Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitch Finley's warmhearted recollection of growing up Catholic is more than nostalgia. It's a mixture of fond memories, gentle humor, and lasting gratitude for what he learned in Catholic schools--simple and profound lessons that gave him a solid foundation for living in times marked by turmoil and change. The lessons he writes about include: Life Is Worth Living; The World Deserves Our Attention; Life Needs Prayer Like a Tree Needs Water; Everybody Has a Vocation; The Universe Is Sacramental; God Loves Everybody the Same; Nobody's Perfect; Jesus Is with Us; Everybody Has a Guardian Angel. One need not be Catholic to enjoy this gentle celebration of truths that last. Mitch Finley's journey is one that each of us has taken--and continues to take--in our own way. His joyful reminder is simply cause for more gratitude and plenty of delight.

Book excerpt: Being a Catholic means being merciful, 'the willingness to enter into the chaos of another.' This book explores the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy and considers how we invoke mercy both in the church in the Eucharistic liturgy and in our homes, with family and friends. Interspersed are three meditations on mercy: on September 11, on being a priest in light of the scandal in Boston, on the world of HIV/AIDS.

Download or read book The Works of Mercy written by James F. Keenan, SJ and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Works of Mercy introduces readers to the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy, inviting readers to explore mercy in our everyday lives. James Keenan defines mercy as “the willingness to enter into the chaos of another,” and it is one of the central elements of the Christian faith. Over the centuries Christians have defined themselves by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and caring for the sick. The book explores the traditional works of mercy and also looks at how mercy enters into ordinary life, in the way we care for our families and the way we care for ourselves. The third edition features more inclusive language to resonate with readers of all backgrounds, new case studies and examples—from health care to the prison system, and new material on how Pope Francis and his papacy reflect mercy.

Book Synopsis Lazarus at the Table by : Bernard F. Evans
Download or read book Lazarus at the Table written by Bernard F. Evans and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lazarus at the Tale is the fruit of more than two decades of instructing students in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. For most of these years Bernard Evans has taught graduate students. Lately he also teaches lay Catholics engaged in parish ministry and enrolled in diocesan ministry formation programs. This book is written specifically for the latter group. Evans agrees with the bishops of the United States who insist that any Catholic education that does not include Catholic social teaching is not fully Catholic. And so he writes clearly, concisely, and convincingly about how Catholic social teaching addresses such contemporary issues as human dignity, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, war, family, marriage, poverty, superfluous income, just wages, unions, peace, solidarity, and many more. Excerpts from the church's official teachings in papal documents abound throughout the book. Bernard Evans holds the Virgil Michel Ecumenical Chair in Rural Social Ministries at Saint John's School of Theology'seminary, Collegeville, Minnesota.
Book Synopsis The Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy by : Mitch Finley
Download or read book The Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy written by Mitch Finley and published by Liguori Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do these works of mercy apply specifically to the individual spiritual seeker? Does practicing mercy in the realm of body and soul have anything to do with your relationship with Jesus Christ? Yes, yes, and yes indeed! Jesus Christ showed us what it means to live as "embodied spirits," body and soul united into one, single nature. He taught us the relationship between our body and soul, how they relate, that each must be cared for and attended to; that to practice mercy means providing for and nurturing our neighbor, body and soul. Rooted in Scripture and sacred Tradition, The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy: Living Christian Love and Compassion communicates the mercy of Jesus Christ -- and how to model that mercy in your own life -- in ways having both bodily and spiritual effects. As noted in the Introduction, Mitch Finley presents "a spirituality for regular folks who live in the real, everyday world...a program of faith for the home and the workplace and all the ordinary places in-between that we all inhabit on a daily basis." What does it mean to "admonish the sinner"? To "bear wrongs patiently"? To "clothe the naked" and "bury the dead"? It means to share in the mercy of Christ. Mitch Finley offers practical advice and firm encouragement in guiding you to living the Christian love and compassion of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis History of Jacksonville, Florida and Vicinity, 1513 to 1924 by : T. Frederick Davis
Download or read book History of Jacksonville, Florida and Vicinity, 1513 to 1924 written by T. Frederick Davis and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2021 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two times there was a wholesale destruction of Jacksonville's official records – in the War Between the States and by the fire of May 3, 1901. The author's effort in this work was to collect all of the available authentic matter for permanent preservation in book form. The record closes as of December 31, 1924. The record is derived from many sources – long forgotten books and pamphlets; old letters and diaries that have been stored away as family memorials of the past; newspapers beginning with the St. Augustine Herald in 1822 (on file at the Congressional Library at Washington) fragmentary for the early years, but extremely valuable for historical research; almost a complete file of local newspapers from 1875 to date; from the unpublished statements of old residents of conditions and outstanding events within the period of their clear recollection; and from a multitude of other sources of reliability. The search through the highways and the byways for local history was in the spare moments of the author stretching over a period of a score of years, a pastime "hobby" with no idea of making money out of it. No attempt has been made to discuss the merits of any incident, but only to present the facts, just as they were and just as they are, from the records and sources indicated.
Download or read book Sacred Men written by Keith L. Camacho and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1944 and 1949 the United States Navy held a war crimes tribunal that tried Japanese nationals and members of Guam's indigenous Chamorro population who had worked for Japan's military government. In Sacred Men Keith L. Camacho traces the tribunal's legacy and its role in shaping contemporary domestic and international laws regarding combatants, jurisdiction, and property. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben's notions of bare life and Chamorro concepts of retribution, Camacho demonstrates how the U.S. tribunal used and justified the imprisonment, torture, murder, and exiling of accused Japanese and Chamorro war criminals in order to institute a new American political order. This U.S. disciplinary logic in Guam, Camacho argues, continues to directly inform the ideology used to justify the Guantánamo Bay detention center, the torture and enhanced interrogation of enemy combatants, and the American carceral state.
Book Synopsis Redemption and Restoration by : David Matzko McCarthy
Download or read book Redemption and Restoration written by David Matzko McCarthy and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church teaches that punishment must have a constructive and redemptive purpose and that it be coupled with treatment and, when possible, restitution. Rehabilitation and restoration must include the spiritual dimension of healing and hope. Since the publication of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop's 2000 pastoral statement on restorative justice, the conversation surrounding the need for criminal justice reform and restorative justice has moved forward. Redemption and Restoration responds from a Catholic perspective to help form an educational campaign to equip Catholics and their leaders to participate in the national conversation on this issue, create the programs needed to assist in healing the harm caused by crime, and restore our communities. The book develops the traditional Catholic understanding of justice, offers a theological understanding of restorative justice, explains how it can be implemented, and reflects on the practical arguments for restorative justice. Grounded in the stories of real people, Redemption and Restoration helps readers gain a deeper understanding of how this affects us all as a country and a church. It includes discussion questions to engage groups in exploring issues related to restorative justice.
