Book excerpt: In this book, the author focuses on the physics behind dew, breaths figures, and dropwise condensation phenomena to introduce scientists, engineers and students to the many original processes involved in condensation. Consisting of 15 Chapters, 18 Appendices and over 500 references, the reader learns the needed theoretical backgrounds and formulae to understand the complexity of dropwise condensation. Heat and mass transfer, nucleation and growth on various substrates are considered (solid, liquid, plastic, undergoing phase change or micro-patterned substrates). The particular role of thermal or geometrical discontinuities where growth can be enhanced or reduced, dynamical aspects of self-diffusion, problems related to drop collection by gravity and the optics of dropwise condensation are all discussed. Although the content mainly deals with condensation from humid air, it can readily be generalized to condensation of any substance. The specificities of pure vapor condensation (e.g. steam) are also examined. Numerous images are provided within the text to illustrate the physics. This book is meant for those studying or researching dew and dropwise condensation, but also for individuals wishing to develop their knowledge on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is focused mostly on the exposition of analytical methods for the solution of problems of strong phase change. A new theoretical model is proved useful in describing, with acceptable accuracy, problems of strong evaporation and condensation. The book is the first to treat the problem of asymmetry for evaporation/condensation. A semi-empirical model for the process is proposed for purposes of practical calculation of the process of strong evaporation. The “limiting schemes” of the vapor bubble growth are analyzed. The thermo-hydrodynamic problem of evaporating meniscus of a thin liquid film on a heated surface is considered. A theoretical analysis of the problem of evaporation of a drop levitating over a vapor cushion is performed. The problem of vapor condensation upon a transversal flow around a horizontal cylinder is considered. The second edition is extended by (i) the conjugate “strong evaporation - heat conduction” problem, (ii) the influence of accommodation coefficients on intensive processes of evaporation and condensation, (iii) the problem of supersonic condensation. This book is the first to present a comprehensive theoretical approach of boiling problems: nucleate boiling, superfluid helium phase transition, similarity between pseudo-boiling and subcritical pressure nucleate boiling. The target audience primarily comprises research experts in the field of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

Book excerpt: This research studied the effects of evaporative spray cooling on air-air ejector performance. Experimental data was collected for the purpose of validating computational simulations. This was done by modifying an existing air-air ejector to accommodate four spray flow nozzles which were used to atomize cooling water. The only parameter that was varied throughout the study was the mass flow rate of cooling water. One single phase (air) case and four spray flow cases where performed and analyzed. The purpose of the single phase experiment was to have a baseline for the air-air ejector performance and isolate the sources of experimental error contributed by spray flow. Three specialized multiphase flow instruments were designed and fabricated by the author to measure, gas phase temperatures, spray mass flow rates, and mixture total pressures. A computational study was performed using the collected experimental data for inlet continuous phase and spray mass flow as boundary conditions for equivalent simulations. A temperature gradient modified turbulence model was written by the author to better predict the mixing rates found experimentally which was used for the duration of this research. Secondary droplet breakup was modeled by the author using empirical correlations following preliminary simulations recognizing the deficiencies of commercially available breakup models. Comparison of experimental and computational cases produced mixed results. It was found that the experimental gas temperature instrument performed poorly for the local droplet fluxes encountered during testing. The spray sampling probe showed more promising results with two integrated mass flows agreeing within 6% of computational simulations. The total pressure probe solved the issue of pressure port clogging, but measurements were representative of mixture density which made an inferred velocity calculation difficult. It was found that evaporation of spray flow before the nozzle exit plane caused a reduction in dynamic pressure and a reduction in back pressure. A full scale simulation was performed to determine the effects of scaling on evaporative spray cooling performance. It was found that for the geometrically similar full scale model, the total droplet surface area and particle residence times scaled up with the model which increased cooling performance.

This revision includes new case histories, the latest techniques, and new designs to comply with recently passed legislation. By keeping the book up to date with new, emerging topics, Boyce ensures that this book will remain the standard and most widely used book in this field. The new Third Edition of the Gas Turbine Engineering Hand Book updates the book to cover the new generation of Advanced gas Turbines. It examines the benefit and some of the major problems that have been encountered by these new turbines. The book keeps abreast of the environmental changes and the industries answer to these new regulations. A new chapter on case histories has been added to enable the engineer in the field to keep abreast of problems that are being encountered and the solutions that have resulted in solving them. Comprehensive treatment of Gas Turbines from Design to Operation and Maintenance. In depth treatment of Compressors with emphasis on surge, rotating stall, and choke; Combustors with emphasis on Dry Low NOx Combustors; and Turbines with emphasis on Metallurgy and new cooling schemes. An excellent introductory book for the student and field engineers A special maintenance section dealing with the advanced gas turbines, and special diagnostic charts have been provided that will enable the reader to troubleshoot problems he encounters in the field The third edition consists of many Case Histories of Gas Turbine problems. This should enable the field engineer to avoid some of these same generic problems
