Book excerpt: The 21st century may be the age of globalism, with such nongovernmental organizations as the International Red Cross, Greenpeace, and Amnesty International serving the world without regard to nationalities. Is the next step a federal world government? The pros and cons of a democratic federal world government are carefully reasoned here, as are the basic concepts of such a federation, and the relationship of law and government. The author's analysis brings one to the conclusion that a global federation is inevitable despite the many obstacles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stoics, Dante, the philosophers of the Enlightenment, H.G. Wells, world federalists, would-be reformers of the United Nations, and many others have all thought, albeit in very different ways, in cosmopolitan or world terms. This book traces the history of western political thinking about world citizenship and the world state. It analyses the manifold forms in which the basic concept of a world polity has been expounded and shows that, despite objections to the very notion and its failure to be implemented, it still remains a potent ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Girls and Global Responsibility brings together insights from Cold War culture studies, girls’ studies, and the history of gender and militarization to shed new light on how age and gender work together to form categories of citizenship. Jennifer Helgren argues that a new internationalist girl citizenship took root in the country in the years following World War II in youth organizations such as Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, YWCA Y-Teens, schools, and even magazines like Seventeen. She shows the particular ways that girls’ identities and roles were configured, and reveals the links between internationalist youth culture, mainstream U.S. educational goals, and the U.S. government in creating and marketing that internationalist girl, thus shaping the girls’ sense of responsibilities as citizens.

Book excerpt: A majestic narrative reckoning with the forces that have shaped the nature and destiny of the world’s governing institutions The story of global cooperation is a tale of dreamers goading us to find common cause in remedying humanity’s worst problems. But international institutions are also tools for the powers that be to advance their own interests. Mark Mazower’s Governing the World tells the epic, two-hundred-year story of that inevitable tension—the unstable and often surprising alchemy between ideas and power. From the rubble of the Napoleonic empire in the nineteenth century through the birth of the League of Nations and the United Nations in the twentieth century to the dominance of global finance at the turn of the millennium, Mazower masterfully explores the current era of international life as Western dominance wanes and a new global balance of powers emerges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an overview of the International Air Force (IAF) concept, which emerged in the early 20th century out of a long progression of schemes for creating multi-national armed forces to enforce the peace, most often referred to as an international police force (IPF). After broadly tracing the IAF's complex lineage, Beaumont surveys the proliferation of IPF and IAF proposals throughout the 20th century, including schemes offered by Kipling, H.G. Wells, and Theodore Roosevelt. Later ideas included the Allies' Independent Air Force of 1917-18, the evolution of the League to Enforce Peace into the League of Nations, imperial air policing between the World Wars, and a host of proposals, official and informal, such as visions of a United Nations IAF and the ad hoc coalition air forces assembled by the major western powers in the Gulf War and the Balkans in the 1990s. The IAF concept gained far greater popularity, even among contemporary historians, than is generally appreciated. Beaumont interweaves the review of the IAF and IPF designs with diplomacy and war, especially the rise of air power, and the confounding of its advocates' visions of a cheap, quick road to victory. Based on Beaumont's survey of secondary and primary sources during more than a decade of research, this book considers the IAF image from such diverse perspectives as pacifism, popular culture, and collective security.

Book excerpt: This yearbook marks the thirteenth year of the Comparative Survey of Freedom and is the seventh edition in the Freedom House series of annual publications. In addition to the ratings and tables of the Comparative Survey, this volume contains an extensive discussion of the criteria for and definitions of freedom. For the first time ever, the yearbook includes the checklist of political rights and civil liberties that forms the basis of the Survey's ratings system. Summary discussions of the status of freedom in each country and related territories are included. This edition also examines the continuing controversy over the role of and regulations appropriate to the news media in the ongoing struggle for greater political, social, and economic freedom. It reports the outcome of a Freedom House-sponsored conference on strengthening American support for liberalization in Eastern Europe. Finally, the volume includes an assessment of the American campaign for democracy in the world and considers the opportunities and strategies appropriate to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after the experience of WWII and despite the existence of various institutions such as United Nations to avoid conflict between nations, we have not succeeded in making a world free from war. The Cold War, the Vietnam War, the intervention of the superpowers in local conflicts and the spread of terrorism have made this all too clear. This volume brings together contributions by leading international scholars of various countries and reconstructs how economists have dealt with issues that have been puzzling them for nearly three centuries: Can a war be 'rational'? Does international commerce complement or substitute war? Who are the real winners and losers of wars? How are military expenses to be funded? The book offers a refreshing approach to the subject and how we think about the relations between economics and war.

Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and state of the art overview of hemophilia management by reviewing all most recent advances and cutting edge information in this fast evolving field. As hemophilia patients are often affected by joint problems it also provides clear guidance on the surgical treatment of musculo-skeletal manifestations. The first part is devoted to the disease’s pathophysiology (differentiating hemophilia A and B), genetics, pharmacotherapy – including replacement and non-replacement therapy – and gene therapy, as well as quality of life issues – also related to hemophilia carriers. The second part is then focused on joint problems, ranging from joint health assessment and pain control to surgical treatment of acute hemarthrosis and hemophilic arthropathy, i.e. radiosynovectomy, total joint arthroplasty and arthroscopic joint debridement. Written by experts drawn from leading institutions involved in treatment of hemophilia and related joint problems, this book offers a valuable resource to hematologists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians, radiologists, and pharmacy researchers.
