Book excerpt: Based on a major international research project undertaken by The Institute for East West Studies, this book provides the first comprehensive analysis of an important, but little explored, feature of post-Cold War Europe: the emergence of subregional cooperation in areas such as the Barents, the Baltic Sea, Central Europe and the Black Sea. It analyses the role of subregional cooperation in the new Europe, provides detailed case studies of the new subregional groups and examines their relations with NATO and the European Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study into the promotion of regional integration as a central pillar of European Union (EU) relations with the rest of the world. It is a strategy to deal with a core security challenge: the transformation of conflicts and, in particular, regional conflicts. Yet to what extent has the promotion of regional integration been successful in transforming conflicts? What can we regard as the core mechanisms of such an impact? This volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the nexus between promoting integration and conflict transformation. The authors systematically compare the consequences of EU involvement in eight conflicts in four world regions within a common framework. In doing so, they focus on the promotion of integration as a preventative strategy to avoid conflicts turning violent and as a long-term strategy to transform violent conflicts by placing them in a broader institutional context. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in European foreign policy, comparative regionalism, and conflict resolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said about the driving forces of region-building processes or regionalization worldwide, yet few systematic and comparative studies have been conducted on how regions can contribute to the building of other regions - and more concretely, how the European Union has 'pushed' for regionalization worldwide. This comparative book investigates the impact that the EU has on regionalization elsewhere through its inter-regional relations. Covering agriculture, trade, ASEAN, NAFTA, MERCOSUR and Commonwealth amongst other topics, it investigates whether the EU contributes directly, as well as indirectly, to increased regional integration in different parts of the world.

Sub-regional projects covered include the Central European Free Trade Area, the Black Sea Economic Scheme, Ecowas in West Africa, Mercosur, The Association of Caribbean States, Chilean strategies of subregional cooperation, the 'Greater China' project, Asean and the East Asian Economic Caucus. This is the first volume of its kind to embrace such a geographically diverse treatment of the subregional system. Through comparison of the various schemes it also seeks to mount a case for a 'new IPE' perspective in the understanding of subregional cooperation.

Comparisons are drawn between these efforts and those made in the EU, where integration has progressed much further. The book asks: what explains the variation in achievements? What kind of agreements are needed to produce regional integration? Is 'pooling and delegation' of sovereignty necessary? How important is regional leadership?

This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2008 will be a decisive one for the process of regional cooperation in South East Europe (SEE). First, the transition from the Stability Pact to the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) will become effective with the establishment of the RCC and its Secretariat in Sarajevo, indicating a major evolution towards more regional ownership. Secondly, the renewed and reframed Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA), or CEFTA 2006, will officially enter into force for all parties. Third, the Slovenian European Union presidency will endeavor to reaffirm the 2003 EU Thessaloniki Agenda, and work towards the completion of the network of Stabilization and Association Agreements and the enhancement of regional cooperation in several areas. This book addresses the challenges and prospects of regional cooperation in SEE by considering the increased diversity in the region, the new divisions and contradictions induced by the latest round of EU enlargement, the coexistence of numerous cooperation programs, and the still unresolved hard security issues. The book also discusses why SEE countries should embrace the process of wider regional cooperation that goes beyond too-narrowly conceived regional frameworks. A pan-European approach links SEE with countries in the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, Central Europe, and the Mediterranean basin. Upgraded and broadened regional cooperation in SEE would not interfere with, but rather complement and reinforce, EU integration and the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), requiring both innovative thinking and the careful recalibration of previous regional initiatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debates on regionalism have been polarized between European Union (EU) scholars and non-EU scholars, with the assumption being that regionalism within the EU and other regions of the world are quite distinct, with little to be learnt from dialogue with each other. This book challenges such assumptions and calls for a genuine debate between scholars of regionalism. This book demonstrates that more can and needs to be learned about regional integration all over the world through comparison and reflection on specific regional trends. Beginning with a theoretically driven introduction, leading experts in the field are brought together to offer a series of case studies on regional integration within Latin America, Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. In Part III the authors investigate the links between the EU and selected other regional organisations and processes, exploring the dynamics through which these interregional relations are developing and the implications they have for the study of contemporary regionalism/regionalisation both inside and beyond the continent of Europe. The conclusions set out a challenging research agenda for comparative studies in the field. Addressing one of the under-explored aspects of EU studies, the EU’s coexistence with other pan-continental/regional organisations in the European continent, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism, IPE, European Studies and international politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the EU isolated within the emergent multipolar world? Concentrating on interregional relations and focussing on the European Union’s (EU) evolving international role with regards to regional cooperation, this innovative book collects a set of fresh empirical analyses of interregional ties binding the EU with its Eastern and Southern neighbourhood, as well as with Asia, Africa and the Americas. The 25 leading authors from 5 continents have contributed original and diverse chapters and the book advances a novel theoretical ‘post-revisionist’ approach beyond both the Eurocentrism of ‘Europe First’ perspectives as well as the Euroscepticism of those advocating to simply move ’Beyond Europe’. After a Foreword by A. Acharya, the book’s five sections reflect the main drivers of EU interregional policies: The European Union as a Sophisticated Laboratory of Regional and Interregional Cooperation (with chapters by M. Telò, L. Fawcett and T. Risse), De Facto Drivers of Regionalism (F. Ponjaert, M. Shu, A. Valladão and C. Jakobeit), De Jure Drivers of Regionalism (S. Lavenex, G. Finizio, C. Jakobeit, R. Coman, C. Cocq & S. Teo L-Shah), Cognitive Drivers of Regionalism (J. Rüland, E. Fitriani, S. Stavridis & S. Kingah, P. Bacon), and Instrumental Drivers of Regionalism (B. Delcourt, C. Olsson & G. Müller, A. Malamud & P. Seabra and L. Fioramonti & J. Kostopoulos).
