Book excerpt: Momentum relaxation times for hot electrons in individual valleys in germanium were calculated by extending the theory of Reik and Risken. The net growth rate was calculated for two-stream instability at 77 K for an applied electric field of 1000 V/cm. The damping of the plasma wave due to collisions of hot carriers in the valleys -2- through -4-, which provide shielding for the slow electrons in the first valley, is appreciable but damping due to collision of slow electrons is even more serious. Reducing the lattice temperature to 4 K will not improve the situation much, and increasing the doping to raise the plasma frequency does not appear to sufficiently overcome the collisional damping, at least within the doping range for which the present theory is valid (less than 10 to the 18th power/cc). The InSb photoconductive submillimeter wave detector was improved by the use of high purity InSb. Improved bismuth sample holders eliminated the cleavage of trigonal direction bismuth samples due to thermal stresses. However, the drift velocities obtainable are still only marginally sufficient to produce two-stream instabilities before heating and melting of the sample occurs. Experiments to observe the instabilities with an InSb detection system having a sensitivity of approximately minus 40 dbm were unsuccessful. (Author).

Book excerpt: Difficulties were encountered in obtaining a fast-response infrared detector for two-stream instabilities studies with pyrolytic graphite. A zinc-doped germanium detector appears to be the best detector available in the present state-ofthe-art and even with this detector the long wavelength cutoff is 40 microns, which falls short of the desired range of 5 to 75 microns. Experimental work was concerned principally with collective-phenomena instabilities in the solidstate plasma in n-type indium antimonide (InSb) at 77 K. Oscillations were measured from 33 to 12,000 Mc at power levels ranging from 0 down to -70 dbm. (Author).

Book excerpt: A physical basis for the amplification of an rf signal by the interaction between counterstreaming beams of negative and positive charges is presented. The description and analysis for this discrete-velocity double-stream amplification process provides a simplified analogy to the operation of the double-stream amplifier, utilizing pyrolytic graphite, under investigation. The characteristics of pyrolytic graphite that are important to the existence of double-stream instabilities are discussed. The effective masses of the holes and electrons are extremely small so that the long relaxation times required for the two-stream instability process are possible. It is shown that carrier mobilities and densities can be determined from three separate measurements.

Book excerpt: The computer results for the two-stream instability in pyrolytic graphite (PG) and bismuth (Bi) have been obtained. The instability frequency for the acoustical mode in the optimum crystalline direction (trigonal) is approximately 500 GHz wavelength = 0.6 mm) at the frequency of maximum growth rate. The current density required at the threshold of the instability is approximately 15 amp/sq mil. For PG, the corresponding frequency and current density requirement in the a-plane is 3 x 13 to the 13th power cps (wavelength = 10 microns) and 35 amp/sq mil. Experiments with PG samples of larger cross-sectional area have been unsuccessful even though the detection system sensitivity has been improved. Further experiments will be concentrated in Bi using an indium antimonide submillimeter detector operating at liquid helium temperature. (Author).

Book excerpt: A perturbation analysis is carried out for a nonlinear beam-plasma system in which a modulated electron beam passes through a stationary cold-electron plasma in the presence of a very strong axial magnetic field. Electron crossover effects are neglected. The generation of harmonics and the mixing of two signals occur within the valid range of signal levels for this analysis. Specific computer results are presented and discussed. An experimental study program for harmonic generation and coupling schemes in beam-plasma systems is outlined. The device consists of a xenon plasma generated by two hot-cathode Penning discharges and an electron beam that can be modulated and demodulated via short helix-type slow-wave structures. This method of coupling is compared with elliptic cavity couplers placed directly around the plasma column. Interactions in one-dimensional, spatially nonuniform beam-plasma systems are analyzed using the coupled-mode approach. The analysis applies to both the Penning ion gauge plasma and the gas discharge plasma. Some closed-form solutions as well as computer results are shown. A general nonlinear theory of beam-plasma systems is developed using a Lagrangian approach. The theory may also be used to investigate two-stream systems. The computer solution of the equations is outlined. (Author).

Book excerpt: The possibility of generating a microwave signal by means of an interaction between electron streams and various anisotropic media is investigated. In particular, properties of microwave slow-wave systems made of plasmas and pyrolytic graphites are studied to determine the feasibility of utilizing such slow-wave systems as circuits in beam-type microwave oscillators. Results of an experimental study on the surface-wave mode (backward-wave) of propagation in annular plasma columns is presented. Properties of the positive column of a dc discharge contained within two co-axial glass tubings are measured, and some basic differences between the discharge column and the ideal model of the plasma used for the analysis are pointed out. The density distribution is shown to be non-uniform, and the variation of the density profile with axial magnetic field is noted. Surface-wave modes of propagation predicted from the uniform quiescent plasma model are observed experimentally. The attenuation of the wave is observed to increase rapidly when a small magnetic field in the axial direction is applied. A theory of resonance absorption mechanism which occurs as a result of a gross density inhomogeneity is presented as a possible explanation for the enhanced attenuation observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this program were to discover and demonstrate useful slow-wave structures of chemically vapor deposited materials. Such structures promise the simplicity, ruggedness, and high temperature capability desired for millimeter devices. Slow-wave structures were to employ an anisotropic conducting sheet either from the anisotropic electrical conductivity of some of the materials or from layered or ruled conducting arrays. Structures tested were the Karp line and simulated interdigital and meander lines which employed the conductor sheath with periodic edge contacts. No CVD material was found with sufficiently high bulk anisotropy to provide low-loss uniform sheet structures. Thin layers of CVD zirconium diboride and boron nitride were found to have good bond strength but deposition irregularities, requiring further process development, prevented tests of microwave samples. Sheaths of ZrB2 on BN suffered from nonuniform deposits which can be corrected by the use of a larger furnace. Similar arrays of fine lines etched in copper on plastic substrates were used to demonstrate slow-wave propagation at S-band in the Karp line and the interdigital line. Theoretical analyses were performed treating wave propagation in infinite anisotropic layered media, in parallel plate waveguides containing an anisotropic sheath, in rectangular waveguides coupled through an anisotropic wall and in interdigital lines composed of an array of fine wires. The application of anisotropic conductors to admittance wall amplifiers was also analyzed. (Author).
