Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the performance of several code synchronization methods that could be used in the Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) communication system. These methods include the sliding correlator, transmitted reference, sequential estimation, and three types of matched filters. The matched filters are the baseband matched filter, delay line matched filter, and the convolver. The criteria used for the evaluation of these synchronization methods are theoretical synchronization times and probability of bit-error. Advantages and disadvantages of each synchronization method are described and a method is recommended to be tested in the existing AFIT DSS system prototype. The effect of adding a PLL circuit to the AFIT system needs to be investigated, especially the effect on the bit-error curve measured by James Stephens when he built the AFIT system. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to advanced radiocommunication, discussing the merits and operational aspects of spread spectrum signalling. Spread spectrum modulation is emerging as one of the most important tools for combatting a wide range of problems usually encountered in radiocommunication. For military applications the signalling is able to resist difficulties deliberately introduced by an enemy, such as jamming and eavesdropping. For civil application, the efficient signal multiplexing and multipath rejection capability is of great interest. The price paid however is the need for very complex processing of the radio signals. This task put great challenges on new technologies and design, and it is only recently that operational systems have started to emerge from the laboratories. The book starts by comparing spread spectrum modulation and conventional modulation methods, and then discusses demodulation, which requires both special acquisition and synchronisation techniques. The electronic warfare scenario is introduced, discussing the principles of various spreading techniques and possible countermeasures. The coding for bandwidth spreading in a direct sequence spread spectrum system is treated by discussing the most common codes and their different figures of merit with respect to multipath, code division multiplexing and signal concealment. The book also illustrates the possible benefits, as well as limits to the use of new hardware technology to accomplish the various functions necessary for successful operation of a spread spectrum system. The effect of the propagation environment on spread spectrum is treated both analytically and through reported experiments and simulations. Finally the book considers the task of designing a complete communication network and discusses the usefulness and technology for additional interference suppressing techniques suitable to work with spread spectrum systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an investigation into the modelling and performance of sequence synchronisation in Chaos-based Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (CDS-SS) communication systems with the aims of identifying the existing gaps in research and suggesting a new and accurate modelling approach. The CDS-SS systems offer physical layer security without the need for a significant increase in computation or power requirements. This is significant when conventional encryption techniques cannot be used on secure communication systems because of their high power requirements as well as computational intensity. The main focus of this thesis is the problem of synchronising chaos-based spreading sequences. The modelling approaches previously used for chaos-based spreading codes do not take their non-binary nature into account and are not accurate as a result. This thesis extends the existing analysis in the literature to include CDS-SS synchronisation in presence of channel fading. Subsequently, an accurate approach is developed for modelling the synchronisation block of a CDS-SS system. This approach is based on the statistical description of chaos-based spreading codes cross- and auto-correlation functions and is termed chaos correlation statistics (CCS). To verify the validity of this approach, the acquisition stage of a CDS-SS synchronisation block is modelled using three scenarios: noise, fading and interleaving. It has been shown that the CCS method makes an accurate prediction of the acquisition phase performance for all three scenarios considered. The CCS method is also used to model a CDS-SS tracking loop statistically with high accuracy as verified by comparison with numerical analysis results. The effects of tracking loop errors and timing jitter on the probability of error have been derived for the same three scenarios mentioned above. These newly derived probability of error equations are verified by extensive simulation results. Overall it is concluded that sequence synchronisation for CDS-SS systems is possible and the CCS method is a suitable tool for accurate prediction of synchronisation performance in CDS-SS systems. Also, the CCS approach can be used in any scenario in which accurate modelling of the correlation function of non-binary spreading sequences is needed.
