Book excerpt: Although glycoproteins and proteoglycans have been a subject of re search for many years, it is only during the last five or so years that they have aroused the interest of a very broad cross section of investigators in the biological sciences. The reason for this expanded interest in these molecules is simple: not only are glycoproteins and proteoglycans ubiq uitous, but many are molecules with well-defined and important biological functions. The list of molecules that fall into this category grows daily; interferon, immunoglobulins, certain hormones, many cell surface recep tors, and viral coat proteins are but a few examples. Thus, investigators with interests as diverse as viral replication. cell-cell interactions. poly isoprenoid synthesis, secretory processes, hormone responses, embryonic development, and immunology have become concerned with glycopro teins and proteoglycans. The objective of this book is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the biochemistry of these molecules. Coverage is by no means encyclopedic; rather the thrust is to emphasize the recent ad vances. The first chapter deals primarily with structural work on the oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins, but it will be apparent in it and in the succeeding two chapters on biosynthesis that not only do structural studies aid biosynthetic investigations, but that studies on biosynthesis often playa major role in elucidation of structure.

Accessible, engaging, and informative, it is the perfect introduction to the subject for students who may approach chemistry with apprehension. Its unique emphasis on metabolism and its kinetic underpinnings gives the text up-to-the-minute relevance for students investigating current public health concerns, such as obesity and diabetes. Biochemistry Second Edition will encourage students to explore the basics of chemistry and its influence on biological problems. Key Features: Provides an understanding of (mostly) enzymatic reactions that are responsible for the function and maintenance of living things. This innovative text for non-biochemistry majors includes introductory material at the beginning of each chapter that contextualizes chapter themes in real-life scenarios. Online supporting materials with further opportunities for research and investigation. Synthesis questions at the end of each chapter that encourage students to make connections between concepts and ideas, as well as develop critical-thinking skills. About the Author: Raymond S. Ochs is a biochemist with a career-long specialty in metabolism spanning 30 years. Previously, he has written the textbook Biochemistry, contributed the metabolism chapters to another text, Principles of Biochemistry, and co-edited a collection of articles published as Metabolic Regulation, and the recent monograph Metabolic Strucure and Regulation. His research interests concern major pathways of liver and muscle, including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, ureogenesis, fatty acid metabolism, glycogen metabolism, and control by cAMP, Ca2+, diacylglycerol, and AMPK. He is currently professor of pharmacy at St. John’s University in New York, teaching biochemistry, physiology, and medicinal chemistry.

Book excerpt: In the last decade there has been a great expansion in our knowledge of the existence, nature and functions of mammalian carbohydrate binding proteins. This book covers the structures and postulated functions for the major classes of mammalian carbohydrate binding proteins. These include intracellular lectins involved in diverse functions such as protein synthesis quality control, targetting of lysosomal enzymes and in the secretory pathway. In addition, several chapters are devoted to other major families of lectins that are found at the cell surface or in extracellular fluids which are involved in various recognition functions such as cell-cell interactions in inflammation and recognition of pathogen carbohydrates in host defence.

Since then, progress in the field of carbohydrates has been amazing with the unraveling their basic structure, biosynthesis, immunology, functions, and clinical uses, for pure carbohydrates and for protein-linked carbohydrates (glycoproteins and proteoglycans). The chapters in Carbohydrate Chemistry, Biology and Medical Applications present a logical sequence leading from the chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates, followed by their role in various pathological conditions, to carbohydrates as potential therapeutic and diagnostic agents. This book offers a detailed panoramic review of the chemistry and biology of carbohydrates for chemists, biologists and health professionals. Each chapter is authored by contributors expert in the particular area of research. Explains how carbohydrates are important to life Details the chemistry, biology and medical aspects of carbohydrates Interdisciplinary and international team of authors
