Book excerpt: All stages are important in a person’s life, whether it is infancy, childhood, adolescence or adulthood, but arguably the most sensitive stage is adolescence; which starts at around 13 and ends at approximately 19 years. It is the stage when the urge of life reaches its highest peak. Accidents, Natural death and conflicts are creating generations of orphaned children. In addition the loss of a parent, orphaned children may face many hardships during their adolescence including decline in health, nutrition and psychological wellbeing. The number of children estimated to be orphaned due to all causes is estimated to be between 143 million and 210 million (UNICEF, 2012). Children and adolescents in particular are at increased risk for unresolved or complicated bereavement because of their development, vulnerability and emotional dependency. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the differences in self-concept, mental health and academic achievement of orphan and non-orphan adolescents. The study adds to the existing literature and will become a guideline for researchers, educators, administrators and counselors to guide the students in a proper way and to frame the suitable educational environment where the adolescents can be accommodated and their self-concept, mental health and academic achievement may improve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research findings showed that secondary school students in Hong Kong face many challenges. In particular, morbid emphasis on academic excellence has created much competition and stress in high school students. It was estimated that around one-fifth of secondary school students in Hong Kong had different forms of mental disorders. In a three-year longitudinal study, it was found that the prevalence rates of Internet addiction in Secondary 1, Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 students were 26.4%, 26.6% and 22.5%, respectively. In the same study, suicidal ideation in junior secondary school students was found in more than one-tenth of the students. At the same time, there were more than two-tenths of students showing signs of self-harm and suicidal behavior in junior secondary years. The number of adolescents experiencing economic disadvantage has increased while family solidarity has dropped in recent years. In spite of these adolescent developmental issues, the lack of life education and life skills training in secondary school students has made the situation worse. Although moral and civic education is one of the pillars in the new 6-year secondary school curriculum, there are several problems involved. First, the coverage on social and emotional learning in the curriculum guide is very thin. Second, although there are curricula materials on life skills training in the field, validated curricula are almost non-existent. In fact, in a review of adolescent prevention and positive youth development programs in Asia, Shek and Yu pointed out that there were very few validated evidence-based programs in Hong Kong. Third, training in social-emotional learning and adolescent prevention programs is grossly inadequate in Hong Kong. Finally, while nobody would dispute the importance of life skills and psychosocial competence, such topics are seldom taught in depth in the school contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, a vast number of children and adolescents suffer from mental and neurological disorders and only a small proportion of them receive adequate care. This is so in both developing and developed countries. The need to raise awareness about this problem and provide specific advice regarding their prevention and treatment was identified as a priority for the World Psychiatric Association by Professor Ahmed Okasha during his Presidency of the Association and resulted in the creation of his Presidential Programme on Child Mental Health. This book presents some of the fruits of this programme and constitutes a global call to action for mental health workers and policy makers. The Mental Health of Children and Adolescents: An area of global neglect brings together information on the burden of mental disorders in childhood and adolescence with methods of raising public awareness of these problems. The book also describes therapeutic and preventive interventions that could diminish them. It then presents the results of field studies in Brazil, Egypt and Russia documenting the effectiveness of interventions to prevent school dropout in those three very different countries. With its emphasis on practical guidance for the development of interventions to prevent or treat child and adolescent mental health, The Mental Health of Children and Adolescents: An area of global neglect provides much-needed information of direct interest to health professionals and the many others involved in the provision of health care to children and adolescents in both the developing and the developed countries.

In this book, the prevalence and correlates of psychological distress, including issues in relation to bullying victimization, poly-victimization, obesogenic behavior, ideal cardiovascular health behavior, and HIV status, were studied in 19 countries. The results will inform researchers and readers of the relevance of school and youth mental health programs and related policies targeting psychological well-being in the adolescent population"--

Book excerpt: Students mental health is an important issue all over the world especially students at the college and university level. World Mental Health Survey among college students across 21 countries reported that 20.3% had experienced psychiatric disorder. Similar findings have also been reported from various states in India. India is in the third position in terms of number of higher education institutions after USA and China. Increase in students enrolment in higher education has associated with increase in mental health problems. On the other hand, religious practices was found to have helped them to cope with their depression, anxiety and stress and improved their mental health as well as well-being as found in many studies. The present study has tried to explore the relationship between religious practices of younger people and their mental health in terms of depression, anxiety and stress in the context of Indian society. It was also meant to find out how religious practices varied across students of college and universities in terms of their different personal and social indicators i.e., gender, age, habitat, family type, marital status and so on. The study also wanted to explore the association between religious practices by students and their levels of depression, anxiety and stress to see the effectiveness of the prior on the latter. In the current cross-sectional study on religious practices, 2210 college and university students from twenty one districts of West Bengal took part. The researcher used Religious Activity Scale (RAS) and DASS-21 as well as its Bengali translation, which were made by the researcher and checked for accuracy. The collected data was put through IBM SPSS software and then shown graphically in Microsoft Excel. The religious practices of students varied by gender, where they lived, their marital status, disability and previous history of mental health issues. The study found religious practices significantly associated with less depression, anxiety and stress and therefore increased mental health and well-being which confirms the existing evidences from previous studies on relationship between religiousness and mental health conducted in last few decades across the world.
