Book excerpt: Northwest Territories Tourism, along with funding partners Aboriginal Business Canada, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and the Government of the Northwest Territories, issued a Request for Proposal for a Tourism Product Inventory and Gap Analysis in July 2004. The RFP spelled out that a comprehensive inventory and analysis is required to provide strategic direction for tourism business development. A proposal was submitted on August 4, 2004 by a project team comprised of faculty and associate researchers with The University College of the Cariboo's Centre for Tourism Research. The purpose of the tourism product inventory and gap analysis is to collect and analyze data on existing tourism products in the Northwest Territories. The gap analysis is based upon the difference between the existing resources, infrastructure, natural features, community objectives, local expertise and its potential. The report also includes recommended development strategies.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: There are growing pressures on undeveloped (wild) places in the Circumpolar North. Among them are pressures for economic development, oil and gas exploration and extraction, development of geothermal energy resources, development of heavy industry close to energy sources, and lack of appreciation for "other" orientations toward wilderness resources by interested parties from broad geographical origins. An international seminar in Anchorage, Alaska, in May of 2001, was the first step in providing basic input to an analysis of the primary set of values associated with Circumpolar North wilderness and the constraints and contributors (factors of influence) that either limit or facilitate receipt of those values to various segments of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academically complex and challenging to apply, development and planning are increasingly relevant to the growing tourism industry. This collection contains critical studies on tourism development and planning, and calls for proactive, holistic and responsible thinking. It addresses conceptual and contemporary issues in development and planning research including political trust, innovation networks, sustainability, moral encounters, enclavisation and evolutionary economics. It argues that recognition of the contextual and historical dimensions around tourism development and planning is essential to help both researchers and practitioners better understand destination and place-based decision-making. In addition, it will lead to improvements in stakeholder relations, and explains how tourism best works with localities and localities with tourism. This book was originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Dressler and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of the social, economic and environmental impacts of nature-based tourism within the communities of Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik, Beaufort-Delta Region, NWT. The specific goals of the study were: (1) to voice institutional, Inuvialuit, visitor and tour operator perspectives regarding present and desired conditions related to nature-based tourism; (2) to identify and assess any discrepancies between present and desired conditions; and (3) to assess existing tourism guidelines and suggest new guidelines and sustainable nature-based tourism planning objectives. The study was based on a structured questionnaire with nature-based tourists (N = 171), and formal interviews with Inuvialuit elders (N = 30), institutional representatives (N = 23) and local tour operators (N = 22), respectively. Participant observation was used at whaling camps. The field research component dealt with how each stakeholder's function interfaces with local cultural and economic goals and environmental integrity. The results revealed that community stakeholders, and in particular, Inuvialuit elders and tour operators, thought that the economic potential of nature-based tourism was high, and consequently support for it was also high. Inuvialuit elders and institutional representatives argued that nature-based tourism has served as a valuable vehicle to help break down cultural barriers, revive culture, and support subsistence activities. Despite such optimism, discrepancies do exist between the desired and existing conditions of the nature based tourism industry. Issues include: (1) the potential misinterpretation, commoditization and interference of beluga hunting and other cultural activities by tourists; (2) the disturbance of terrestrial animals and waterfowl and trampling of tundra vegetation by tourists and tour operators; and (3) the inequitable distribution of economic benefits of nature-based tourism.
