Book excerpt: Randy Grimes quickly learned one important truth as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' top draft pick: play through pain, or get cut. This is just part of being a pro athlete, he told himself. Growing up in Tyler, Texas, Grimes's life was very much on center. A childhood spent in church on Sundays and on the gridiron all week turned into a football scholarship to Baylor, marriage to his college sweetheart, and a coveted NFL roster spot. When the Bucs' starting center began piling up brutal hits, he determined to do anything to stay in the game. If the pills prescribed by the team doctors could help, Grimes would take them. All in a day's work, he told himself. Even before Grimes left the NFL, his life began slipping off center. Eventually, he lost almost everything he owned, the respect of his children, and very nearly his life, before tumbling out of the car and crawling on hands and knees into a treatment center-literally-into a life-changing miracle. Off Center is Randy Grimes's riveting story of having it all, playing the sport he loved, losing almost everything, and ultimately finding redemption and hope. Witness the addiction trap that binds millions and claims thousands of lives each year-and the steps Grimes took to reclaim his life and guide others. Today Grimes and his wife, Lydia, stage drug and alcohol interventions for professional athletes, celebrities, business leaders, and everyday Americans to find recovery from addiction. Recovery has become his playbook. His treatment center colleagues are his team. And those with addiction are his community. Above all, Grimes wants people to know: Even when the world seems to be yours, there is room to fall. And even when that world seems to slip away, there is hope.

Book excerpt: The technical note documents a study to develop analytical techniques for use in optimizing the locations and characteristics of inland centers to facilitate the flow of containerizable marine cargo. Such centers would perform the consolidation of small lots of break-bulk general cargo into container loads for export; for the reverse flow, they would carry out the handling and unloading of import containers for cargo distribution. Performance of these functions inland, rather than exclusively at or near the ports involved, should result in savings to the shipping community from transporting cargo over land in full containers rather than as more costly less-than-carload lots. A mathematical model and associated solution technique have been developed, implemented in a digital computer program to a point compatible with the kinds of information available, and exercised using the body of data and background material accumulated during the fact-finding phases of the study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A indispensable guide to understanding and designing modern experiments The tools and techniques of Design of Experiments (DOE) allow researchers to successfully collect, analyze, and interpret data across a wide array of disciplines. Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments provides a modern and balanced treatment of DOE methodology with thorough coverage of the underlying theory and standard designs of experiments, guiding the reader through applications to research in various fields such as engineering, medicine, business, and the social sciences. The book supplies a foundation for the subject, beginning with basic concepts of DOE and a review of elementary normal theory statistical methods. Subsequent chapters present a uniform, model-based approach to DOE. Each design is presented in a comprehensive format and is accompanied by a motivating example, discussion of the applicability of the design, and a model for its analysis using statistical methods such as graphical plots, analysis of variance (ANOVA), confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. Numerous theoretical and applied exercises are provided in each chapter, and answers to selected exercises are included at the end of the book. An appendix features three case studies that illustrate the challenges often encountered in real-world experiments, such as randomization, unbalanced data, and outliers. Minitab® software is used to perform analyses throughout the book, and an accompanying FTP site houses additional exercises and data sets. With its breadth of real-world examples and accessible treatment of both theory and applications, Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments is a valuable book for experimental design courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also an indispensable reference for practicing statisticians, engineers, and scientists who would like to further their knowledge of DOE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grants for research centers located in universities, medical centers, and other nonprofit research institutions account for about 9 percent of the National Institutes of Health budget. Centers are popular because they can bring visibility, focus, and increased resources to bear on specific diseases. However, congressional debate in 2001 over proposed legislation directing NIH to set up centers for muscular dystrophy research highlighted several areas of uncertainty about how to decide when centers are an appropriate research mechanism in specific cases. The debate also highlighted a growing trend among patient advocacy groups to regard centers as a key element of every disease research program, regardless of how much is known about the disease in question, the availability of experienced researchers, and other factors. This book examines the criteria and procedures used in deciding whether to establish new specialized research centers. It discusses the future role of centers in light of the growing trend of large-scale research in biomedicine, and it offers recommendations for improving the classification and tracking of center programs, clarifying and improving the decision process and criteria for initiating center programs, resolving the occasional disagreements over the appropriateness of centers, and evaluating the performance of center programs more regularly and systematically.
