Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victory for a butterfly happens when the butterfly pollinates a plant. In the same way, victory for the Christian is when we do what Jesus Christ has saved us for. That may mean a variety of things, from preaching to teaching to singing in the choir or writing a book. If we as believers sit on our gifts, we have spiritually failed our God. As we look at the final installment of the Successful Suffering series, we must be prepared to live out that victorious Christian life. In this book are examples of the many who have gone before us and achieved victory in their lives. It might be that the Lord called you to endure an illness or fight a difficult battle, but regardless of what He wants you to do, know that you have already been guaranteed victory by the blood of Christ. In suffering, you and I need to know our God, and to study how He has shown up in the lives of saints. After you know your God, it's time to take the knowledge of your Savior and move ahead. The Lord will give very specific instructions. All He wants to know is if you and I will obey. Get ready to be empowered and encouraged by the way the Lord has worked in the lives of saints before us, because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Book excerpt: The third part of Neurological Disorders in Famous Artists presents painters, musicians, and writers who had to fight against an acute or chronic neurological disease. Sometimes this fight was without success (e.g. Shostakovich, Schumann, Wolf, Pascal), but often a dynamic and paradoxical creativity of the clinical disorder was integrated into their artistic production (e.g. Klee, Ramuz). Occasionally, some even wrote the first report of a medical condition they observed in themselves, like Stendhal who made a detailed report of aphasic transient ischemic attacks before dying of stroke shortly thereafter. In rarer instances, a neurological disease was inaccurately attributed to an artist in order to explain certain features of his work (de Chirico, Schiele). Some chapters in this publication focus on neurological conditions reported in artistic work, including descriptions by Shakespeare and Dumas. Bringing new light to both artists and neurological conditions, this book serves as a valuable and entertaining read for neurologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and anybody interested in arts, literature and music.

Book excerpt: Only the most naïve or tendentious among us would deny the extent and intensity of suffering in the world. Can one hold, consistently with the common view of suffering in the world, that there is an omniscient, omnipotent, perfectly good God? This book argues that one can. Wandering in Darkness first presents the moral psychology and value theory within which one typical traditional theodicy, namely, that of Thomas Aquinas, is embedded. It explicates Aquinas's account of the good for human beings, including the nature of love and union among persons. Eleonore Stump also makes use of developments in neurobiology and developmental psychology to illuminate the nature of such union. Stump then turns to an examination of narratives. In a methodological section focused on epistemological issues, the book uses recent research involving autism spectrum disorder to argue that some philosophical problems are best considered in the context of narratives. Using the methodology argued for, the book gives detailed, innovative exegeses of the stories of Job, Samson, Abraham and Isaac, and Mary of Bethany. In the context of these stories and against the backdrop of Aquinas's other views, Stump presents Aquinas's own theodicy, and shows that Aquinas's theodicy gives a powerful explanation for God's allowing suffering. She concludes by arguing that this explanation constitutes a consistent and cogent defense for the problem of suffering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God. Why doesn’t God do something about suffering? He has, He did, He is, and He will. Suffering and love are inexplicably linked, as God’s love for His people is evidenced in His sending Jesus to carry our sins, griefs, and sufferings on the cross, sacrificially taking what was not His on Himself so that we would not be required to carry it. He has walked the ultimate path of suffering, and He has won victory on our behalf. This truth led Elisabeth to say, “Whatever is in the cup that God is offering to me, whether it be pain and sorrow and suffering and grief along with the many more joys, I’m willing to take it because I trust Him.” Because suffering is never for nothing.

Book excerpt: Pain, Failure and Misery are the Stepping Stones to Success is a story of triumph that only pain and misery could bring. It is a story of hope that is offered for our youth, our family and friends who are suffering from chemical dependency, for those who have lost loved ones as they didn't have to die in vain, and for clinicians who are seeking a way to think that may differ from the norm so we can offer tools to save lives. With an average of 7 Americans dying every hour from a drug overdose it is time we stop focusing on the reduction of supply, because it isn't working and focus on demand. It is time we do something and that time is now.

