique to the emerging economies, including capacity building for compliance with standards, adapting international standards in domestic contexts and addressing the exclusion of small and medium enterprises etc. Complex interfaces and dynamics of a global nature are not limited to the thematic of this book but also extend to the process through which it was written.
