Book excerpt: Return to Sunset Island in Sunset Farewell, the dramatic, fourth book in the new series about Emma, Samantha, and Carrie-away from home for the first time in the ultimate summer job! It's so unfair! Diana is back on the Island for a few weeks - I just don't understand what's she got against me. Now she's going beyond just being snotty - she's after Kurt. What's worse is that he thinks she's great and I'm too touchy. I can't win! Trent's back on the Island, too. He knows I don't really care about him - not in that way, anyway - and it look as if he likes my best friend. I should be happy for both of them, right? But I'm not. Help! -Emma

Book excerpt: Teen paperback series, routinely castigated or ignored by Young Adult librarians despite their popularity with young adults, should be considered for inclusion in collections alongside other genres. In Serious about Series, Makowksi provides distinct criteria by which these series can be judged for quality within their genre, and emphasizes them as an inexpensive way to fulfill patron needs and increase circulation by bringing young people, often considered "non-readers," into the library. Makowski's book is an insightful evaluation of over fifty popular series, and includes an introduction that analyzes the teen series paperback genre and its significance for both teen reading practices and library services. Hundreds of titles are annotated in the book, allowing librarians to develop "in-house" bibliographies of favorite teen series titles, making this a truly useful reference source for the young adult librarian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet, short story writer, critic and novelist, Conrad Aiken (1889-1973) has been called the most metaphysical, the most learned, and the most modern of poets. With writing that reflects an intense interest in psychological, philosophical, and scientific issues, Aiken remains a unique influence upon modern writers and critics today. In his lifetime, Aiken received many awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1930 and the National Book Award for Poetry in 1954. He served as the Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress from 1950-1952. Selected Poems contains Aiken's own choice of the best and most representative of his poems, spanning more than forty years of his work. Harold Bloom has contributed a new Foreword to reintroduce Aiken to a new generation of readers. The inclusion of several pivotal poems from previous editions broadens the scope of the work to represent Aiken's legacy.

This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of My Boyhood and Youthreveals the beginnings of the forming of Muir's special relation towards nature. He considered the encounters with nature as quite an adventure and at first, paid special attention to bird life. John Muir understood that to discover truth, he must turn to what he believed were the most accurate sources. In his autobiographical account, The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, he writes that during his childhood, his father made him read the Bible every day. Muir eventually memorized three-quarters of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament. In his autobiography, written near the end of his life, he described his life from childhood years in Scotland and moving to America to student years in Wisconsin. When he was a student in the University of Wisconsin he was a frequent caller at the house of Dr. Ezra S. Carr. The kindness shown him there, and especially the sympathy which Mrs. Carr, as a botanist and a lover of nature, felt in the young manes interests and aims, led to the formation of a lasting friendship. He regarded Mrs. Carr, indeed, as his "spiritual mother," and his letters to her in later years are the outpourings of a sensitive spirit to one who he felt thoroughly understood and sympathized with him. John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization.
