Book excerpt: Summary: As an extension of the transonic area rule, a concept for interrelating the wave drags of wing-body combinations at moderate supersonic speeds with axial developments of cross-sectional area has been derived. The wave drag of a combination at a given supersonic speed is related to a number of developments of cross-sectional areas as intersected by Mach planes. On the basis of this concept and other design procedures, a structurally feasible, swept-wing--indented-body combination has been designed to have relatively high maximum lift-drag ratios over a range of transonic and moderate supersonic Mach numbers. The wing of the combination has been designed to have reduced drag associated with lift and, when used with an indented body, to have low zero-lift wave drag. Experimental results have been obtained for this configuration at Mach numbers from 0.80 to 2.01. Maximum lift-drag ratios of approximately 14 and 9 were measured at Mach numbers of 1.15 and 1.41, respectively.

Book excerpt: This report presents a compilation of most of the zero-lift drag results obtained from free-flight measurements made by the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Division on fin-stabilized bodies of revolution. The data are arranged on standard forms, which also contain the significant geometrical factors. Supplementary data have been provided to facilitate the determination of the body pressure drags from the measured total drags. Summary plots and discussions have been included to provide a unified and broad picture of the effects of body geometry on zero-lift drag. The Mach number range of the tests extends from 0.6 to approximately 2.0 and the Reynolds numbers based on body length from 2,000,000 to 100,000,000.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation studies in detail the changes occurring in near wake dynamics associated with base drag reduction on bluff bodies achieved via boundary layer modification. A wedge model and a flat plate model are used to study bluff bodies over a range of Reynolds number of 0.8 x 10 6 -0.3 x 10 6 . The boundary layer on both these models is modified using fore-body surface roughness, by applying sand grains with a mean diameter of 2.2 mm to their fore-body surfaces. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements, as well as simultaneous PIV and time-resolved base pressure measurements, are performed on these models in order to determine the near wake changes associated with base drag reduction. For the wedge model, the PIV measurements capture a downstream region of x/h = 0-1.5, whereas, for the flat plate model, the PIV measurements are performed at three different distances downstream, x/h = 0-7, 7-14 and 14-21. The PIV results are analyzed using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) in order to identify the changes in coherent structures associated with base drag reduction. It is observed from the POD results that, when there is a reduction in base drag, the vortex shedding in the near wake becomes more organized, its strength decreases, and the vortex convects faster. This result differs from those obtained in earlier studies, where base drag reduction is achieved by interrupting vortex shedding. In order to reconstruct near wake dynamics simultaneous PIV and time-resolved pressure measurements are used. Using Linear Stochastic Estimation (LSE)-POD technique, the cycle-to-cycle variation in vortex shedding is accurately captured. It is observed from the reconstruction that for the smooth test cases, the cycle-to-cycle variations in the vortex shedding are significantly higher, as compared to the rough test cases.

Book excerpt: The proposition that innovation is critical in the cost-effective design and development of successful military aircraft is still subject to some debate. RAND research indicates that innovation is promoted by intense competition among three or more industry competitors. Given the critical policy importance of this issue in the current environment of drastic consolidation of the aerospace defense industry, the authors here examine the history of the major prime contractors in developing jet fighters since World War II. They make use of an extensive RAND database that includes nearly all jet fighters, fighter-attack aircraft, and bombers developed and flown by U.S. industry since 1945, as well as all related prototypes, modifications, upgrades, etc. The report concludes that (1) experience matters, because of the tendency to specialize and thus to develop system-specific expertise; (2) yet the most dramatic innovations and breakthroughs came from secondary or marginal players trying to compete with the industry leaders; and (3) dedicated military R&D conducted or directly funded by the U.S. government has been critical in the development of new higher-performance fighters and bombers.
