Book Synopsis Wandering in Darkness by : Eleonore Stump
Download or read book Wandering in Darkness written by Eleonore Stump and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only the most naïve or tendentious among us would deny the extent and intensity of suffering in the world. Can one hold, consistently with the common view of suffering in the world, that there is an omniscient, omnipotent, perfectly good God? This book argues that one can. Wandering in Darkness first presents the moral psychology and value theory within which one typical traditional theodicy, namely, that of Thomas Aquinas, is embedded. It explicates Aquinas's account of the good for human beings, including the nature of love and union among persons. Eleonore Stump also makes use of developments in neurobiology and developmental psychology to illuminate the nature of such union. Stump then turns to an examination of narratives. In a methodological section focused on epistemological issues, the book uses recent research involving autism spectrum disorder to argue that some philosophical problems are best considered in the context of narratives. Using the methodology argued for, the book gives detailed, innovative exegeses of the stories of Job, Samson, Abraham and Isaac, and Mary of Bethany. In the context of these stories and against the backdrop of Aquinas's other views, Stump presents Aquinas's own theodicy, and shows that Aquinas's theodicy gives a powerful explanation for God's allowing suffering. She concludes by arguing that this explanation constitutes a consistent and cogent defense for the problem of suffering.

In her second volume, she explores how maintaining an attitude of faith can bring us through adversity and lead us into victory. She offers you the tools you need to not just step out on faith, but to walk by faith. As Shelli examines the way the Lord guided the men and women of the Bible through trials, she pulls from their examples the lessons for all of us who want not only to survive, but to thrive and grow in the Lord. In the same way, victory for the Christian is when we do what Jesus Christ has saved us for. That may mean a variety of things, from preaching to teaching to singing in the choir or writing a book. If we as believers sit on our gifts, we have spiritually failed our God. As we look at the final installment of the Successful Suffering series, we must be prepared to live out that victorious Christian life. In this book are examples of the many who have gone before us and achieved victory in their lives. It might be that the Lord called you to endure an illness or fight a difficult battle, but regardless of what He wants you to do, know that you have already been guaranteed victory by the blood of Christ. In suffering, you and I need to know our God, and to study how He has shown up in the lives of saints. After you know your God, it's time to take the knowledge of your Savior and move ahead. The Lord will give very specific instructions. All He wants to know is if you and I will obey. Get ready to be empowered and encouraged by the way the Lord has worked in the lives of saints before us, because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Book Synopsis The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women by : Valerie Young
Download or read book The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women written by Valerie Young and published by Currency. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to take ownership of your success, overcome self-doubt, and banish the thought patterns that undermine your ability to feel—and act—as bright and capable as others already know you are with this award-winning book by Valerie Young. It’s only because they like me. I was in the right place at the right time. I just work harder than the others. I don’t deserve this. It’s just a matter of time before I am found out. Someone must have made a terrible mistake. If you are a working woman, chances are this internal monologue sounds all too familiar. And you’re not alone. From the high-achieving Ph.D. candidate convinced she’s only been admitted to the program because of a clerical error to the senior executive who worries others will find out she’s in way over her head, a shocking number of accomplished women in all career paths and at every level feel as though they are faking it—impostors in their own lives and careers. While the impostor syndrome is not unique to women, women are more apt to agonize over tiny mistakes, see even constructive criticism as evidence of their shortcomings, and chalk up their accomplishments to luck rather than skill. They often unconsciously overcompensate with crippling perfectionism, overpreparation, maintaining a lower profile, withholding their talents and opinions, or never finishing important projects. When they do succeed, they think, Phew, I fooled ’em again. An internationally known speaker, Valerie Young has devoted her career to understanding women’s most deeply held beliefs about themselves and their success. In her decades of in-the-trenches research, she has uncovered the often surprising reasons why so many accomplished women experience this crushing self-doubt. In The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women, Young gives these women the solution they have been seeking. Combining insightful analysis with effective advice and anecdotes, she explains what the impostor syndrome is, why fraud fears are more common in women, and how you can recognize the way it manifests in your life.