Book excerpt: Perhaps you are in the midst of difficult circumstances. Maybe you've tried everything you know to change the situation, but nothing is making your trial any easier. In Successful Suffering: Part Two--Walking by Faith, author Shelli Lynn Ross shares with you what God has taught her about walking victoriously through life's most difficult circumstances. Shelli was an active, athletic, college student when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at nineteen. In the years since she was diagnosed with the disease, as her health has deteriorated, her spirit, and love for the Lord, has continued to grow stronger. In her first volume, Shelli explained how choosing faith, not fear, is the first step to being able to suffer successfully. In her second volume, she explores how maintaining an attitude of faith can bring us through adversity and lead us into victory. She offers you the tools you need to not just step out on faith, but to walk by faith. As Shelli examines the way the Lord guided the men and women of the Bible through trials, she pulls from their examples the lessons for all of us who want not only to survive, but to thrive and grow in the Lord. Focusing on the vital message of perseverance through adversity, Successful Suffering seeks to help you gain the insight you need to victoriously walk through your trials.

Book excerpt: Most of us are quick to tell someone who is hurting that this, too, shall pass, and that there is a purpose in their pain. It’s easy to say, but is it easy to live? Shelli Lynn Ross was an engineering student at the University of Illinois when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The one time basketball player, sprinter, aerobics teacher, and star student, went from being extremely independent and active, to being confined to a wheelchair, and needing daily assistance. But her faith in GOD, has kept her. She could have given in to her suffering, but instead Shelli earned her engineering degree and went on to get her master’s degree, and even write this book. Suffering and trials are a part of life for both believers and nonbelievers alike. Believers have an advantage, however; they have the Word of God to get them through. God gives His children every tool necessary to benefit from the trials of life. Shelli never planned on a diagnosis of MS. But she also never could have predicted the many blessings she would receive from her suffering. The key to benefiting from the bad is keeping our eyes on Him. If we depend on the flesh, we will be filled with fear. If we look to God and live by faith, we will be filled with strength and hope. Shelli’s path is not an easy one, but it has been necessary to teach her the purpose of her life. You may be going through similar pain, but weep not, for God is with you, and He will bring you through the darkness and into the light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Luke’s main purpose in writing the book of Acts? In this close study of the entire Acts narrative, McGinnis analyzes Luke’s story of the first Christians in light of ancient rhetorical conventions, concluding that Luke presents his stories to strengthen the missional commitment and practice of his readers. Missional Acts approaches a vast amount of varied mission content systematically, dividing it into rhetorical instruction about missional stimuli, structures, strategies, and suffering, while using a body analogy to provide coherence. Even the enigmatic ending of Acts intentionally advances Luke’s rhetorical purposes. Luke’s teaching finds its culmination in the ministry of his archetypal missionary, the apostle Paul, whose missionary journeys are a Lukan masterclass in mission strategy with much to teach about ministry that transforms whole regions. McGinnis rejects the traditional dichotomy that Paul is either a missionary or a prisoner and shows that throughout his work Luke depicts suffering as an integral part of the mission, seeking to prepare his readers to face opposition of various kinds. Missional Acts will help readers approach Acts in innovative ways by reading it through a primary missional lens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • An "extraordinary ... profoundly moving" history (The New York Times Book Review) of the American Civil War that reveals the ways that death on such a scale changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation. An estiated 750,000 soldiers lost their lives in the American Civil War. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be seven and a half million. In This Republic of Suffering, Drew Gilpin Faust describes how the survivors managed on a practical level and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the unprecedented carnage with its belief in a benevolent God. Throughout, the voices of soldiers and their families, of statesmen, generals, preachers, poets, surgeons, nurses, northerners and southerners come together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. With a new introduction by the author, and a new foreword by Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
