Research on the magnetism of surfaces, ultrathin films and multilayers has increased dramatically during recent years. This development was triggered by the discovery of coupling between ferromagnetic layers across nonmagnetic spacer layers and of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems of reduced dimension using various micro and nanofabrication techniques has become a subject of special interest. A selection of invited and contributed papers presented at the Symposium and accepted for publication is contained in this volume. The contents of these proceedings are organized into seven sections. Book excerpt: As conventional electronics approach the physical limits of size and speed, desire for more capable and energy efficient technologies has driven studies of the individual and collective behavior of electron spins within solid state materials to achieve new forms of information processing. Recent developments in this field of spintronics have led to the discovery particle-like magnetic textures called magnetic skyrmions where spins are arranged in a swirling, vortex-like pattern. To advance the understanding of materials capable of stabilizing magnetic skyrmions and the mechanisms that govern their stability and dynamical properties, we use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. The research presented here builds on the connection between the physical and magnetic structure at the surface of materials. First, we observe novel surface structures and investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of Cr(001) and Fe/Ir(111), two systems that can be used to characterize the magnetic tip of the scanning tunneling microscope. Next, we detail a technique to determine the grain structure of B20-type magnetic materials FeGe and MnGe, where the structural chirality is known to determine the chirality of the magnetic textures. The surface termination, stacking order of the layered atomic lattice, and grain chirality can all be identified by analysis of the atomic corrugation and insights from density functional theory calculations. Finally, we observe novel topological spin textures at the surface of MnGe(111). The stabilization of these is correlated to structural deformation of the film, and their three-dimensional structure is deduced based on comparison of the spin-polarized imaging with micromagnetic simulations.

The contributions come from acknowledged leaders in the field who each give authoritative accounts of key fundamental aspects of nanomagnetism to which they have themselves made a major contribution. After a brief introduction by the editors, Wu first surveys the fundamental properties of magnetic nanostructures. The interlayer exchange interactions within magnetic multilayer structures is next discussed by Stiles. Camley then discusses the static, dynamic and thermal properties of magnetic multilayers and nanostructures, followed by an account of the phenomenon of exchange anisotropy by Berkowitz and Kodama. This latter phenomenon is widely in current read head devices for example. In order to provide new insight into the atomic details of metal film structure and the nanoscopic details of magnetic domains, efforts were made to study thin metal films on tungsten single crystals using both scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spin polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). Difficulties were encountered with the as-delivered SPLEEM instrument which required extensive efforts to rectify. STM investigators were directed towards understanding the structure of multilayer metal films on W(111) and Al2O3(0001). Atomic models for a number of different and complex surface structures are derived for Au films on W(l10) for coverages between 0.5 and 5 monolayers. STM studies of sputter deposited Pt films on sapphire substrates, for use as seed layers for epitaxial spin valves, are described. By varying the Pt layer thickness and deposition temperature, continuous epitaxial thin films were developed. An epitaxial spin valve was constructed and assessed by magneto-transport measurements. Future opportunities for improved understanding of magnetic and electrical phenomena in thin films are briefly described. p1.

Book excerpt: Material systems that combine magnetism and topology have garnered intense interest recently due to predictions of a variety of phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, chiral topological edge states, magnetoelectric effects, and Weyl semimetal and axion insulator phases. In this dissertation scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) are used to investigate the structural and electronic properties of several materials that exist at the intersection of topology and magnetism such as topological insulators, van der Waals layered materials, two-dimensional magnets, and intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Specifically, STM was used to confirm the growth quality and properties of thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy including Bi2Se3, SnSe2, MnSe, and Fe3GeTe2. In the van der Waals heterostructure SnSe2/Bi2Se3 a moiré pattern was observed which was found to be correlated to a set of localized electronic states in STS measurements. STM was also used to provide feedback for the growth of the heterostructure MnSe/Bi2Se3, which led to successful growth of partial monolayers of MnSe. In Fe3GeTe2, a magnetic field dependent Kondo lattice behavior was observed as well as a ferromagnetic hysteresis loop using spin-polarized STM. In addition, this work reports the first STM study of the recently experimentally verified intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI) MnBi2Se4. Its atomic and layered properties are found to reasonably match theoretical predictions. Two different terminations of its layered structure are observed on the surface with distinct electronic properties. In-gap states are observed near some step edges which could be related to predicted topological edge states. Another AFM TI, the related material MnBi2Te4, was also studied in which nanoscale surface manipulation using an STM tip was demonstrated.

Book excerpt: Many properties of the thin films are different from the bulk value and in many cases, depend dramatically on the film thickness. In the metallic ultra-thin films epitaxially grown on the semiconductor substrate, the conduction electrons are confined by the vacuum and metal-semiconductor interface. When the film thickness is comparable to the electron Fermi wavelength, this confinement will produce discrete energy levels known as quantum well states (QWS), which dramatically modify the electronic structures of the thin film and this is called quantum size effect (QSE). QSE will have a profound effect on a lot of physical properties of the thin films. Among various systems exhibiting QSE, Pb/Si (111) is the most widely studied one and exhibits the richest phenomena in QSE. In this study, a home made low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy (LT-STM/S) was used to study the superconductivities of the Pb thin films. Quantum oscillations of the superconductivity have been observed for the films down to 4 monolayer and the oscillation amplitude increases as the film gets thinner. To resolve the discrepancies between the superconductivities measured with ex-situ transport and in-situ STS. We also studied the influence of Au overlay on the Pb thin films with LT-STM/S, and found out the deposition of Au on Pb dramatically roughened the Pb films. Finally, we successfully grew large scale near perfect 2ML Pb films. There are two types of films which exhibit different Moiré patterns. LT-STS studies revealed there is big difference in the superconductivity Tc of these two films, both of which decreased dramatically from that of the 4ML film.
