Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is a powerful nondestructive testing tool for examining the behavior of materials deforming under stress. One can use it to monitor fracture or damage in a rock mass by listening to AE events during failure under compressive loads. In this paper, an experimental study on the AE source location in square cylinder granite specimens under uniaxial compression is reported. In order to determine the three-dimensional location of AE events, eight AE sensors were mounted on the specimen. The AE source location was determined via the acquisition of eight channel AE sensors after filtering, processing, reporting, and visualizing seismic data. On the basis of the laboratory experiment results, the granite sample was numerically simulated via the Burgers model using the discrete element program PFC2D (Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions) to further study the mechanism of fracture initiation and propagation in intact rock. In PFC2D, materials may be modeled as either bonded (cemented) or unbonded (granular) assemblies of particles. It can describe nonlinear behavior and localization with accuracy that cannot be matched by typical finite element programs. The consistency of stress-strain curves obtained with PFC2D and with the test results shows that PFC2D is a practical tool for reproducing AE events in rock, and use of the Burgers model is feasible in the field of rock failure and provides an analysis of the microcracking activity inside the rock volume to predict rock fracture patterns under uniaxial loading conditions.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, controlled laboratory experiments of rock fracture & friction, and monitoring and analyses of accompanying acoustic emissions (AE), and application of fractals to investigate the failure zone development and its growth in rock under simulated field conditions have become possible. This development has contributed more to the fracture mechanics research of rock as well as for better planning and execution of field experiments aimed at structural health monitoring, and forewarning and control of rock bursts in deep mines etc. Furthermore, the utilization of simpler and PC-based AE monitoring systems can yield fruitful results to detect, track, analyze and quantify the various stages of microcrack damage in rock as detailed in this monograph. Among various parameters, the occurrence rate of AE events and energy, b-values, cumulative energy counts and energy per event have been found to be more helpful to make a detailed study and quantify the stress-induced microcrack damage in rock. This monograph will be useful for active researchers, academicians, NDT professionals and graduate students of geological sciences and related engineering fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined finite discrete element method is a relatively new computational tool aimed at problems involving static and / or dynamic behaviour of systems involving a large number of solid deformable bodies. Such problems include fragmentation using explosives (e.g rock blasting), impacts, demolition (collapsing buildings), blast loads, digging and loading processes, and powder technology. The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). The topic is gaining in importance, and is at the forefront of some of the current efforts in computational modeling of the failure of solids. * Accompanying source codes plus input and output files available on the Internet * Important applications such as mining engineering, rock blasting and petroleum engineering * Includes practical examples of applications areas Essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and software engineers working in mechanical engineering.

Book excerpt: The analysis of crack problems through fracture mechanics has been applied to the study of materials such as glass, metals and ceramics because relatively simple fracture criteria describe the failure of these materials. The increased attention paid to experimental rock fracture mechanics has led to major contributions to the solving of geophysical problems. The text presents a concise treatment of the physics and mathematics of a representative selection of problems from areas such as earthquake mechanics and prediction, hydraulic fracturing, hot dry rock geothermal energy, fault mechanics, and dynamic fragmentation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originally appeared in German in 1974, under the title "Bergschadenkunde" (mining subsidence engineering), and then in Russian in 1978, published by Nedra of Moscow. When the German edition was almost out of print, Springer-Verlag decided to bring out a new edition, this time in English. For this English version the text has been thoroughly revised, enlarged, and sup plemented by over 100 new figures. The book deals with the current state of international knowl edge on strata and ground movement over mine workings, with its damaging effects on mine shafts and the land surface, and with measures for regulating mining damage in law and reducing it in practice. Discussion begins with the mine excavation underground - the cause - and ends with the damage to surface structure- the effect. Methods of roof control, including the subject of rock bursts, are not discussed, since that is a field concerned more with the safety of underground workings than with minimizing damage at the surface. Of the 500 literature references in the German edi tion, only the more important for an international readership have been retained, but no value judgement on the many pUblica tions not mentioned should be read into this. The book is principally intended as a working aid for the mine surveyor, the mining engineer, the architect, and the civil engineer. For the student and the post-graduate researcher, it of fers a summary and guide to this whole field of knowledge.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the part of the field of ex-' perimental rock deformation that is dominated by the phenomena of brittle fracture on one scale or another. Thus a distinction has been drawn between the fields of brittle und ductile behaviour in rock, corresponding more or less to a distinction between the phenomena of fracture and flow. It is hoped eventually to present a survey of the ductile field in a separate volume. The last chapter of this volume deals with the transition between the two fields. The scope of this survey has been limited to the mec.hanical properties of rock viewed as a material on the laboratory scale. Thus, the topic and approach is of a "materials science" kind rather than of a "structures" kind. We are dealing with only one part of the wider field of rock mechanics, which also includes structural or boundary value problems, for example, those of the stability of slopes, the collapse of mine openings, earth quakes, the folding of stratified rock, and the convec tive motion of the earth's mantle. One topic thus ex cluded is the role of jointing, which it is commonly necessary to take into account in applications in engi neering and mining, and probably often in geology too.

Book excerpt: This monograph analyses in detail the physical aspects of the elastic waves radiation during deformation or fracture of materials. It presents the methodological bases for the practical use of acoustic emission device, and describes the results of theoretical and experimental researches of evaluation of the crack growth resistance of materials, selection of the useful AE signals. The efficiency of this methodology is shown through the diagnostics of various-purpose industrial objects. The authors obtain results of experimental researches with the help of the new methods and facilities.
