Book excerpt: Long-term dynamic tests have provided additional information on the corrosion rate of aluminum X-8001. In five tests, the rate varied from near zero to 15 mg/dm2day. The most important factors affecting corrosion were water velocity, pH (including a water additive), temperature, and surface-area-to-water volume ratio. The effect of several of these was known previously, but some had not been thoroughly investigated. In general, for this series of tests, there was a benefit by decreasing the pH from 7 to 5. This benefit was magnified greatly if phosphoric acid was used to decrease the pH. However, when the pH was extended to 4.5 with phosphoric acid, the corrosion, although extremely low, was no longer a uniform type of attack. The effect of increasing temperature was to increase the corrosion rate, as had been noted previously. The effect of the ratio of corroding aluminum surface area to volume of circulating water was directly measured for the first time. The test at 260 deg C indicated that for the dynamic section of the loop the metal loss decreases as this ratio increases. This helps to explain the reason for higher corrosion results in tests such as the in-reactor test loop in MTR, wbere this ratio is quite Iow. Other variables which have a lesser or negligible effect were also investigated. Surface boiling caused by higher corrosion, although the question of how much this is caused by increased surface temperature is not known. Tests of inreactor fuel plates also gave similar results, but also have the same question. Coupling effects are negligible unless the water quality becomes very poor. (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were performed on aluminum alloys to evaluate their behavior in high-temperature, high-pressure. watercooled and -moderated nuclear reactor enviromnents. Test equipment, sample preparation. and test procedures are discussed. Aluminum nickel alloys were found resistant to disintegration for periods up to 60 days in dynamic water at 600 ction prod- F. The corrosion rates of the aluminum alloys M-388 and X-2219 at 600 ction prod- F were found to be too high to merit consideration for cladding materials. The influence of pH. gas content, and velocity of the water on the corrosion of the above alloys was evaluated. Hydrogen addition at startup appeared to increase the degree of corrosion attack on the M-388 alloy. Irradiation tests on aluminum-nickel alloys revealed that the corrosion rate increased with distance from core. In-reactor samples of M-388 exhibited less corrosion attack than out-of-reactor samples. Boiling water corrosion tests were performed on M-388 for 1612 hr at 422 ction prod- F with an average heat flux of 25,000 Btu per hrft2. The over- all corrosion rate was 2.9 mil per yr. It is concluded that the corrosion rate of M-388 is acceptable for the specified test conditions: (1) absence of radiation: (2) demineralized water at 422 ction prod- F; and (3) heat transfer rates not exceeding 40,000 Btu per ft2. No accelerated corrosion attack due to boiling heat transfer and no significant buildup of corrosion products on heat transfer surfaces were noted. Accelerated corrosion of M-388 was noted when coupled with Type 304 stainless steel and exposed to tap water at room temperature, or air-saturated, demineralized water at 680 ction prod- F.A technique for stripping corrosion films from aluminum and aluminum-nickel alloys is given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey and experimental results from investigations of aluminum corrosion under both static and dynamic test conditions are presented. Static corrosion tests were made on 8001, 8001 + 2.5% Mg and X2219 clad with M400 aluminum alloys. Dynamic corrosion tests were made only on the 8001 alloy. These tests were performed in three identical dynamic corrosion test loops. Initial tests in each loop were made to investigate corrosion behavior in high purity water at high temperatures and high flow velocities. Reproducibility tests were also carried out. An evaluation was made of aluminum-surface-area-to- watervolume-ratio effects on corrosion resistance. Prefilmed sample tests in which test specimens were prefilmed at two different temperatures in a static autoclave prior to the dynamic tests were also made. Results indicated that the corrosion rates of the 8001 aluminum alloy were too high for an economical design of the reactor core. A considerable amount of uncertainty was found to exist in the corrosion literature, as well as in the experimental data, regarding effects of various test parameters on corrosion behavior of this alloy. Time limitations for application to the Pathfinder reactor prohibited further investigation of this material. Consequently, a recommendation of the 8001 aluminum alloy as the boiling water reactor core cladding material, operating at Pathfinder conditions, could not be made.

Book excerpt: High temperature corrosion is a phenomenon that occurs in components that operate at very high temperatures, such as gas turbines, jet engines and industrial plants. Engineers are constantly striving to understand and prevent this type of corrosion. This book examines the latest developments in the understanding of high temperature corrosion processes and protective oxide scales and coatings. Part one looks at high temperature corrosion. Chapters cover diffusion and solid state reactions, external and internal oxidation of alloys, metal dusting corrosion, tribological degradation, hot corrosion, and oxide scales on hot-rolled steel strips. Modern techniques for analysing high temperature oxidation and corrosion are also discussed. Part two discusses methods of protection using ceramics, composites, protective oxide scales and coatings. Chapters focus on layered ternary ceramics, alumina scales, Ti-Al intermetallic compounds, metal matrix composites, chemical vapour deposited silicon carbide, nanocrystalline coatings and thermal barrier coatings. Part three provides case studies illustrating some of the challenges of high temperature corrosion to industry and how they can be overcome. Case studies include the petrochemical industry, modern incinerators and oxidation processing of electronic materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry and alloy composition. The focus is on designing (or selecting) alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases. . Emphasises quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities and alloy compositions. . Uses phase diagrams and diffusion paths to analyse and interpret scale structures and internal precipitation distributions . Provides a detailed examination of corrosion in industrial gases (water vapour effects, carburisation and metal dusting, sulphidation) . Text is well supported by numerous micrographs, phase diagrams and tabulations of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic data . Combines physical chemistry and materials science methodologies.
