Book excerpt: "It is the statutory responsibility of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to evaluate progress toward recovery of Puget Sound Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), Hood Canal summer chum salmon (O. keta), and Puget Sound steelhead (O. mykiss), which were listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1999 and 2007 (NMFS 1999a, 1999b, 2007a). As part of this responsibility, NMFS must assess the status of each listed population every five years, as well as the status and trends of key listing factors. One of the key listing factors for these three Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESUs) is the degraded quantity, quality, and distribution of habitat supporting these species. However, there are no consistent freshwater and nearshore habitat data across Puget Sound with which to assess habitat status or trends. Moreover, there is currently no program established to collect those data for assessing status and trends of salmon habitats in Puget Sound. Our goal in this project was to develop a habitat monitoring program for the four distinct salmon and steelhead spawning and rearing environments of Puget Sound: large rivers, floodplains, deltas, and the nearshore. This program will provide data to assess habitat changes across each ESU and help determine whether habitat conditions are improving, static, or declining at future status reviews for each of the listed species. We have five objectives for the first year of this monitoring effort: 1) to develop a hierarchical sampling design to monitor habitat status and trends, 2) to identify habitat metrics that are cost-effective and related to Viable Salmonid Population (VSP) parameters (abundance, population growth rate, population structure, and diversity), 3) to develop protocols to measure these metrics, 4) to test satellite, aerial photography, and field observation methods for repeatability and reliability, and 5) to evaluate habitat status to assess the ability of each metric to detect habitat differences among the chosen land-cover strata"--Executive Summary. Book excerpt: "This technical memorandum was developed by the Puget Sound Recovery Implementation Technical Team (PS RITT) to provide a formal monitoring and adaptive management framework (hereinafter called the framework) for assessing Puget Sound Chinook salmon recovery. Monitoring and adaptive management have occurred at the watershed and regional scales as implementation of the Recovery Plan has proceeded. However, the lack of a formal framework has meant that there is no standardized vocabulary or shared common approach to articulate the key assumptions of the chapters in Volume II, test assumptions across chapters, or connect the local, watershed-scale information in Volume II with the regional-scale information in Volume I. This gap limits the collective ability of resource managers to assess the effectiveness of salmon recovery efforts across the region, identify uncertainties, and update priorities and actions in the Recovery Plan. Furthermore, the framework is intended to help salmon recovery managers formalize their local-scale monitoring and adaptive management plans using a common approach"--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: Fishes of the Salish Sea is the definitive guide to the identification and history of the marine and anadromous fishes of Puget Sound and the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca. This comprehensive three-volume set, featuring striking illustrations of the Salish Sea's 260 fish species by noted illustrator Joseph Tomelleri, details the ecology and life history of each species and recounts the region's rich heritage of marine research and exploration. Beginning with jawless hagfishes and lampreys and ending with the distinctive Ocean Sunfish, leading scientists Theodore Wells Pietsch and James Orr present the taxa in phylogenetic order, based on classifications that reflect the most current scientific knowledge. Illustrated taxonomic keys facilitate fast and accurate species identification. These in-depth, thoroughly documented, and yet accessible volumes will prove invaluable to marine biologists and ecologists, natural resource managers, anglers, divers, students, and all who want to learn about, marvel over, and preserve the vibrant diversity of Salish Sea marine life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.
