Book Synopsis Sun Above the Horizon by : Peter F. Varadi
Download or read book Sun Above the Horizon written by Peter F. Varadi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meteoric rise of the photovoltaic (PV) industry is an incredible story. In 2013, Google’s investments in PV systems totaled about half a billion dollars and Warren Buffet, one of the famous investors, invested $2.5 billion in the world’s largest PV system in California. These gigantic investments by major financial players were made only 40 years after the first two terrestrial PV companies, Solarex and Solar Power Corporation, were formed in the USA. Back in 1973, the two companies employed 20 people and produced only 500 watts of PV power. Now, just 40 years later, over a million people work in the PV industry. The worldwide capacity of operating PV electric generators equals the capacity of about 25 nuclear power plants. The PV industry is growing at an annual rate of 30 percent, equivalent to about five new nuclear power plants per year. Today, solar electricity is a significant supplier of electricity needs, to the extent that PV is forcing the restructuring of 100-year-old electric power utilities. This book describes how this happened and what lies ahead for PV power generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 150 years the United States Nautical Almanac Office has published The Nautical Almanac, first as part of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac, and then on its own, to provide the US Navy with a convenient form of the astronomical data used for celestial navigation. This book is still the standard resource for marine celestial navigation for the U.S. Navy. The book is produced in collaboration with Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office, part of the U.K. Hydrographic Office. That Office maintains the copyright on the material it produces. The Nautical Almanac contains the following data tabulated at hourly intervals to a precision of 0.1 arcminute: the Greenwich hour angle and declination of the Sun, Moon, and navigational planets; the Greenwich hour angle of Aries; positions of the navigational stars; rise and set times of the Sun and Moon for a range of latitudes; and other data. Each edition also contains a sight reduction table; sight reduction formulas; and various correction tables for sight reduction. There is a useful concise sight reduction form at the back of the book. The Nautical Almanac is available several months in advance of its edition date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purchase of the North Pole or is an adventure novel by Jules Verne, published in 1889. This novel continues the story of the Baltimore Gun Club. The group of heroes first appeared in From the Earth to the Moon and later in Around the Moon. It features the same characters but is set twenty years later. In his later books, Verne tempers his love of science and engineering and adds a good dose of irony about their potential for harmful abuse and the fallibility of human endeavors. This book is a great exemplar of this philosophy.
