Book excerpt: Super Freedom is just that a guide for women to super. This guide has a strong, aspirational focus on what superannuation can provide for women, regardless of their marital circumstances, age or even their current superannuation balances. For women it's not so much about the actual amount of super they have, but what they can do with it, eg travel, shop, live. Throwing aside the shackles of jargon and terminology, Trish Power's guide to superannuation for women, provides with women with everything they need to know about how much super they need, getting their super set up, how to increase their super balance, how to move into retirement, insurance and estate planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with familiar designs found all around and inside us (such as the ‘trees’ of river basins, human lungs, blood and city traffic). It then shows how all flow systems are driven by power from natural engines everywhere, and how they are endlessly shaped because of freedom. Finally, Professor Bejan explains how people, like everything else that moves on earth, are driven by power derived from our “engines” that consume fuel and food, and that our movement dissipates the power completely and changes constantly for greater access, economies of scale, efficiency, innovation and life. Written for wide audiences of all ages, including readers interested in science, patterns in nature, similarity and non-uniformity, history and the future, and those just interested in having fun with ideas, the book shows how many “design change” concepts acquire a solid scientific footing and how they exist with the evolution of nature, society, technology and science.

Book excerpt: The proposition that innovation is critical in the cost-effective design and development of successful military aircraft is still subject to some debate. RAND research indicates that innovation is promoted by intense competition among three or more industry competitors. Given the critical policy importance of this issue in the current environment of drastic consolidation of the aerospace defense industry, the authors here examine the history of the major prime contractors in developing jet fighters since World War II. They make use of an extensive RAND database that includes nearly all jet fighters, fighter-attack aircraft, and bombers developed and flown by U.S. industry since 1945, as well as all related prototypes, modifications, upgrades, etc. The report concludes that (1) experience matters, because of the tendency to specialize and thus to develop system-specific expertise; (2) yet the most dramatic innovations and breakthroughs came from secondary or marginal players trying to compete with the industry leaders; and (3) dedicated military R&D conducted or directly funded by the U.S. government has been critical in the development of new higher-performance fighters and bombers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy, seat of the Pope and Vatican City, has a long and difficult relationship with religious freedom. Often identified as a Catholic nation par excellence, Italy owes its unification to a political class that advocated the separation of Church and State. Home of the Concordat, contemporary Italy recognises a peculiar notion of legal secularism (laicità) as the supreme principle of its constitutional order. Through the glasses of law, tracing the history of the right to religious freedom from the Unification to the present day, the nine chapters of the book allow an insight on paradoxes and contradictions of a complex system made of unresolved stratifications where a strong constitutional recognition of religious freedom is accompanied by a weak legislative protection of religious pluralism and, at the same time, a vigorous religious agency in the public space. Religious freedom in Italy offers an interpretation of a model of religious freedom that is not only a paradigm for many European experiences but also a possible interpretative parameter to better understand the dynamics of religious freedom between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

The Analytical Representation comprises more than statements of positive law or mechanical comparison. Each chapter is introduced by thought-forms predominant in the respective legal culture. The objective of the Methodological Representation is to investigate the logic and legitimate pattern by which the US and Swiss judiciary come to the conclusion that an alleged interference is covered under the right to religious freedom. The last dimension, which is the Eclectic Representation, pursues a dual aim. Firstly, the idea is to develop an actual guideline of religious freedom rules, and secondly, to evaluate how much religious freedom is internalized in the US, Swiss, and Syrian legal systems. Book excerpt: A Newbery Honor Book: During the Revolutionary War, a courageous pioneer girl fights for freedom When thirteen-year-old Stephanie Venable moves with her family from North Carolina to a four-hundred-acre homestead in Kentucky, she knows they’re in for a great adventure. The family sells whatever belongings they can’t fit in their covered wagon, and begin the long journey west. But Stephanie has brought something special with her, an apple seed from their tree back home, just as her grandmother did when she moved from France to America. In Kentucky, the Venables must fell trees, build a cabin, and prepare the land for crops. Being a pioneer is a lot of work, but it’s also very exciting: Stephanie and her family must grow, catch, or hunt everything they need to eat and survive. With the Revolutionary War also moving west, the family faces threats from British sympathizers and American rebels. Will freedom take root in America, like Stephanie’s young apple tree, or will the Venable family succumb to the hardships of frontier life?

