Book excerpt: This thesis aims to study the earliest heavily obscured phases of massive star formation in starburst (SB) galaxies through a multi-line analysis of the HC3N rotational transitions from the ground and vibrationally excited states (HC3N*). Due to its unique spectroscopic properties, we also discuss the potential of HC3N* as a tool to discern whether the obscured nuclei of galaxies are being heated by a SB or by an accreting super massive black hole (i.e. an active galactic nucleus; AGN). Star formation is one of the most relevant physical processes in the formation and evolution of a galaxy. In particular, the energy released back (feedback) to their surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) from massive stars profoundly impacts the galaxy’s evolution. In a SB galaxy, most star formation takes place in the nucleus and in the form of compact massive star clusters known as superstar clusters (SSCs), which represent one of the most extreme models of star formation. Another major source of energy that can profoundly impact the ISM of a galaxy is an AGN. Both massive star formation and the AGN can reduce the star formation efficiency of a galaxy and even halt future star formation through feedback mechanisms. Hence, to study the physical conditions of the gas driving the formation of SSCs and shed light on the formation of massive stars, which is still not well understood, we need to observe the earliest phases of massive star formation before significant feedback intervenes...

Although they are rare compared to low mass stars, they are the principal source of heavy elements and UV radiation, affecting the process of formation of stars and planets, and the physical, chemical, and morphological structure of galaxies. Star clusters form in dense "clumps" (~few parsecs in size) within giant molecular clouds, while individual stars form in cores (subparsec scale). An important step in the observational study of massive star formation is the identification and characterization of clumps. More detailed studies can then show how these clumps fragment into cores. Studies of clumps in our Galaxy will provide fundamental guidelines for the analysis of other galaxies, where individual clumps and cores cannot be resolved, and provide a catalog of interesting sources for observations of the Milky Way with a new generation of instruments, such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. Large-scale blind surveys of the Galactic plane at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths have recently been completed, allowing us to identify star forming clumps and improve our understanding of the early stages of massive stars. One of these studies, the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS), mapped the continuum emission at 1.1 mm over a large region of the northern Galactic plane at a resolution of 33'', identifying 8559 compact sources throughout the Galaxy. In this dissertation, I present observations of a sample of sources from the BGPS catalog, obtained with the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC-II). I present in this work 107 continuum emission maps at 350 microns at high angular resolution (8.5'') toward clump-like sources and construct a catalog of BGPS substructures. I estimate clump properties such as temperatures and multiplicity of substructures, and compare my results with 350 microns continuum maps from the Hi-GAL survey. I also present a detailed analysis, using molecular line and dust continuum observations, of the region G331.5-0.1, one of the most luminous regions of massive star formation in the Milky Way, located at the tangent region of the Norma spiral arm. Molecular line and millimeter continuum emission maps reveal the presence of six compact and luminous molecular clumps, with physical properties consistent with values found toward other massive star forming sources. This work includes the discovery of one of the most energetic and luminous molecular outflows known in the Galaxy, G331.512-0.103. For this high-speed outflow, I present ALMA observations that reveal a very compact, extremely young bipolar outflow and a more symmetric outflowing shocked shell surrounding a very small region of ionized gas. The source is one of the youngest examples of massive molecular outflows associated with the formation of a high-mass star.

This led to the discovery of the strong decrease of the cosmic star formation density measured from UV light as z=1, which, alongside Hector Flores, they confirmed as bolometric and dust independent. With Mathieu Puech, they then pioneered the 3D spectroscopy of distant galaxies, leading to a major increase of understanding of the dynamic state of distant galaxies evidenced by the scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation. This led them to propose, with the addition to the team of Myriam Rodrigues, that galactic disks may survive or be rebuilt in gas-rich mergers, a scenario that is consistent with contemporary cosmological simulations. Besides extensive observational experience, the authors have led, or are leading, several instruments implemented or to be implemented at the largest telescopes, including VLT/Giraffe, VLT/X-shooter, VLT/MOONS and E-ELT/MOSAIC. They have also developed several observational techniques in adaptive optics, and in sky subtraction for integral field units and fibre instruments.

Book excerpt: The star-formation-rate density of the universe has decreased by a factor of ~ 10 over the last 10 billion years, indicating a major change in either the efficiency with with galaxies form their stars or the availability of star-forming gas over the same time. In this thesis, we study the stellar populations within galaxies during the epoch of peak cosmic star-formation, ~ 10 billion years ago, using infrared observations of the ionized, neutral, and molecular phases of the interstellar medium (ISM) therein. In particular, we focus on two galaxies within this era, both of which have vigorous star-formation as well as active galactic nuclei (AGN), in an effort to learn more about the modes of star-formation at early times as well as the influence of AGN feedback on star-formation. As a first example, we examine the stellar population within 3C 368, a Fanaroff-Riley Class II (FR-II) galaxy at redshift 1.131. Our observations suggest a powerful AGN, accompanied by vigorous and extended star formation. We estimate the age of the starburst and find that it is nearly concurrent with the latest episode of AGN flaring, suggesting a link between the growth of the supermassive black hole and stellar population in this source. Our ionized-gas observations suggest a low gas-phase metallicity within this source, consistent with the weak molecular gas lines that we observe. We suggest that perhaps 3C 368 is accreting pristine molecular gas from an external source, thereby diluting its gas-phase metallicity. For our second example, we investigate the star-formation within SDP.11, a gravitationally-lensed galaxy at redshift 1.783. Our high-resolution gas and dust-continuum observations show intense star-formation in this source extended over several kiloparsecs. Gravitational-lens modeling further indicates that the star formation in this source is extended over a 3-5 kpc rotating disk, suggesting that the starburst present here may not be the result of a major merger, as is the case for local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), but some other mechanism. The findings presented in this thesis support the idea of a different mode of star-formation being present in high-redshift galaxies. In contrast to local ULIRGs, which have intense star-formation confined to their centers, we find kiloparsec-scale star-forming disks present in galaxies during the epoch of peak cosmic star-formation. While local star-forming galaxies tend to be the product of major-mergers, high-redshift starburst galaxies may well be the product of another process, perhaps accretion of material from the cosmic web.
