Book excerpt: Sunlight is part of everyday life and we accept it as good-and good it is in a number of ways. The sun is our source of warmth, and of the light by which we see. It is, in fact, the source of the energy with which life continues on earth. It furnishes energy for photosynthesis, and the pro ducts of photosynthesis constitute our food, building materials, and fuel. A steady state of balance and fine interrelationships exists between life on earth and all the forces and stresses in nature. This book will pin point the balance and relationships we share with sunlight. Our primary focus will be on the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, and on the ultraviolet photobiology of life on earth. This is the story of the effects of the sun's ultraviolet radiation, both good and bad, on all of us and all of life. We will explore the nature of the sun's ultraviolet radiation as it reaches the earth's surface today, and as it probably affected the earth in the distant past; and examine the effect of such radiation on all life, unicellular organisms as well as multicellular plants and animals. The effects of the sun's ultraviolet rays are primarily a result of their action upon cells, and secondarily, a result of their interactions between cells. The cell of a multicellular organism-man included-is also part of the tissue of an organ, and the organ is part of the whole organism.

Book excerpt: "Sun Rays at Midnight" chronicles the life of Norbert Friedman -- before, during, and after the Holocaust. The book also provides a unique examination of the hearts and souls of those who endured the darkest days of the twentieth century, through the eyes of one of the periods most astute and insightful observers. Reviews and Comments regarding Sunrays at Midnight Abby Spilka, Director of Communication, Museum of Jewish Heritage: "Norbert Friedman... hearing about his life will change yours. What happened to Norbert was unspeakable, which is precisely why he speaks to others about it. ......His is a story of survival, triumph, and hope." Rabbi, Jack Riemer, D.D., Author, Lecturer and Editor: "The author is very much aware that all the memories and all the works of prose and poetry that have ever been written cannot ever begin to adequately describe the pain of even one victim´s experience. And yet, tell the story he must-for the sake of his children who urged him to put down in writing the story of his life and for the sake of the generation who needs to know what happened and what meaning, if any, it has..." David Marwell, Ph. D., Director, Museum of Jewish Heritage- A Living Memorial to the Holocaust: "Throughout this historical and personal account, the author provides insight towards the many relationships that sustained him, from the most intimate to the most intricate, from familial love to his powerful faith in humankind and God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun, which is our own star at the center of the Solar System, gives rise to all life on Earth and is the driver of photosynthesis in plants and the source of all food and energy for living things. As seen with the naked eye, the Sun appears as a static and quiet yellow disk in the sky. However, it is a stormy and ever-changing star that contributes much more than light and heat. For example, it is the source of the beautiful northern lights and can affect our technology-based society in many ways. Our Explosive Sun: A Visual Feast of our Source of Light and Life is a great introduction to the Sun for general readers as well as scientists who are not solar physicists. The book presents the basic properties of the Sun, describes how it has fascinated humans throughout history, and shows how it influences our current technologies. The book includes a large number of illustrations and video materials for SpringerExtras, along with a PowerPoint presentation that provides a useful resource for teachers and lectures.

It is home to Emmeline, a young art student; Julius, an art expert who loves paintings more than people; and Frank, a Jewish lawyer looking for a way to protect both his family and his principles as the Nazis begin their rise to power. Rachmann, a mercurial art dealer-- and newly discovered paintings by Vincent van Gogh-- will provide a scandal that turns all their lives upside down. -- adapted from jacket

She has since passed and crossed over in December of 2005. My hope is to inspire your thinking and captivate interest in the magic of sunlight and its effects on our spirits and in our daily lives. The characters and illustrations by Russel Wayne bring so many smiles to my life, as these characters have captivated the magic, mystery . . . whimsical fun and re-sounding love for our sun. I cannot imagine life without the colors painted in the sky as the sun rises and sets each and every day. For each and every one of you, there is an on-going discussion about the changes occurring on our planet, and renewed interest in the environmental effects of our technological developments. Continue the education and dialogue, inspiring love and respect for our wonderful planet Earth. For the scientists, teachers, parents, role models, and students, including my son Jon, currently attending the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, and all students enrolled and employed in environmental studies, bless you for your gifts and contributions past and present, particularly in Chemistry and Research, as well as all other environmental studies. Book excerpt: As a young girl in Bangalore, Gayathri was surrounded by the fragrance of jasmine and flickering oil lamps, her family protected by gods and goddesses. But as she grew older, demons came forth from dark corners of her idyllic kingdom—with the scariest creatures lurking within her tortured mind. Shadows in the Sun traces Gayathri’s courageous battle with debilitating depression that consumed her from adolescence through marriage and a move to the United States. Her inspiring memoir provides a first-of-its-kind cross-cultural view of mental illness—how it is regarded in India and in America, and how she drew on both her rich Hindu heritage and Western medicine to find healing.