Book excerpt: In this dramatic Civil War story, a courageous enslaved fugitive teams with a cunning Union general to save a Union fort from the Confederates–and triggers the end of slavery in the United States. This is the first children's nonfiction book about a Black unsung hero who remains relevant today and to the Black Lives Matter movement. On the night Virginia secedes from the Union, three enslaved men approach Fortress Monroe. Knowing that Virginia's secession meant they would be separated from their families and sent farther south to work for the Confederacy, the men decided to plead for sanctuary. And they were in luck. The fort's commander, Benjamin Butler, retained them--and many more that followed--by calling them "contraband of war." Butler depended on the contrabands to provide information about the Confederates. He found the perfect partner in George Scott, one of the contrabands, whose heroism saved the fort from enemy hands. And, it was the plight of the contrabands that convinced President Lincoln that slavery MUST be abolished and inspired him to write his Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery in the rebellious states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See You on Venus! is a book about learning to let go of your investment in self-imposed limitations so that you can dismantle the blocks you have created to your innate freedom, success, choice, happiness and completion. It is also a book about hope, observation and reconnecting with your lost self - the self of perfect success, happiness and harmony. Like a half-remembered song, each one of us carries a distant memory of how that perfection feels, but this memory is clouded by what we have learned on our journey through life. The message is simple: you have the power to bring together the parts of yourself that have become fragmented and to become one daring and truthful realization of the perfect star you truly are. See You on Venus! shows that you can stop undermining yourself and that you can hold the belief of the truth of what you can be. Remember, never lose moments in your own time when a decision to make a new choice or to see the world in a new way can be so freeing. Whatever aspect of your life you want to focus on, however you define 'success' or 'happiness', wherever you want to take that inner perfection, it's really only a matter of realizing the unlimited resource that you already are (and always were) and reconnecting with what you have forgotten about your perfect self. We all start perfectly successful. We all start complete. We acquire failure. Real success is based on who we are within rather than anything we come by externally. The willingness to look at ourselves in a light of perfection, success, inclusion and completion provides a real opportunity to move forward in the true meaning of peace and happiness. "In this book, Geoffrey Canavan explores the intrinsic nature of success and produces a universal road map for real life that can be tailored to corporate or individual needs. A must-read for business and individual decision-making." - Jerry Flynn, MD Sony Pictures "There is a way of thinking that will bring peace and happiness into our life; that will free us to the memory of a perfectly whole, completely loving and forgotten Self. It is an awareness that mystics and philosophers through the ages have tried to explain and teach how to access. Geoffrey Canavan is a modern mystic with the unique ability of explaining why and how our lives function the way they do and- most importantly-in concepts we can relate to and using language we understand, showing us how to make choices that will change our self-perception, and then the world that it has made for us. In a world made from the belief that there is 'something wrong with me, ' See You On Venus, offers a refreshing and needed alternative to the beliefs that have made the ego's perception seem true. In a world given to finding better ways to defend ourselves and maintain the 'distance' between us, it offers a way to find real healing through forgiveness and joining. For anyone willing to be truly happy or to 'risk' finding the truth of who and what they really are, See You On Venus, will be a blessing and a joy!" - Tom Carpenter, Author and founder of The Forgiveness Project "More than ever, individuals, families, organizations, and governments need to create a vision for success that helps to deliver true happiness, abundance and freedom. Geoffrey Canavan shows us the way." - Robert Holden Ph.D author of Shift Happens, Happiness Now, Success Intelligence and Be Happy "As things tighten up, the drive to succeed grows stronger. Widespread exploration of getting to the root and playing the inner game of succeeding in life - achieving results from the inside out - is fast gaining traction. Geoffrey Canavan presents as highly evolved, insightful and succinct a view as you'll get. World-class!" - Stephen Russell, the Barefoot Doctor, author of Supercharged Taoist and 12 other titles

Book excerpt: Why is it that so many people around the world appear willing to give up freedoms in return for either security or prosperity? For the past 60 years it had been assumed that capitalism was intertwined with liberal democracy, that the two not just thrived together but needed each other to survive. But what happens when both are undermined? Governments around the world -- whether they fall into the authoritarian or the democratic camp -- have drawn up a new pact with their peoples. These are its terms: repression is selective, confined to those who openly challenge the status quo, who publicly go out of their way to 'cause trouble'. The number of people who fall into that category is actually very few. The rest of the population can enjoy freedom to travel, to live more or less as they wish, and to make and spend their money. This is the difference between public freedoms and privatefreedoms. We choose different freedoms we are prepared to cede. We all do it. Freedom for Sale will set a new agenda. Mixing narrative from different countries around the world, it breaks new ground in revealing the extent to which the old assumptions and securities have died. It will crucially ask why so many intelligent and ambitious citizens around the world, particularly among the young, seemed prepared to sacrifice freedom of the press and freedom of speech in their quest for wealth. A new world order may well be upon us, and in this gripping and devastating book John Kampfner reveals how it may just be too late to stop it.

But as the Internet and changing journalism have made it harder to distinguish news from titillation, U.S. courts are showing new resolve in protecting individuals from invasive media scrutiny. As Amy Gajda shows, this judicial backlash is now impinging on mainstream journalists.
