Book Synopsis Detection of Subsurface Cavities by : Edward R. Bates
Download or read book Detection of Subsurface Cavities written by Edward R. Bates and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has been in progress since July 1970 to determine which geophysical and remote-sensing methods offer the most promising results for detecting subsurface cavities and what might be done to further develop them. Through extensive field tests, it has been determined that none of the standard electrical resistivity procedures give consistently good results. As a result of the initial field testing, a new process of data interpretation has been developed for one specific electrode configuration. Cavities less than 10 feet in diameter and at the depths greater than 100 feet were located. Research is continuing to adapt this process for locating water- or mud-filled cavities.

Book Synopsis Geochemical Remote Sensing of the Sub-Surface by : M. Hale
Download or read book Geochemical Remote Sensing of the Sub-Surface written by M. Hale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the techniques for geochemical remote sensing of the subsurface, to present case-history evidence of their successes and limitations, and to consider their further potential. The chapters in Part I focus on the mechanisms and models of dispersion that give rise to the patterns we attempt to detect. Part II deals with the detection of dispersion patterns that owe their origins to processes, such as leakage, that are allied to resource emplacement. Part III describes the detection of dispersion patterns that are generated by processes, such as radiodecay and oxidation, taking place in deposits after their emplacement. Every chapter brings a fresh perspective. Radon has met with much success in uranium exploration, whilst thorough research studies on helium and mercury lead to conclusions that tend to discourage use of these gases in mineral exploration. The case for light hydrocarbons is one of compelling simplicity whilst elaborate mathematical and electrochemical models are advanced for metal migration.

Book Synopsis A New Sensing System for Pre-excavation Subsurface Investigation for Tunnels in Rock Masses by :
Download or read book A New Sensing System for Pre-excavation Subsurface Investigation for Tunnels in Rock Masses written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes a feasibility study and system design for an initial prototype of a sensing system for pre-excavation subsurface investigation for tunnels in rock. Tunnels in rock are very expensive, and costs often rise far above estimates when unforeseen problems are encountered during excavation. New techniques in rapid excavation technology, such as the development of boring machines, have increased the need for improved site investigation. Possibilities for a new sensing system that will provide more complete data on subsurface conditions were investigated. Favorable results obtained from high-resolution geophysical sensing in boreholes have been combined with improvements in drilling of long, horizontal, precise boreholes in order to provide an economical alternative to pilot tunnel for subsurface investigation.
