Book excerpt: The role of superconducting magnets in Magnetic Fusion Energy Research and Development is assessed from a consideration of program plans and schedules, the present status of the programs and the research and development suggestions arising from recent studies and workshops. A principal conclusion is that the large superconducting magnet systems needed for commercial magnetic fusion reactors can be constructed. However such magnets working under severe conditions, with increasingly stringent reliability, safety and cost restrictions can never be built unless experience is first gained in a number of important installations designed to prove physics and technology steps on the way to commercial power demonstration. The immediate problem is to design a technology program in the absence of definite device needs and specifications, giving a priority weighting to the multiplicity of good, high quality development program suggestions when all proposals cannot be supported.

This new and significantly extended second edition covers the state of the art in the development of novel superconductors for advanced magnet applications, as well as the production of practical superconducting wires, tapes, and ultra high current cables used for high-field magnets. It includes two new chapters each devoted to MgB2 and Fe-based superconductors, and discusses the recently developed and world record-setting 45.5-Tesla magnetic field generated by a combination of conventional and high-temperature cuprate superconducting magnets. In addition, it discusses the status and outlook of all current and future nuclear fusion reactors worldwide. The chapter on accelerators includes the ongoing efforts to build high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the high-energy 28 TeV LHC (HE-LHC), the future circular collider (FCC) at CERN, and the just launched electro-ion collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. For a tokamak fusion reactor, large magnetic field coils are required to produce a toroidal magnetic confinement volume. Although superconductors have been used for approximately 20 years, several requirements for their application in fusion reactors are beyond demonstrated technology in existing magnets. The Large Coil Program (LCP) is a research, development, and demonstration effort specifically for the advancement of the technologies involved in the production of large superconducting magnets. This paper presents a review of the status of the structural designs, analysis methods, and verification tests being performed by the participating LCP design teams in the US, Switzerland, Japan, and the Federal Republic of Germany. The significant structural mechanics concerns being investigated with the LCP are presented.
