Book excerpt: A novel hybrid organic/inorganic tri-block copolymer of polystyrene-butadiene-polystyrene (SBS) containing grafted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules was synthesized by a hydrosilation method. The POSS molecules were designed to contain a single silane functional group, which was used to graft onto the dangling 1,2 butadienes in the polybutadiene soft block. Unlike typical free radical copolymerizations commonly used for many other POSS incorporations investigated, this synthesis method allows us to make a series of polymers with varying amounts of POSS without any change to the overall degree of polymerization or structure of the main SBS backbone. This gives us a unique opportunity to study the POSS behavior in the matrix and know that all differences are solely due to the POSS grafted to the soft continuous butadiene phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the grafted POSS are very well dispersed in the matrix of the hybrid polymer, which is compared to the strong phase segregation observed in a POSS physical blend. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that although the cylindrical morphology attributed to the styrene component was not altered by the presence of POSS, but attachment of POSS to the continuous phase (polybutadiene block) causes the packing of discrete phase (polystyrene blocks) to lack long-range features. Results of dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the POSS has sterically hindered the motion of the polybutadiene blocks. More interestingly, the presence of POSS in the soft segments also resulted in a tapered tan peak associated with the glass transition of polystyrene and a higher tensile strength when deformed at temperature near Tg of polystyrene without affecting the elongational behavior of SBS at temperatures above Tg of polybutadiene.

Book excerpt: Two symmetric triblock polystyrene-butadiene-polystyrene (SBS) copolymers with different styrene content were grafted with varying amounts of isobutyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules. The POSS octamers, R'R7Si8O12 were designed to contain a single silane functional group, R', which was used to graft onto the dangling 1,2 butadienes in the polybutadiene block and seven identical organic groups, R=isobutyl (iBu). Morphology and phase transitions of these iBu-POSS modified SBS were investigated using small angle X-ray scattering and rheological methods. It was observed that POSS with isobutyl moiety, when grafted to the polybutadiene (PB), appears to show a high affinity to stay within the PB domain; effectively, they enhance the segregation between butadiene and styrene domains. This causes a shift in the phase diagram to lower styrene content. From the rheology, we observed that values of storage modulus, G', at temperatures below the order-disorder transition increase due to the grafting of iBu-POSS. These observations lead us to conclude that the local order morphology between styrene and butadiene domains was better preserved due to the enhanced segregation forced by iBu-POSS.

Among inorganic nanoparticles, functionalized POSS are unique nano-building blocks that can be used to create a wide variety of hybrid and composite materials, where precise control of nanostructures and properties is required. This book describes the influence of incorporation of POSS moieties into (organic) polymer matrices on the mechanical, thermal and flammability behavior of composites and hybrid organic-inorganic materials. Importantly, POSS-containing materials can be bio-functionalized by linking e.g. peptides and growth factors through appropriate surface modification in order to enhance the haemo-compatibility of cardiovascular devices made of these materials. This volume includes descriptions of synthesis routes of POSS and POSS-containing polymeric materials (e.g. based on polyolefines, epoxy resins and polyurethanes), presentation of POSS’ role as flame retardants and as biocompatible linker, as well as the depiction of decomposition and ageing processes.

Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary approach that explores the diverse properties, functions, and applications of nanomaterials Drawing together the many scientific and engineering disciplines underlying the development of nanomaterials, Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials provides a multidisciplinary review of the diverse properties, functions, and applications of nanomaterials. The book examines both nanoparticles, which have larger-scale equivalents, and uniquely assembled nanomaterials, which do not have larger-scale equivalents. Readers will gain a tremendous appreciation of the versatility of nanomaterials as well as an understanding of how the same nanomaterial can have several distinct applications across a broad range of fields and industries. Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials is divided into three sections: Section I, Overview, describes the scientific phenomena underlying the special properties of nanomaterials, making them desirable as novel materials and different from conventional solids. Next, readers will learn about the effect of nanomaterials on contemporary society as well as future trends in nanomaterials production and use. Section II, Processing and Analysis, explores several experimental approaches in nanomaterial fabrication and characterization as well as in theoretical approaches in modeling and simulation. Section III, Applications, offers detailed examples of nanomaterial applications in alternative energy, thermal management, environmental cleanup, water treatment, and biomedicine. Each chapter has been written by one or more leading experts in the science, engineering, and application of nanomaterials. Within each chapter, readers will find a thorough review of the current literature, with references to facilitate further investigation of individual topics. Underscoring the multidisciplinary and multifunctional characteristics of nanomaterials, this book is recommended for students and professionals in science and engineering who need a broad perspective on both the nature and application of nanomaterials. The text also sets the stage for the development of new nanomaterials and new applications.

Book excerpt: Silicon based materials and polymers are made of silicon containing polymers, mainly macromolecular siloxanes (silicones). This book covers the different kinds of siliconbased polymers: silicones, silsesquioxanes (POSS), and silicon-based copolymers. Other silicon containig polymers: polycarbosilanes, polysilazanes, siloxane-organic copolymers, silicon derived high-tech ceramics: silicon carbide and oxycarbide, silicon nitride, etc. have also a very important practical meaning and a hudge number of practical applications. These materials make up products in a variety of industries and products, including technical and medical applicatons. Polycrystalline silicon is the basic material for large scale photovoltaic (PV) applications as solar cells. Technical applications of crystalline (c-Si) and amorphous (a-Si) silicon (fully inorganic materials), silicon nanowires are still quickly growing, especially in the fi eld of microelectronics, optoelectronics, photonics. and photovoltaics, catalysts, and different electronic devices (e.g. sensors, thermoelectric devices). This book is ideal for researchers and as such covers the industrial perspective of using each class of silicon based materials. Discusses silanes, silane coupling agents (SCA), silica, silicates, silane modified fillers, silsesquioxanes, silicones, and other silicon polymers and copolymers for practical applications as polymeric materials and very useful ingredients in materials science.

Carbon fiber composites, typically plastics reinforced with the carbon fibers, are key materials in the 21st century and have already had a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions. Though, as with any composite material, the interface where each component meets, in this case the fiber and plastic, is critical to the overall performance. This text summarizes recent efforts to manipulate and optimize the interfacial interaction between these dissimilar materials to improve overall performance.

Book excerpt: A triblock copolymer of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) was blended with a high and a low molecular weight polybutadiene (designated as PB(H) and PB(L) respectively). Electron micrographs of these blends show that PB(L) was solubilized into the butadiene domains of the SBS; while PB(H) was present in a separate phase. Dynamic mechanical data of the SBS/PB(L) blends indicate the presence of an intermediate loss peak between those of the glass transitions of the styrene and butadiene blocks in SBS, which can be attributed to the slippage of untrapped entanglements of PB(L) chains. Similar data for blends containing PB(H) also shows an intermediate loss peak, which is, however, due to crystallization and melting of the poly-cis-butadiene chains. Dynamic mechanical data for crosslinked blends were also taken for comparison.
