Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is evidence that some Kansas mixes, which have performed well in the past, will not meet the currently proposed design requirements for a Superpave level I mix. The major problem is low voids in the mineral aggregate (VMA). The major reasons for low VMA are the high amounts of natural sand currently used and the higher compactive effort required by Superpave compared to 50-blow Marshall compaction. Cores, plant produced (field) mix, the original aggregates and asphalt cement were obtained from four low volume pavements. The cores established the in-place density of the pavements. The field mix was compacted in the Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) to establish the number of gyrations required to reach the field density of the mix. The aggregates and asphalt cement were obtained and Superpave mix designs were performed. The void properties were evaluated at the original and revised Ndesign gyrations. The effect of reducing the ram pressure from 600 kPa to 400 kPa was evaluated as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everything that sustains us – grown, mined, or drilled – begins its journey to us on a low-volume road (Long)." Defined as roads with traffic volumes of no more than 400 vehicles per day, they have enormous impacts on economies, communication, and social interaction. Low-volume roads comprise, at one end of the spectrum, farm-to-market roads, roads in developing countries, northern roads, roads on aboriginal lands and parklands; and at the other end of the spectrum, heavy haul roads for mining, oil and gas, oil sands extraction, and forestry. Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction, and Maintenance gives an international perspective to the engineering design of low-volume roads and their construction and maintenance. It is a single reference drawing from the dispersed literature. It lays out the basic principles of each topic, from road location and geometric design, pavement design, slope stability and erosion control, through construction to maintenance, then refers the reader to more comprehensive treatment elsewhere. Wherever possible, comparisons are made between the standard specifications and practices existing in the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Topics covered include the following: Road classification, location, and geometric design Pavement concepts, materials, and thickness design Drainage, erosion and sediment control, and watercrossings Slope stability Geosynthetics Road construction, maintenance, and maintenance management Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction, and Maintenance is a valuable reference for engineers, planners, designers and project managers in consulting firms, contracting firms and NGOs. It also is an essential reference in support of university courses on transportation engineering and planning, and on mining, oil and gas, and forestry infrastructure.

Book excerpt: The SHRP Superpave asphalt mixture design system, with its stringent material requirements was specifically developed to produce pavements to meet the expectations of the American public. The Superpave system includes a performance graded asphalt binder system, criteria for aggregate properties, a new mix design procedure using the Superpave gyratory compactor, and refined procedures and requirements for mixture analysis. To date, the Superpave system has primarily been used on medium to high volume roadways, where funding is more readily available. Issues concerning aggregate availability and local economy have limited its use on low volume roads at the local government level. Therefore, the question is: Can the material and testing requirements of the Superpave system be economically applied at the local government level without compromising pavement performance? To answer the above question, the two key requirements of the Superpave system, material requirements and testing requirements, were evaluated.

Book excerpt: Asphalt Pavements provides the know-how behind the design, production and maintenance of asphalt pavements and parking lots. Incorporating the latest technology, this book is the first to focus primarily on the design, production and maintenance of low-volume roads and parking areas. Special attention is given to determining the traffic capacity, required thickness and asphalt mixture type for parking applications. Topics covered include: material information such as binder properties, testing grading and selection; construction information such as mixing plant operation, proportioning, mixture placement and compaction; and design information such as thickness and mixture design methods and guidelines on applying these to highways, city streets and parking Areas. It is an essential practical guide aimed at those engineers and architects who are not directly involved in the asphalt industry, but who nonetheless need to have a good general knowledge of the subject. Asphalt Pavements provides a novice with enough information to completely design, construct and specify an asphalt pavement.
