Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a coordinated rocket and ground based study to investigate Equatorial Spread-F irregularities. Measurements by the Jicamarca backscatter radar, ionosondes, airglow instrumentation and of radio scintillations were correlated with high spatial resolution measurements of electron densities, particle fluxes and VLF-ELF fields from a rocket probe. Experimentally the authors find: (1) Very high positive and negative electron density gradients are responsible for the enhanced radar echoes; (2) Energetic particles are not part of the Spread-F phenomena; (3) wave measurements are strongly correlated with the Doppler character of the radar signals; and (4) That there is a one to one correspondence of the large scale irregularities responsible for scintillations of satellite radio transmissions, and ionosonde spread echoes with the small scale irregularities responsible for the backscatter of VHF radar signals. Implications of the data are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of measurements of the properties of equatorial ionospheric irregularities were made at Kwajalein, M.I. in August 1977 and July-August 1978. These measurements, involved coordinated ground based and in-situ sensors. The ARPA Long-range Tracking and Instrumentation Radar (ALTAIR), obtained backscatter and transmission data during five nights in August 1977 and eight nights in July-August 1978. This report describes the ALTAIR data from the night of 11 August 1978 which yield direct quantitative measurements of 1 m and 3/8 m irregularities and of plasma depleted regions. These plasma depleted regions, previously predicted on the basis of theoretical speculation and in-situ data, appear to be associated with the decay phase and not the generative phase of the field aligned irregularities.

Book excerpt: Ionospheric irregularities in the F region were studied using three techniques; the occurrence of spread-F echoes on ionograms, by direct backscatter recordings at 27.8 MHz and a study of scintillations occurring at SHF frequencies on satellite transmissions. Nairobi ionograms for 1964-70 have been analyzed for spread-F occurrence. Direct backscattered echoes on 27.8 MHz from patches of irregularities in the F-region have been recorded over a twelve-month period. Recordings of SHF transmission from the satellite Intelstat III-F4 were made at the East African Telescommunications Company's station near Nairobi during March - May 1971. Book excerpt: Ionospheric scintillation analyses have been conducted on several fronts, and are discussed here in the light of: (1) recent observations, current theories, and coordinated studies of equatorial scintillations; (2) morphology and analytical formulas at high latitudes; (3) measurements associated with ionospheric heating. F-region irregularities are viewed from the concepts of localized origin of patches, in-situ spectral measurements, and coexistence of km- and m-scale irregularities. The dynamics of equatorial patch formation, motion, and decay are also discussed. Generation of irregularities during underdense heating was observed for the first time. Total electron content data have been utilized to derive the statistics of the variability of ionospheric time delay in the Mediterranean region for the current solar maximum period. The implications of the results on modern satellite ranging systems are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F-region irregularities near the equator are viewed from the concept of the temporal structure of UHF scintillations and the electron content depletions associated with VHF, UHF and GHz scintillations. Near the equatorial anomaly crest, the solar cycle effect on GHz scintillation and the depolarization of VHF satellite signals are probed along with electron density irregularities using in-situ data coupled with VHF/GHJz scintillation. Occurrence of nighttime VHF scintillation in the Indian sector near the anomaly is addressed. In the midlatitude sector, coordinated incoherent scatter radar, total electron content and scintillation measurements are studied in the investigation of the generation of km-scale irregularities which spatial variability of total electron content is analyzed in the Mediterranean region. At high latitudes, in-situ measurements provide the opportunity for scintillation modelling which low-energy electron precipitation measurements have been correlated with scintillations/TEC in the auroral oval. The nature of ionospheric irregularities generated by high-power, high-frequency heating has also been investigated and shown to vary between two sites studied.

Book excerpt: The orbiting HiLat satellite launched in 1983 offered an opportunity for studying ionospheric scintillation parameters in relation to in-situ measurements of ionization density, drift velocity, field-aligned current, and particle precipitation during the sunspot minimum period. This report discusses results of a morphological study based on observations of scintillations and total electron content (TEC) at the auroral oval station at Tromso, Norway, during the period Dec 1983 - Oct 1985. The geometrical enhancement of scintillations observed during alignment of the propagation with the local magnetic L-shell is shown to be the most consistent and conspicuous feature of scintillations in the nighttime auroral oval. The dynamics of the spatial and temporal extent of this region are illustrated in the invariant latitude/magnetic local time grid. Steepening of phase spectral slope in the geometrical enhancement region is indicative of the presence of L-shell aligned sheet-like irregularities at long scale lengths. The seasonal variation of TEC determined from the differential Doppler measurements of HiLat transmissions is discussed in relation to the in-situ density measurements at 830 km. The results are also used to illustrate the dependence of ionospheric structure parameters on short-term variability of solar activity during the sunspot minimum period. This study provides an insight into the nature of magnetospheric coupling with the ionosphere at high latitudes.

Book excerpt: Earth is part of solar system and it has some special features, which makes it beautiful and has conditions conducive for the humans to survive on it. It is well known that the main source of energy for the Earth is Sun. So any changes in, of and on the sun, affects the Earth's environment also called as Space weather. Any changes in Earth's atmosphere due to space weather may affect the Earth and in turn, the human life. Like this, there could be many phenomena which could spontaneously occur on the Earth's, in turn affecting the human life directly (seismic activity, variation in Earth's magnetic field, increase in temperature due to greenhouse effect, to name a few)The objective of this book is paying attention to study the short and long term variation over anomaly crest region. The quantitative understanding of low latitude ionosphere is still incomplete. It is needed to explore more therefore. In present work the behavior of characteristics of spread F, sporadic E, variations over the anomaly crest region using some space and ground based experiments. In this work, we are considering the 23rd solar cycle.

Book excerpt: The Earth's equatorial ionosphere most often shows the occurrence of large plasma density and velocity fluctuations with a broad range of scale sizes and amplitudes. These night time ionospheric irregularities in the F-region are commonly referred to as equatorial spread F (ESF) or plasma bubbles (EPBs). This dissertation focuses on analysis of ground-based optical and radar measurements to investigate the development and dynamics of ESF, which can significantly disrupt radio communication and GPS navigation systems. OI (630.0 nm) airglow image data were obtained by the Utah State University all-sky CCD camera, primarily during the equinox period, from three different longitudinal sectors under similar solar flux conditions: Christmas Island in the Central Pacific Ocean, Ascension Island in South Atlantic, and Brasilia and Cariri in Brazil. Well-defined magnetic field-aligned depletions were observed from each of these sites enabling detailed measurements of their morphology and dynamics. These data have also been used to investigate day-to-day and longitudinal variations in the evolution and distribution of the plasma bubbles, and their nocturnal zonal drift velocities. In particular, comparative optical measurements at different longitudinal sectors illustrated interesting findings. During the post midnight period, the data from Christmas Island consistently showed nearly constant eastward bubble velocity at a much higher value (~80 m/s) than expected, while data from Ascension Island exhibited a most unusual shear motion of the bubble structure, up to 55 m/s, on one occasion with westward drift at low latitude and eastward at higher latitudes, evident within the field of view of the camera. In addition, long-term radar observations during 1996-2006 from Jicamarca, Peru have been used to study the climatology of post-sunset ESF irregularities. Results showed that the spread F onset times did not change much with solar flux and that their onset heights increased linearly from solar minimum to solar maximum. On average, radar plume onset occurred earlier with increasing solar flux, and plume onset and peak altitudes increased with solar activity. The F-region upward drift velocities that precede spread F onset increased from solar minimum to solar maximum, and were approximately proportional to the maximum prereversal drift peak velocities.
