Book excerpt: Site 16 was investigated with subsurface borings to establish the geological setting and to evaluate the possible presence of buried waste and contaminated ground water. Magnetic and conductivity surveys suggested only one unexplained weak anomaly within an area of possible waste burial in the past. Three new monitoring wells together with two placed in 1981 surround the suspect area on the down-gradient side. Analysis of water samples taken one month and two months after installation of these wells revealed no parameters exceeding Federal primary drinking water standards. The concentration of chromium in the ground water is substantially lower than previously reported. The site is considered to be free of serious contamination.

Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this interim report is the transference of analytical data to Thiokol Corporation and the U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency (USATHAMA) to allow for in-process review and focusing of the remaining geotechnical and analytical effort on those areas found to be of continued concern. At the outset of this project, nine sites within Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant were designated as potential areas of concern. These areas have been investigated geotechnically and analytically through the logging of existing soil conditions, as well as the sampling of groundwaters, surface waters, sediments, and soils at each of the study areas. The technical results associated with the geotechnical investigation have been submitted under separate cover in November 1982 as Interim Technical Report No. 1. This document contains the analytical data and field sampling methodology used for this survey. The following sections of this interim report will rely heavily on other documents previously prepared by Environmental Protection Systems, Inc. (EPS) and already submitted to Thiokol and USATHAMA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the US Army to succeed in the 21st Century, Soldiers of all ranks must understand and use Mission Command. Mission Command empowers leaders at all levels, allowing them to synchronize all warfighting functions and information systems to seize, retain, and exploit the initiative against a range of adversaries. This collection of historical vignettes seeks to sharpen our understanding of Mission Command philosophy and practice by providing examples from the past in which Mission Command principles played a decisive role. Some vignettes show junior officers following their commander's intent and exercising disciplined initiative in very chaotic combat operations. Others recount how field grade officers built cohesive teams that relied on mutual trust to achieve key operational objectives. Each historical account is complemented by an annotated explanation of how the six Mission Command principles shaped the action. For this reason, the collection is ideal for leader development in the Army school system as well as for unit and individual professional development. Mission Command places great responsibility on our Soldiers.