Book Synopsis Successful Suffering Part One: Transformation: From Fear to Faith by : Shelli Ross
Download or read book Successful Suffering Part One: Transformation: From Fear to Faith written by Shelli Ross and published by CrossBooks Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are quick to tell someone who is hurting that this, too, shall pass, and that there is a purpose in their pain. It’s easy to say, but is it easy to live? Shelli Lynn Ross was an engineering student at the University of Illinois when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The one time basketball player, sprinter, aerobics teacher, and star student, went from being extremely independent and active, to being confined to a wheelchair, and needing daily assistance. But her faith in GOD, has kept her. She could have given in to her suffering, but instead Shelli earned her engineering degree and went on to get her master’s degree, and even write this book. Suffering and trials are a part of life for both believers and nonbelievers alike. Believers have an advantage, however; they have the Word of God to get them through. God gives His children every tool necessary to benefit from the trials of life. Shelli never planned on a diagnosis of MS. But she also never could have predicted the many blessings she would receive from her suffering. The key to benefiting from the bad is keeping our eyes on Him. If we depend on the flesh, we will be filled with fear. If we look to God and live by faith, we will be filled with strength and hope. Shelli’s path is not an easy one, but it has been necessary to teach her the purpose of her life. You may be going through similar pain, but weep not, for God is with you, and He will bring you through the darkness and into the light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Walking Through Suffering & Pain Why read a book about suffering and pain? If you haven't suffered pain in the past, or are not suffering now, it is inevitable that you will eventually experience some type of pain. Faith Walking Through Suffering and Pain helps you get ready mentally, but more importantly, spiritually ready for when that time comes. The Bible says that "trials will show that your faith is genuine...tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So, when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor" (1 Peter 1:7 NLT). Author Elmer Towns looks at this sensitive issue with a heart of compassion, eyes of experience, and godly wisdom, providing you a comforting perspective. He first tackles how you can learn from suffering and pain, then gives you the best way to respond, and concludes with why he believes God allows pain. Twenty-eight special devotions are included. And as with all three Faith-Walking books, Faith Walking Through Suffering and Pain concludes with four comprehensive lessons that not only help you get through suffering and pain, but also offers a way to teach others how to cope.

Book Synopsis Supersurvivors by : David B. Feldman
Download or read book Supersurvivors written by David B. Feldman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting where resiliency studies leave off, two psychologists explore the science of remarkable accomplishment in the wake of trauma, revealing the surprising principles that allow people to transform their lives and achieve extraordinary things. Over four billion people worldwide will survive a trauma during their lives. Some will experience severe post-traumatic stress. Most will eventually recover and return to life as normal. But sometimes, survivors do more than bounce back. Sometimes they bounce forward. These are the Supersurvivors—individuals who not only rebuild their lives, but also thrive and grow in ways never previously imagined. Beginning where resilience ends, David B. Feldman and Lee Daniel Kravetz look beyond the tenets of traditional psychology for a deeper understanding of the strength of the human spirit. What they have found flies in the face of conventional wisdom—that positive thinking may hinder more than help; that perceived support can be just as good as the real thing; and that realistic expectations may be a key to great success. They introduce the humble but powerful notion of grounded hope as the foundation for overcoming trauma. The authors interviewed dozens of men and women whose stories serve as the counterpoint to the latest scientific research. Feldman and Kravetz then brilliantly weave these extraordinary narratives with new science, creating an emotionally compelling and thought-provoking look at what is possible in the face of human tragedy. Supersurvivors will reset our thinking about how we deal with challenges, no matter how big or small.
Book Synopsis Could a Good God Permit So Much Suffering? by : James Sterba
Download or read book Could a Good God Permit So Much Suffering? written by James Sterba and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could a Good God Permit So Much Suffering? presents a debate over whether the degree and amount of moral evil that actually exists in our world is logically incompatible with the existence of the all-good, all-powerful God of traditional theism. James Sterba puts the case in favour of this proposition, on the basis that the evils of the world are so horrendous that their occurrence violates principles requiring the prevention of moral evil, conclusively showing the non-existence of an omnipotent and perfectly good God. In reply, Richard Swinburne argues that our major benefactors, parents and the State, have rights to permit us to suffer if doing so is necessary to secure some good for ourselves or others. Therefore, Swinburne claims, as so much greater a benefactor than are parents and the State, it follows that God has a far greater right to allow suffering to a high degree if allowing such suffering is the only logically possible way for God to secure some very great goods for ourselves or others. Further responses from both Sterba and Swinburne continue the debate, ensuring that all lines of argument are thoroughly explored.
