As a result, sugar-beets, in the past century, have won an important place among the profitable crops of the temperate zone. There are, however, many things to indicate the industry's stability. Considering the whole country, climatic conditions have not been normal. Unfavorable weather occurred during the planting season in nearly all the different beet-growing areas. In some places there were excessive rains; in others the weather was too cold or too dry. In most of the States, Colorado particularly excepted, fairly favor able weather conditions existed during the growing season. There would, however, have been a larger planted and harvested area throughout the United States had it not been for the unfavorable weather conditions of the planting period. In' many places the yield and quality of beets were good. The total output of beets and sugar was reduced on account of the smaller area planted. It is in no way intended that the book will replace any of the text-books or handbooks that treat of the manufacture of beet-sugar; in fact it is assumed that the reader already has a general knowledge of sugar-chemistry and sugar-technique. In such books, however, that which is of utmost importance to the practical sugar man, namely, the theoretical principles upon which the methods of working depend and the many rules, tricks, and numerous other little things learned by experience which are so necessary for the proper conduct of a sugar-factory, is either incompletely treated or vaguely distributed throughout the other subject-matter, lost practical sugar men, therefore, will find but little that is new in these pages, but it cannot be distasteful to them to have the matter briefly summarized so that they can look it over during the long pause between two campaigns. A book concerning the sugar-industry can be written only by one who has himself had practical experience. S. Department of Agriculture at Albany, Calif. Was begun in July 1948. The initial program was based on the sugar beet industry's need for (a) fundamental information on which to develop new and improved processing methods, (b) methods to predict processing characteristics of various types of beets, and (c) increased efficiency and lower cost in beet sugar manufacture. Funds were made available through the Research and Marketing Act of 1946 for research at Albany as well as for contract research at institutions throughout the country, where facilities or scientists were best qualified for a particular project. Since 1958 selected research projects in foreign countries have been subsidized with funds made available from the sale of surplus crops under Public Law 480. Some sugar beet utilization research has been thus supported. From the beginning, the beet sugar industry was keenly interested in the re search program. An advisory committee of industry representatives (chemists and research directors) was formed to advise the Laboratory scientists on problems important to the industry. The committee, known as the Sugar Beet Process Advi sory Committee, was appointed by the Beet Sugar Development Foundation, Fort Collins, Colo. Its first meeting was held in 1949. Semiannual or annual meetings were held throughout the years at the Western Regional Research Laboratory or at the biannual meetings of the Merican Society of Sugar Beet Technologists.
