These vital questions are at the heart of this important book. Mia Bloom examines the use, strategies, successes, and failures of suicide bombing in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and assesses the effectiveness of government responses. She argues that in many instances the efforts of Israel, Russia, and the United States in Iraq have failed to deter terrorism and suicide bombings. Bloom also considers how terrorist groups learn from one another, how they respond to counterterror tactics, the financing of terrorism, and the role of suicide attacks against the backdrop of larger ethnic and political conflicts. Dying to Kill begins with a review of the long history of terrorism, from ancient times to modernity, from the Japanese Kamikazes during World War II, to the Palestinian, Tamil, Iraqi, and Chechen terrorists of today. Bloom explores how suicide terror is used to achieve the goals of terrorist groups: to instill public fear, attract international news coverage, gain support for their cause, and create solidarity or competition between disparate terrorist organizations. She contends that it is often social and political motivations rather than inherently religious ones that inspire suicide bombers. In her chapter focusing on the increasing number of women suicide bombers and terrorists, Bloom examines Sri Lanka, where 33 percent of bombers have been women; Turkey, where the PKK used women feigning pregnancy as bombers; and the role of the Black Widows in the Chechen struggle against Moscow. For the last 13 years, I've pondered and researched the causes that might have led to my sister's depression and eventual suicide. By reading the diaries she let behind, I was able to gain a better glimpse into her inner world and internal struggles that led to her having low self-esteem, eating disorders and frequent rumination. I do not point the fingers at any one person or one single problem, and I definitely do not claim to have solved the great puzzle to understanding all sub-categories of depression. What this book will clarify is that depression is a multifaceted global issue that has possible causes at both individual and community levels, and we must better define, identify and understand the underlying causes depression so that we can create a much more targeted, specific and integrated system of treatment for those suffering from it. The first section of the book goes into the kinds of negative mental habits and repetitive stories that people at risk for major depression commonly engage in. The second section covers some of the major influences on our mental narrative and thought patterns that cause the mental habits mentioned from the first section. The third and final section brainstorms different ideas on how we can improve the status quo and covers the latest findings from academia and research to treat and prevent depression. "There’s so much we can do [in order to advance mental health treatments for patients with depression]. We have figured some important things out, but we are definitely in need of more answers. We have yet to understand what truly works for depression as well as how to communicate that to others. A new wave of violence soon erupted, engulfing places from Rwanda and Somalia to Chechnya and Bosnia. These new "clashes of civilizations," fundamentalist jihads, and ethnic massacres appeared to be more savage and less rational than the long twilight struggle with the USSR, during which Washington's adversary was clearly identified and relatively predictable. In an effort to understand these post-Cold War conflicts and to advise the government on how to deal with them, a new school of foreign policy thought has developed. Dubbed "chaos theory," it argues that the much heralded processes of globalization are actually breeding a reaction of irrational violence. Thus, the spread of Western cultural icons through new electronic media often shocks and offends moral sensibilities in traditional societies. The explosive growth of international commerce has triggered a wave of migration and urbanization that throws together people from different cultures and fertilizes xenophobia. Chaos theory has already won converts in the U.S. military, the intelligence community, and the foreign service.
