Book Synopsis Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought by : Paul Magee
Download or read book Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought written by Paul Magee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-04-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrogating the much-cherished concept of “poetic thinking,” this book focuses on what interview and draft materials reveal of how poets actually do think, when in the act of writing. The interviews confirm what findings from cognitive science and linguistics make clear: we rarely know exactly what words we are going to say, until we have said them. Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought draws out the implications of a radically curtailed view of consciousness on how we understand the drafting and revision of lines of poetry, with implications for our theorisation of the composition of prose. Henrich von Kleist’s assertion that “it is not we, but a certain condition of ours which knows” emerges as central to this reassessment of the nature of the written word. Employing an extensive archive of interview materials with major Anglophone poets, discussing how they think in the moments of composition, this book also provides a lucid account of the links between poetic composition and live performative thinking in the contexts of Romantic compositional practice and the early (pre)textual history of ancient Greek epic. A transdisciplinary study at the crossroads of philosophy, cognitive psychology, literary studies, and linguistics, this book reconceptualizes the wellsprings of poetic thought and advances our understanding of thinking’s complex but vital link to improvised speech.
Book Synopsis Fathering Your Father by : Alan Cole
Download or read book Fathering Your Father written by Alan Cole and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fathering Your Father is indubitably an important, timely work. In this incisive re-reading of the sources for the early history of Chinese Chan Buddhism, Cole conveys a new understanding of material familiar to scholars that might well make students engage with these sources more imaginatively. Hitherto scholars have pored over the five or six key sources; now we are invited to read them as successive literary inventions. In short, this study has no competition and is bound to provoke debate."—T. H. Barrett, Professor of East Asian History, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and author of The Woman Who Discovered Printing
Book Synopsis The Nature of Insight by : Robert J. Sternberg
Download or read book The Nature of Insight written by Robert J. Sternberg and published by Bradford Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nature of Insight brings together diverse perspectives, including recent theories and discoveries, to examine the nature and origins of insightful thinking, as well as the history of theory and research on the topic and the methods used to study it. There are chapters by the leading experts in this field, including Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Ronald Finke, Howard Gruber, Marcel Just, David Meyer, David Perkins, Dean Simonton, and Robert Weisberg, among others. The Nature of Insight is divided into five main parts. Following an introduction that reviews the history and methods of the field, part II looks at how people solve challenging puzzles whose answers cannot be obtained through ordinary means. Part III focuses on how people come up with ideas for new inventions, while part IV explores the thinking of some of the most insightful people in the history of civilization. Part V considers metaphors such as evolution and investment as bases for understanding insight. An epilogue integrates all these approaches. Contributors: R.E. Mayer, R.L. Dominowski and P. Dallob. Book Synopsis The Rhetoric of Emotions by : Robert Perinbanayagam
Download or read book The Rhetoric of Emotions written by Robert Perinbanayagam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Burke, founder of the critical method of dramatism, believed that motives and attitudes are constantly generated by individuals as they encounter social situations and material objects in the course of their everyday lives. In The Rhetoric of Emotions, Robert Perinbanayagam proposes that by analysing individuals' experiences, especially through their interaction with creative outlets, we can come to a deeper understanding of how the human mind systematically approaches the emotive process. The author maintains that individuals use spoken language, and all other forms of symbolism, including art and literature, to elicit social cooperation and emotional understanding, both in regard to the world around them and within themselves. Rhetoric and culture are mechanisms for managing values, behaviour, and emotions. In order to ground this philosophical viewpoint, Perinbanayagam strategically discusses famous novels and paintings to show how individuals construct emotional responses to the rhetorical objects at their disposal. In addition to the ideas of Burke and George Herbert Mead, the ideas of Max Weber, Georg Simmel, Charles Sanders Peirce, Edmund Husserl, Alfred Schutz, and Erving Goffman are also reflected in this provocative analysis.
