Book excerpt: In 1989, after several years of discussion and negotiation, the Regional Econornics Applications Laboratory (REAL) was formed. This unique relationship between the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been a significant source of intellectual inspiration for many students, visiting colleagues and members of the participating institutions for the past decade. The idea for REAL was hatched by Philip Israilevich and Geoffrey Hewings in typical Chicago style - in the back room of a local bar. In early December 1997, their collaboration came to an untimely end when Philip died after a three-year battle with cancer. The challenge of moving across a spectrum from theory to model development to implementation and interpretation provided the underlying motivation for REAL's formation together with an equally important component, namely the translation of many of these efforts into a form that could be understood and implemented by policy makers. For Philip, REAL and the Regional Science Association International provided the forums for his intellectual endeavors, although he also contributed many papers in banking. In recognition of his contributions and to provide a sense of the current research in the fields in which he published, many of the authors of these chapters assembled in Chicago in November, 1998 to participate in a small seminar in his honor. Several others who were not able to come nevertheless contributed chapters to this volume. Subsequently, all of the papers have been revised and updated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several important topics in spatial and spatio-temporal statistics developed in the last 15 years have not received enough attention in textbooks. Modeling Spatio-Temporal Data: Markov Random Fields, Objectives Bayes, and Multiscale Models aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of a variety of recently proposed approaches for the analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal datasets, including proper Gaussian Markov random fields, dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal models, and objective priors for spatial and spatio-temporal models. The goal is to make these approaches more accessible to practitioners, and to stimulate additional research in these important areas of spatial and spatio-temporal statistics. Key topics: Proper Gaussian Markov random fields and their uses as building blocks for spatio-temporal models and multiscale models. Hierarchical models with intrinsic conditional autoregressive priors for spatial random effects, including reference priors, results on fast computations, and objective Bayes model selection. Objective priors for state-space models and a new approximate reference prior for a spatio-temporal model with dynamic spatio-temporal random effects. Spatio-temporal models based on proper Gaussian Markov random fields for Poisson observations. Dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal thresholding for spatial clustering and data compression. Multiscale spatio-temporal assimilation of computer model output and monitoring station data. Dynamic multiscale heteroscedastic multivariate spatio-temporal models. The M-open multiple optima paradox and some of its practical implications for multiscale modeling. Ensembles of dynamic multiscale spatio-temporal models for smooth spatio-temporal processes. The audience for this book are practitioners, researchers, and graduate students in statistics, data science, machine learning, and related fields. Prerequisites for this book are master's-level courses on statistical inference, linear models, and Bayesian statistics. This book can be used as a textbook for a special topics course on spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, as well as supplementary material for graduate courses on spatial and spatio-temporal modeling.

Book excerpt: Ir Genes and Ia Antigens features papers that were presented at the Third Ir Gene Workshop held in Asilomar, California, December 13-16, 1976. The book is organized into seven parts that correspond to the seven sessions held during the workshop. The first session focused on the definition of the I-E and I-C subregions, and the mapping and cellular expression of complementing Ir genes. The second session included papers on the expression of gene products of the I region. The third session covered two major areas: (1) the biochemical characterization and primary structure of la antigens; and (2) the possible carbohydrate nature of la antigenic determinant. The studies presented in the fourth session focused on the role of I-region gene products in cellular interactions. The fifth session discussed the "recognition" functions controlled by the I region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The sixth session featured papers on la-containing T cell factors. Finally, the seventh session examined the properties of T-cell antigen receptors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive work explores interfacial instability and pattern formation in dynamic systems away from the equilibrium state in solidification and crystal growth. Further, this significantly expanded 2nd edition introduces and reviews the progress made during the last two decades. In particular, it describes the most prominent pattern formation phenomena commonly observed in material processing and crystal growth in the framework of the previously established interfacial wave theory, including free dendritic growth from undercooled melt, cellular growth and eutectic growth in directional solidification, as well as viscous fingering in Hele-Shaw flow. It elucidates the key problems, systematically derives their mathematical solutions by pursuing a unified, asymptotic approach, and finally carefully examines these results by comparing them with the available experimental results. The asymptotic approach described here will be useful for the investigation of pattern formation phenomena occurring in a much broader class of inhomogeneous dynamical systems. In addition, the results on global stability and selection mechanisms of pattern formation will be of particular interest to researchers working on material processing and crystal growth. The stability mechanisms of a curved front and the pattern formation have been fundamental subjects in the areas of condensed-matter physics, materials science, crystal growth, and fluid mechanics for some time now. This book offers a stimulating and insightful introduction for all physicists, engineers and applied mathematicians working in the fields of soft condensed-matter physics, materials science, mechanical and chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, and nonlinear sciences.
