Book excerpt: Contained event samples, including 30 single-track muon-like events, 35 single-shower electron-like events, and 34 multiprong events, have been obtained from a 1.0 kiloton-year exposure of the Soudan 2 detector. A sample of 15 multiprong events which are partially contained has also been isolated. Properties of these events are used to examine the verity of the atmospheric neutrino flavor ratio anomaly as reported by the Kamiokande and IMB-3 water Cherenkov experiments. The compatibility of the Soudan data with each of two `new physics` explanations for the anomaly, namely proton decay and neutrino oscillations, is investigated. We examine background processes which have not been explicitly treated by the water Cherenkov detectors. Chapters discuss underground non-accelerator particle physics, the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and its interpretation, the Soudan 2 detector and event selection, reconstruction of neutrino events, rock event contamination in Soudan `quasi-elastic` samples, contained multiprong events in Soudan 2, neutrino flavor composition of the multiprong sample, partially contained events in Soudan 2, nucleon decay in Soudan 2, and a summary and discussion. 12 refs., 124 figs., 28 tabs., 7 appendices.

Book excerpt: Soudan 2 is an 1100-ton tracking calorimeter which is being built 713 m underground to search for nucleon decay and to study neutrino and cosmic-ray physics. The detector is assembled from 256 identical 4.3-ton calorimeter modules. Each module consists of finely segmented iron and drift tubes, and records three space coordinates and dE/dx for every tube crossing. It is surrounded on all sides by a 1700 m2 active shield of proportional tubes. The first atmospheric neutrino interactions and a magnetic monopole search are described. Prospects for cosmic ray studies are summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground proton decay detectors record a sizeable number of atmospheric neutrino-induced events. These neutrinos come primarily from the decay of pions and muons produced in cosmic ray showers in the earth's atmosphere. The expected flux ratio of muon neutrinos to electron neutrinos traversing an underground detector,??/?{sub e}, is about 2. The combined effects of detector systematics and nuclear cross section differences between?{sub mu} and?{sub e} interactions typically reduce the measured?{sub mu}/?3 event ratio to about 1. Over the last decade, both the Kamioka detector in Japan and the IMB detector in the United States have made high-statistics measurements of the atmospheric neutrino event ratio. Both groups have presented strong experimental evidence that the underground?{sub mu}/?{sub e} event ratio is substantially smaller than predicted. In both cases, a statistically significant deficit of muon neutrino-induced events is measured. One possible explanation of the muon neutrino deficit is that these neutrinos are undergoing flavor oscillations between their production points in the atmosphere and their interaction points in underground detectors. An MSW effect interpretation of solar neutrino experiments implies a?{sub e} →?{sub mu} oscillation region in?m2-sin2(2?) space at least two orders of magnitude lower in?m2 than the best fit point of the Kamioka result. It is therefore usually assumed that the relevant flavor oscillation for atmospheric muon neutrinos would be?{sub mu} →?{sub r}. The Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector is now approaching completion and collecting data. It will be able to make low-background measurements of atmospheric neutrinos in the next few years to check the possibility that atmospheric neutrinos undergo detectable flavor oscillations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been made of the ability of the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector to distinguish between showering and non-showering particles, utilizing several different pattern recognition techniques. This work has direct application in the determination of the [nu]{sub {mu}}/[nu]{sub e} ratio for atmospheric neutrino induced events. The results of the application of these techniques to Monte Carlo data and to calibration data from the ISIS test beam are presented.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second part of this dissertation, a study of atmospheric neutrino reaction rates using multiprong events is presented. Based on kinematic and topological properties of 177 multiprong data events, an algorithm was devised to match a set of Monte Carlo events to each data event. The algorithm requires that for each Monte Carlo event selected, the total visible energy and the net event momentum are nearly equal to the corresponding values for the data event, and that the flavor tags and prong counts are compatible. In order to take into account numu → nutau oscillation observed previously in atmospheric neutrino detectors (Super-Kamiokande, Soudan 2 and MACRO), each Monte Carlo event is weighted with neutrino oscillation probability corresponding to Deltam2 = 3 x 10-3 eV2 and sin 2theta = 1. From analysis of the matched Monte Carlo events, we conclude that 39.7 +/- 3.1% of multiprong data events in Soudan 2 have nu mu flavor.

Book Synopsis The Atmospheric Neutrino Flavor Ratio in Soudan 2 by :
Download or read book The Atmospheric Neutrino Flavor Ratio in Soudan 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have measured the flavor ratio of ratios (R) in atmospheric neutrino interactions using a 1.52 kton-year exposure of Soudan 2. We find R = 0.67 ± 0.15{sub -0.06}{sup +0.04}. This value is about 2[sigma] from the expected value of 1.0 and is consistent with the anomalous ratios measured by the Kamiokande and IMB experiments. We note that since our acceptance matrix is different from those of the water Cherenkov experiments we would not expect to measure the same value of R, unless R=1.
