Over the past decade, plasma engineering became a significant part of aerospace engineering, material processing, medicine, geosciences, etc. One of the main goals of plasma research is to discover new perspectives in a wide range of research areas. It makes plasma engineering a truly interdisciplinary subject. Recently, a significant interest in the aerospace community was caused by the possibility of an active flow control using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators. A number of groups tried to explain the physics of the experimentally observed phenomena. However, the developed models could hardly explain the DBD phenomena even qualitatively. This thesis presents the first complete, comprehensive, physically-based model, which tracks all essential physics of the DBD plasma actuators and utilizes modern numerical capabilities for efficient simulations. By using the developed model, the physics of the plasma actuators was explained. Based on the understanding of the operation of the conventional DBD, driven by a sinusoidal voltage, a novel configuration was proposed. The sinusoidal driving voltage was substituted by the repetitive nanosecond pulses superimposed on the bias voltage. The advantages of the proposed concept over the conventional one were experimentally validated. The developed model demonstrated flexibility for different plasma engineering areas. The model can be used not only for a description of the DBD plasma actuators, but also for a number of problems involving the gas discharges. By using the developed model, plasma generation by the ferroelectric plasma source, which is used in fusion technology, was explained. In the area of material processing, a significant interest was caused by an apparent possibility of precise high intensity ultra-short laser pulse drilling with negligible melt production. However, the experiments did not validate the theories proposed in literature. In order to explain the experimental data and analyze the possibility of reduction of melt generation, a new model for laser pulse drilling was developed in this thesis. The model comprehensively describes laser-material interaction and explains the significant amount of melt production in the case of ultra-short laser pulses. The results of the simulations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Book excerpt: This book offers a review of the use of extended ablation plasmas as nonlinear media for HHG of high-order harmonic generation (HHG). The book describes the different experimental approaches, shows the advantages and limitations regarding HHG efficiency and discusses the particular processes that take place at longer interaction lengths, including propagation and quasi-phase matching effects. It describes the most recent approaches to harmonic generation in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) range with the use of extended plasma plumes, and how these differ from more commonly-used gas-jet sources. The main focus is on studies using extended plasmas, but some new findings from HHG experiments in narrow plasma plumes are also discussed. It also describes how quasi-phase-matching in modulated plasmas, as demonstrated in recent studies, has revealed different means of tuning enhanced harmonic groups in the XUV region. After an introduction to the fundamental theoretical and experimental aspects of HHG, a review of the most important results of HHG in narrow plasmas is presented, including recent studies of small-sized plasma plumes as emitters of high-order harmonics. In Chapter 2, various findings in the application of extended plasmas for harmonic generation are analyzed. One of the most important applications of extended plasmas, the quasi-phase-matching of generated harmonics, is demonstrated in Chapter 3, including various approaches to the modification of perforated plasma plumes. Chapter 4 depicts the nonlinear optical features of extended plasmas produced on the surfaces of different non-metal materials. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the analysis of new opportunities for extended plasma induced HHG. The advantages of the application of long plasma plumes for HHG, such as resonance enhancement and double-pulse method, are discussed in Chapter 6. Finally, a summary section brings together all of these findings and discuss the perspectives of extended plasma formations for efficient HHG and nonlinear optical plasma spectroscopy. The book will be useful for students and scholars working in this highly multidisciplinary domain involving material science, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy. It brings the new researcher to the very frontier of the physics of the interaction between laser and extended plasma; for the expert it will serve as an essential guide and indicate directions for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is proposed here to continue their program in the development of theories and models capable of describing the varied phenomena expected to influence the propagation of ultra-intense, ultra-short laser pulses with particular emphasis on guided propagation. This program builds upon expertise already developed over the years through collaborations with the NSF funded experimental effort lead by Professor Howard Milchberg here at Maryland, and in addition the research group at the Ecole Polytechnique in France. As in the past, close coupling between theory and experiment will continue. The main effort of the proposed research will center on the development of computational models and analytic theories of intense laser pulse propagation and guiding structures. In particular, they will use their simulation code WAKE to study propagation in plasma channels, in dielectric capillaries and in gases where self focusing is important. At present this code simulates the two-dimensional propagation (radial coordinate, axial coordinate and time) of short pulses in gas/plasma media. The plasma is treated either as an ensemble of particles which respond to the ponderomotive force of the laser and the self consistent electric and magnetic fields created in the wake of pulse or as a fluid. the plasma particle motion is treated kinetically and relativistically allowing for study of intense pulses that result in complete cavitation of the plasma. The gas is treated as a nonlinear medium with rate equations describing the various stages of ionization. A number of important physics issues will be addressed during the program. These include (1) studies of propagation in plasma channels, (2) investigation of plasma channel nonuniformities caused by parametric excitation of channel modes, (3) propagation in dielectric capillaries including harmonic generation and ionization scattering, (4) self guided propagation in gas, (5) studies of the ionization scattering instability recently identified theoretically and experimentally in the group, and (6) studies of propagation in cluster plasmas. New models will be developed for the harmonic generation of radiation and these will be incorporated in the modeling and simulation.

Book excerpt: Processes occurring during high-temperature heating of plasmas have been studied experimentally by focusing laser emission of ultrashort duration on the surface of lithium deuteride. Experiments included the shadow photography of plasma with illumination by ultrashort pulses and the photo-registration of the dispersion of plasma with the aid of an image inverter, as well as the time dependence of laser pulse reflection and the measurement of the electron temperature of plasma with respect to its X-ray radiation. The basic processes which accompany the heating of plasma by ultrashort pulses are examined theoretically within the framework of approximations based upon the results of experiments.

Book excerpt: This book presents some fundamental aspects of plasma technology that are important for beginners interested to start research in the area of plasma technology. These include the properties of plasma, methods of plasma generation and basic plasma diagnostic techniques. It also discusses several low cost plasma devices, including pulsed plasma sources such as plasma focus, pulsed capillary discharge, vacuum spark and exploding wire; as well as low temperature plasmas such as glow discharge and dielectric barrier discharge which the authors believe may have potential applications in industry. The treatments are experimental rather than theoretical, although some theoretical background is provided where appropriate. The principles of operation of these devices are also reviewed and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than four years after the initial proposal of the Plasma Wake-field Accelerator (PWFA), it continues to be the object of much investigation, due to the promise of the ultra-high accelerating gradients that can exist in relativistic plasma waves driven in the wake of charged particle beams. These large amplitude plasma wake-fields are of interest in the laboratory, both for the wealth of basic nonlinear plasma wave phenomena which can be studied, as well as for the applications of acceleration of focusing of electrons and positrons in future linear colliders. Plasma wake-field waves are also of importance in nature, due to their possible role in direct cosmic ray acceleration. The purpose of the present work is to review the recent experimental advances made in PWFA research at Argonne National Laboratory, in which many interesting beam and plasma phenomena have been observed. Emphasis is given to discussion of the nonlinear aspects of the PWFA beam-plasma interaction. 29 refs., 13 figs.
