Book excerpt: The ratio between the two decay rates, Gamma(neutral-K2 to 2 neutral-pions)/Gamma(neutral-K1 to 2 neutral-pions), was studied by comparing the 2 neutral-pions decays in the neutral-K2 beam to those in the regenerated neutral-K1 beam. The advantage of this method is that the result is insensitive to detection efficiency. No free decays neutral-K2 to 2 neutral-pions were observed above the 3 neutral-pion background. On the other hand, 2 neutral-pions decays of neutral-K1 produced in the tungsten regenerator were clearly observed. The comparison of the free decay data with the regeneration data leads to the upper limit of 0.000009 for this ratio. (Author).

The energy spectrum of generated gamma-rays was obtained for the center-of-mass system of the neutral-K2 and used to measure the branching ratio (neutral-K2 to 2 neutral-pions)/(neutral-K2 to all modes). An upper limit of 0.0031 was obtained by normalizing to the neutral-K2 to 3 neutral-pion decay mode. (Author).

Twenty-nine candidates were found for this decay mode. However, 12 plus or minus 7 of these events can originate from the neutral-K2 to 3 neutral-pion mode and the CP-violating neutral-K to 2 neutral-pion decay. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that 5 plus or minus of the 12 events are likely to originate from the 3 neutral-pion decays, leaving 7 plus or minus events which may be ascribed to 2 neutral-pion decays. The corresponding branching ratios are: Rate (neutral-K2 to gamma) (neutral-K to all modes) = (1.3 plus or minus 0.6) x 0.0001; Rate 9neutral-K2 to 2 neutral pion)/Rate (Neutral-K2 to all modes) = (1.2 + 1.5 or -1.2) x 0.001.

The tools developed are used to explain its theoretical basis and a clear discussion is given of the critical experimental evidence which underpins it. A thorough account is given of quark flavour and neutrino oscillations based on published experimental results, including some from running experiments. A simple introduction to the Higgs sector of the SM is given. This explains the key idea of how spontaneous symmetry breaking can generate particle masses without violating the underlying gauge symmetry. A key feature of this book is that it gives an accessible explanation of the discovery of the Higgs boson, including the advanced statistical techniques required. The final chapter gives an introduction to LHC physics beyond the standard model and the techniques used in searches for new physics. There is an outline of the shortcomings of the SM and a discussion of possible solutions and future experiments to resolve these outstanding questions.
