Reading during summer vacation may not be very exciting for children, but teachers and parents should make it one. Summer reading is necessary for a child's ability to retain information learned the previous year, and also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the upcoming year. Many believe that it is necessary for children to read on a daily basis in order to maintain literacy skills learned in the previous school year. Reading is extremely effective at building up a child's knowledge in a large amount of subject areas, including English, math, science and history. Studies of children who read during the summer months discovered a much greater intellectual progress in vocabulary, spelling and math than that of a child not reading during summer break. Reading is a strong tool for developing comprehension skills and basic knowledge of the world. Cchildren who read during the summer vacation stay ahead of their classmates during the school year. Summer reading is most important for maintaining a child's current grade level abilities and for developing skills above the current grade level. Encouraging our children to read is critical to keeping them on track with their peers and retain knowledge over the summer break. If you are unsure of what your children should be reading, there are a multitude of reading lists available at school, libraries, and online. Help your child by teaching them responsibility by having them complete the Book Reading Review book. The large size makes it easy to write about a book just read.
