Com isso, a pesquisa teve como principais objetivos identificar, compreender e analisar sentidos atribuídos à escola e às contribuições que essa traz para a constituição dos projetos pessoais dos que passam pela Educação Básica. A pesquisa se deu a partir de narrativas biográficas de estudantes do curso de Licenciatura em Matemática, em que sete colaboradores contaram suas histórias de vida seguindo três eixos estruturantes: antes, durante e depois da escola. No primeiro eixo, procurou-se entender como a escola era vista antes da entrada nessa, bem como a valorização da Educação, sobretudo escolar, para a família. A fase durante a escola foi assinalada por episódios de alegria, realização, desprazer e frustração. O terceiro eixo, por sua vez, aborda como a escola teve papel fundamental para a escolha, ingresso e permanência no curso de graduação, bem como a inserção no mercado de trabalho. Os principais sentidos atribuídos a escola abordados aqui são aprendizagem, relações pessoais e diversão.

Com esta finalidade, o aporte teórico foi a Psicologia Institucional de base foucaultiana, a qual permitiu entender a instituição escolar como o que se estabelece nas relações concretas entre seus principais atores, o professor e o aluno. Esta concepção de escola como instituicão permitiu entender também o conceito de sujeito para além do discurso da filosofia moderna, para além da idéia de sujeito endógeno, é a noção de sujeito como sendo constituído pelas práticas institucionais e sendo delas constituinte. Portanto, constituiu-se a idéia de que para compreender uma rede institucional precisa-se escutar as vozes dos atores institucionais, precisa-se entrever o sujeito institucional. Foram realizadas entrevistas com professores e alunos de uma determinada escola. Concluiu-se que o processo de reprodução-transformação acontece num mesmo ato na escola da modernidade, porque a reprodução, a imposição da disciplina sempre traz seu oposto. Desta forma, as falas dos atores escolares que apresentam a indisciplina são indicativas da transformação na escola, da ação do sujeito.
