Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to develop models of pulsed and continuous wave (CW) CO2 lasers on a personal computer, and to explore optimization of the computed output power using response surface methodology (RSM). The first program is based on a four-level point model of pulsed Co2 laser that predicts the temperature rise and the effects of temperature on the power, energy, and gain of the pulsed laser. The second program, derived from the first, is based on a four-level point model of a continuous wave CO2 laser and calculates the power, gain, small-signal gain, and saturation flux of the CW laser. Both models were verified and extensively validated against published data with good results. Finally, this study explored the optimization of the CW laser model using RSM and found an operating point for maximum power at 10 torr and 4% CO2. Several recommendations are included for upgrading the CO2 laser models and continuing the optimization.

Book excerpt: The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This book is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. It also provides a thorough theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many applications now require micro sized holes that are difficult to produce with conventional methods. The entrance of lasers in the industry has brought about a better method for producing these holes. However the ultra-short pulse lasers that are normally used are extremely expensive and require many pulses to remove the material due to the small amount of energy they deposit. The objective of this research is to examine the feasibility of laser ablation using a 300W, CW Single Mode fiber laser which has high continuous power output for each pulse and has excellent beam quality. The results show that laser ablation occurs when a 100mm lens is used with pulse durations at 40 microseconds or below. Using one 18 microsecond pulse, a blind hole of 43.6 microns in diameter and 23.6 microns in depth with an aspect ratio of 0.54 can be created with little heat affected zone. This performance is comparable to nanosecond lasers, but with much higher hole depth per pulse. It was also found that the pulse duration must be short enough so that the ablating effect of the initial spike of an enhanced pulse is not nullified due to melting. At longer pulse durations (50 microseconds or more), raised surfaces are created instead of holes.

Book excerpt: Laser ablation is the process of removing material from a solid (or occasionally liquid) surface by irradiating it with a laser beam. At low laser flux, the material is heated by the absorbed laser energy and evaporates or sublimates. At high laser flux, the material is typically converted to a plasma. Usually, laser ablation refers to removing material with a pulsed laser, but it is possible to ablate material with a continuous wave laser beam if the laser intensity is high enough. This book presents current research in the study of laser ablation from across the globe. Topics discussed herein include double-pulse laser ablation of solid targets in ambient gas; using laser ablation ICP-MS and its potential in sampling archaeological skeletal materials; and numerical modelling of laser-matter interactions.

Book excerpt: The design and development of a longitudinally excited continuous wave carbon dioxide laser is discussed. Theory related to laser design and development is presented in chapters 1 and 2. A brief overview of the literature behind the CO2 laser is also outlined. In chapter 3 the design and development of the laser are discussed in detail and illustrations to help explain the intricacies of the various processes have been included. In this booked series of experimental results obtained with the developed CW CO2 laser that focusses on the basic characterisation of the laser are discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two electromagnetic waves are crossed in a plasma, an electron plasma wave will be resonantly excited, provided the difference frequency of the pump waves is matched to the local plasma frequency. The beat-wave process in a plasma is of great importance in the fields of accelerator physics, plasma physics and fusion energy research. One application of a beat wave is Magneto-Inertial Fusion (MIF). In MIF, a magnetic field could be seeded by beat-wave process and amplified afterwards by plasma compression, to suppress the electron thermal diffusion. Another application is as a new diagnostics technique in magnetic confinement fusion. By measuring the pump waves and the beat wave, localized plasma density and temperature could be deduced. In this thesis, we will present our research on beat wave experiments using power unbalanced CO2 lasers. This thesis is mainly focused on the development of experimental instruments and initial testing results. Important issues in the instrument development, i.e. design of Transverse Excitation Atmospheric pressure (TEA) lasers, high-speed electromagnetic interference immune laser power measurement, will be discussed. First of all, we will present the design and development of high-power TEA and low-power Continuous Wave (CW) CO2 laser system. The peak power of the TEA CO2 laser is over 100 MW. Secondly, we will discuss the development of diagnostics system for the high-power CO2 lasers. A high-speed analog fiber-optic system with 3-dB bandwidth of 35 MHz is developed to measure the infrared laser power in an electrically hostile environment. Thirdly, we will describe the development of a high-density plasma source generated by pulsed arc discharge and the plasma density measurement system. Finally, we will present the beat-wave experiment setup using unbalanced CO2 lasers in the high-density plasma target. Several important issues will be discussed, such as the optics damage problem and the scattered light shielding.

Book excerpt: Following the previous OWLS conferences devoted to optics in life sciences, the 5th Conference focused on recent achievements in applying lasers and optics in biomedicine and in the preservation of our cultural heritage. Particular attention is thus paid to laser diagnostics in medicine, interaction of laser radiation with biological tissue, and the development of new systems for these studies. The contributors to this volume cover such international research activities as photon migration in tissue, fibre optics, lasers in dermatology, ENT, cardiology, and in art conservation, imaging techniques in archaeology, laser technologies in contemporary art, and new laser and opto-electronic systems for biomedical and art-related studies.
