Experiments show that liquid wave inside atomizer has important influence on spray characteristics.

All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: With certain types of prefilming airblast atomizers, the manner in which the atomizing air impinges on the liquid sheet prohibits the wave formation that normally precedes the breakup of a liquid sheet into drops. Instead, the liquid is shattered almost instantaneously into drops of various sizes. This prompt atomization process is characterized by a broad range of drop sizes in the spray and by a lack of sensitivity of mean drop size to variations in liquid viscosity, atomizing air pressure, and initial liquid sheet thickness. Evidence is presented to show that which of these two different modes of atomization will occur in any given flow situation is largely dependent on the angle at which the atomizing air impinges on the liquid sheet. An equation for mean drop size, derived from the assumption that the main factor controlling prompt atomization is the ratio of the energy required for atomization to the kinetic energy of the atomizing air, is shown to provide a good fit to experimental data acquired from atomization studies on water and heating oil, carried out over wide ranges of air velocity, air/liquid ratio, and ambient air pressure.

The primary motivation for this is the need to identify the effect that various design features have upon the spray quality so that atomizers of optimum performance can be designed with a minimum of cost and complexity. Attention is focused upon such factors as the atomizer scale, configuration, the nature of fuel preparation before exposure to air, etc, for the most commonly used pre-filming and plain-jet airblast atomizers. The experimental mean drop size data included in this paper has been obtained through the use of well-established laser light-scattering techniques over a wide range of conditions. The general conclusion drawn from the data that is currently available is that the plain-jet airblast atomizers featuring multiple, transversely injected liquid jets into a swirling airstream yield spray quality comparable to that achieved by their pre-filming counterparts especially under high air pressure conditions. Experiments were conducted using a high-magnification 4×5 camera and a Phase/Doppler particle analyzer to evaluate the spray characteristics and atomizer performance. The primary parameters of interest are: liquid film breakup length, spray angle, drop size and trajectory. Observation of wave formation and propagation along the sheet surface was made to provide guidance in formulating mathematical models. Effects of air flow and nozzle design on atomization were examined for a wide range of flow conditions. Computational analysis was also utilized to predict the sheet breakup and subsequent drop behavior. This model considered a swirling sheet interacting with the surrounding air streams. The governing equations were formulated in a curvilinear coordinate system conforming to the film boundaries. Primary breakup is based upon linear stability analysis. The present model is capable of predicting the variations in thickness, trajectory, velocity, and angle of a liquid film as a function of nozzle geometry, operating conditions, fluid properties, and ambient conditions. Secondary breakup and drop history calculations were also included in the model to provide local drop size spectra. Agreement between the experimental and predicted breakup length and angle was excellent. The predictions of drop size, trajectory and other parameters were qualitatively correct. The present investigation demonstrated a realistic approach for simulating the breakup process and described the physical structure of a pure airblast atomizer spray.
