Book excerpt: Scenic designer Carly Foster just started her last summer theatre job, and at the ripe old age of twenty-nine, she promised herself it would be a working vacation in the mountains of New Mexico - with no romance allowed. She’s finished with the “drama trauma” of theatre romance: her love life has never been beyond Act One because she can’t stay away from tortured artists. Not this time. But luck is so not on her side: she’s stuck in a touristy ghost town with a charming bodyguard who’s flirting with her just to relieve his own boredom: Asher Day, the producer’s brother recently returned from New York City with an armload of empty canvasses and a vanload of attitude. A sexy painter who won’t talk about his past? So typical. But Carly is determined not to experience a repeat of her past relationships. If only Asher could live up to his wounded artist persona, she could kick him to the curb and stick by her goal to stay away from the type of guy who stomps on her spirit. But the magnetic pull she feels from Asher is irresistible: he has inner strength and compassion, not to mention a heart-melting wink and kisses that leave her sleepless. If Carly can’t keep the drama in the theatre and out of her personal life, not only will she have bags under her eyes, but her heart will never survive the summer. Sensuality Level: Sensual

Book excerpt: “Home has always been elsewhere, packed in a bag; and that is pretty much the story of my life.” Like a gale at her back, history propelled Julia Israel Schueler early in life on a westward course. She was born in Moscow in 1923 and at the age of three months was exiled with her parents and other Mensheviks to Berlin. Twice more “The Group” was displaced—to Paris in 1933 as Adolf Hitler intensified the persecution of political opponents, and to the United States, via Spain and Lisbon, when he invaded France in 1940. Elsewhere is Schueler’s life memoir, an adventure, coming-of-age, and coming-to-America story all in one. Against the gripping backdrop of major twentieth-century events, she tells in lyrical prose her remarkable personal tale of immigration and acculturation, and the ongoing search for an elusive home “elsewhere.” Schueler revisits memories of school days in Germany; streets blood-stained from an early version of Kristallnacht—and the admonishment “You saw nothing”; nostalgia for socialist songs of youth; reading banned books by Balzac and Zola; a wardrobe of cast-off, made-over clothes; the shock of seeing Paris in blackout; scenes of civil war–ravaged Spain; tears of guilt in Times Square on New Year’s Eve 1940; and much more. She introduces a parade of intriguing individuals, including her imaginative, romantic schoolmate Vivi, the niece of Leon Trotsky; Mr. Wittenberg, a close family acquaintance who spoke Esperanto; Dina, the daring young friend who ran away to become a model for the sculptor Aristide Maillol; and refugees from Stalinist gulags and German concentration camps. With touching and comic nuance, she conveys the ties that bind language to survival, identity, experience, and social acceptance and condemnation. She recalls the weeping and fist-shaking amid mysterious Russian in her family’s kitchen, her heartbroken whispers in forbidden German to her teddy bear, and her resolve during the voyage to America to act as French ambassador to the New World. She gives a delectable recounting of her first day of school in Paris, the nasal vowels and swallowed consonants of the strange language flowing over her in a bath of bewilderment. As associations prompt her, Schueler breaks off the thread of her narrative to ponder later events—for example, visiting her married daughter in Morocco; trips to Russia and China; and breast cancer’s lessons in both the curtailment and deepening of vitality. Thus, in aptly wandering style, she comes full circle in her telling, often closing the gaps in early recollections with insights gained years afterward. Elsewhere will draw readers into a delightful intimacy with the author as they follow her suspenseful passage from impressionable childhood through vibrant youth to graceful maturity, to finding home at last in New Orleans.

Book excerpt: Arthur Rimbaud burst onto the literary scene in 1871 with a startling new voice, transforming himself from an anonymous country boy into the sensation of Paris. His explosive life included a passionate affair with the older (and married) poet Paul Verlaine, and a prosperous career as a trader and arms dealer in Ethiopia. A cancerous leg forced him to return to France, where he died at the age of thirty-seven. Bruce Duffy takes these astonishing facts and brings them to vivid life in a story rich with humor, exquisite writing, and alarming parallels to our own contemporary moment. Disaster Was My God vividly conveys, as few works ever have, the inner turmoil of this calculating genius, and helps us understand why Rimbaud’s work and life continue to influence protean rock legends, from Bob Dylan to Patti Smith.

Book excerpt: The Grand Army of the Republic, the largest of all Union Army veterans' organizations, was the most powerful single-issue political lobby of the late nineteenth century, securing massive pensions for veterans and helping to elect five postwar presidents from its own membership. To its members, it was also a secret fraternal order, a source of local charity, a provider of entertainment in small municipalities, and a patriotic organization. Using GAR convention proceedings, newspapers, songs, rule books, and local post records, Stuart McConnell examines this influential veterans' association during the years of its greatest strength. Beginning with a close look at the men who joined the GAR in three localities -- Philadelphia; Brockton, Massachusetts; and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin - McConnell goes on to examine the Union veterans' attitudes towards their former Confederate enemies and toward a whole range of noncombatants whom the verterans called "civilians": stay-at-home townsfolk, Mugwump penion reformers, freedmen, women, and their own sons and daughters. In the GAR, McConnell sees a group of veterans trying to cope with questions concerning the extent of society's obligation to the poor and injured, the place of war memories in peacetime, and the meaning of the "nation" and the individual's relation to it. McConnell aruges that, by the 1890s, the GAR was clinging to a preservationist version of American nationalism that many white, middle-class Northerners found congenial in the face of the social upheavals of that decade. In effect, he concludes, the nineteenth-century career of the GAR is a study in the microcosm of a nation trying to hold fast to an older image of itself in the face of massive social change.

Book excerpt: 1978. On holiday with their children in Oban, Nick and Rosemary Storey stumble across a stone hut filled with barrels of what seems to be illicit whisky. While on their way to walking nearby hills, they smell the unmistakeable smell of barley being fermented in a mash tun before distillation. But having overheard a conversation about the illegal whisky operation, Nick is unable to contact the local police or Excise officer. A chance remark and the arrival of the Customs cutter "Venturous" leads to a cat and mouse chase around Mull and the neighbouring islands. But there may be a price to pay for catching the whisky smugglers. "Copper Kettle" is the thirteenth book in a series of detective stores set in HM Customs & Excise, by Richard Hernaman Allen, a former Commissioner.
