Book excerpt: Excerpt from Subject Matter Summaries of Statistics for Industries and Geographic Areas The advice of trade associations, individual manufacturers, Government agencies, and research and marketing organizations was most valuable in determining the content of the reports and in developing techniques for minimizing the burden of reporting. Also noteworthy was the assistance of the Advisory Council on Federal Reports, which through special panels of industry experts advised on the feasibility of collecting various types of data. Timely publicity was given to the census by Chambers of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers and other business groups, trade papers, local newspapers, and television and radio stations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States Census of Manufactures, 1954, Vol. 1: Summary Statistics; Subject Matter Summaries of Statistics for Industries and Geographic Areas As in the 1947 Census and subsequent Annual Surveys, 1954 man-hours data were requested by quarter for the calendar year, on the basis of 1947 Census pretests. These pretests indicated that quarterly data could be reported more readily than either monthly or annual data. The man hours figures issued by the Census differ from those published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which cover all hours paid for, whether or not worked, and relate only to the payroll period ending nearest the middle of each month. The 1954 Census definition of man-hours all man-hours at the plant, including stand-by hours paid for) is a clarification, without altering the desired concept, of the 1947 definition which simply called for all man-hours worked. Man-hours were generally well reported except in the case of small establishments which, as in the 1947 Census, experienced some difficulty in distinguishing between production and other types of workers, and except for some industries like apparel where work is commonly performed on a piece rate basis. Where man-hours were not reported and it was not feasible to obtain the information by correspondence, the data were estimated. Because this estimating was largely confined to small establish ments, there is no significant qualification to the validity of overall industry and geographic area totals for man-hours, ex cept for sawmills and a few other industries characterized by small establishments or by other limitations in their record keeping affecting the reporting of man-hour information. How ever, the man hour figures for establishments with fewer than 10 employees, shown in the Size of Establishment chapter of the Summary Volume, should. Be interpreted with this factor in mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, this classic book is widely considered the leading text on Bayesian methods, lauded for its accessible, practical approach to analyzing data and solving research problems. Bayesian Data Analysis, Third Edition continues to take an applied approach to analysis using up-to-date Bayesian methods. The authors—all leaders in the statistics community—introduce basic concepts from a data-analytic perspective before presenting advanced methods. Throughout the text, numerous worked examples drawn from real applications and research emphasize the use of Bayesian inference in practice. New to the Third Edition Four new chapters on nonparametric modeling Coverage of weakly informative priors and boundary-avoiding priors Updated discussion of cross-validation and predictive information criteria Improved convergence monitoring and effective sample size calculations for iterative simulation Presentations of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, variational Bayes, and expectation propagation New and revised software code The book can be used in three different ways. For undergraduate students, it introduces Bayesian inference starting from first principles. For graduate students, the text presents effective current approaches to Bayesian modeling and computation in statistics and related fields. For researchers, it provides an assortment of Bayesian methods in applied statistics. Additional materials, including data sets used in the examples, solutions to selected exercises, and software instructions, are available on the book’s web page.
