Book excerpt: "We examined depth, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) selection for ten hatchery redband rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) tagged with pressure sensitive ultrasonic transmitters during summer stratification in Twin Lakes, Washington, 2007. Hydroacoustic sonar was also utilized to evaluate spatial habitat use of trout populations in general. We also examined stomach contents and determined the relative weight (Wr) of 106 and 248 coastal rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus) during the summer of 2004 and 2005, respectively. Densities of Daphnia pulicaria and chaoborids, major diet constituents of rainbow trout were also determined. Tagged trout selected depths within or near the metalimnion where temperatures where 20° C and DO was 4 mg/L during July and early August when stratification was the greatest. When temperatures were less than 20° C, tagged fish dispersed throughout the epi- and metalimnion. During stratification, 77% of trout identified with hydroacoustic sonar were located within the metalimnion. In September, when temperatures were

Book excerpt: "Construction of dams dramatically alters the hydrology of rivers, influencing a wide variety of water quality characteristics directly impacting fish species. These physical alterations will interact with increasing temperatures, due to climate change, reducing thermal habitat for cold-water fish species. Rainbow Trout are sensitive to changes in their habitat and prefer water temperatures

Book Synopsis Brown Trout by : Javier Lobón-Cerviá
Download or read book Brown Trout written by Javier Lobón-Cerviá and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown Trout: Biology, Ecology and Management A comprehensive guide to the most current research, history, genetics and ecology of the brown trout including challenging environmental problems The brown trout is an iconic species across its natural European distribution and has been introduced throughout the World. Brown Trout offers a comprehensive review of the scientific information and current research on this major fish species. While the brown trout is the most sought species by anglers, its introduction to various waters around the world is causing serious environmental problems. At the same time, introduction of exogenous brown trout lineages threats conservation of native gene pools of populations in many regions. The authors summarize the important aspects of the brown trout’s life history and ecology and focus on the impact caused by the species. The text explores potential management strategies in order to maintain numerous damaged populations within its natural distributional range and to ameliorate its impacts in exotic environments. The authors include information on a wide-range of topics such as recent updates in population genetics, evolutionary history, reproductive traits and early ontogeny, life history plasticity in anadromous brown trout and life history of the adfluvial brown trout and much more. This vital resource: Contains the latest research on the biology and ecology of brown trout Includes information on phylogeography, genetics, population dynamics and stock management Spotlights the brown trout’s introduction to regions around the world and the serious environmental impacts Offers a comprehensive review of conservation and management techniques Written for salmonid scientists and researchers, fishery and environmental managers, and students of population genetics, ecology and population dynamics, Brown Trout explores the most recent findings on the history, ecology and sustainability of this much-researched species.

Download or read book Trout written by Sergio Polakof and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2013 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trout are generally considered to be cool, freshwater fish species that belong phylogenetically to the rather young group of fin-rayed or Teleost fishes in the Family Salmonidae. Trout have significant economic, social and scientific importance. This book examines two 'trout', the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and the brown trout Salmo trutta. This book came from the editor's interest to bring together some of the major areas that have made 'trout' such an important and enduring model species. The chapters have been carefully crafted by their authors to ensure that they cover as much of the topic as possible including references that support the information.
Download or read book Fish Energetics written by Peter Tytler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.
