Book excerpt: Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are the enabling technology for a new era of underwater monitoring and actuation applications. However, there still is a long road ahead until we reach a technological maturity capable of empowering high-density large deployment of UWSNs. To the date hereof, the scientific community is yet investigating the principles that will guide the design of networking protocols for UWSNs. This is because the principles that guide the design of protocols for terrestrial wireless sensor networks cannot be applied for an UWSN since it uses the acoustic channel instead of radio-frequency-based channel. This thesis provides a general discussion for high-fidelity and energy-efficient data collection in UWSNs. In the first part of this thesis, we propose and study the symbiotic design of topology control and opportunistic routing protocols for UWSNs. We propose the CTC and DTC topology control algorithms that rely on the depth adjustment of the underwater nodes to cope with the communication void region problem. In addition, we propose an analytical framework to study and evaluate our mobility-assisted approach in comparison to the classical bypassing and power control-based approaches. Moreover, we develop the GEDAR routing protocol for mobile UWSNs. GEDAR is the first OR protocol employing our innovative depth adjustment-based topology control methodology to re-actively cope with communication void regions. In the second part of this thesis, we study opportunistic routing (OR) underneath duty-cycling in UWSNs. We propose an analytical framework to investigate the joint design of opportunistic routing and duty cycle protocols for UWSNs. While duty-cycling conserves energy, it changes the effective UWSN density. Therefore, OR is proposed to guarantee a suitable one-hop density of awake neighbors to cope with the poor and time-varying link quality of the acoustic channel. In addition, we propose an analytical framework to study the impact of heterogeneous and on-the-fly sleep interval adjustment in OR underneath duty-cycling in UWSNs. The proposed model is aimed to provide insights for the future design of protocols towards a prolonged UWSN lifetime. The developed solutions have been extensively compared to related work either analytically or through simulations. The obtained results show the potentials of them in several scenarios of UWSNs. In turn, the devised analytical frameworks have been providing significant insights that will guide future developments of routing and duty-cycling protocols for several scenarios and setting of UWSNs.

The novel networking paradigm of UWSN is facing a totally different operating environment than the ground based wireless sensor networks. This introduces new challenges such as huge propagation delays, and limited acoustic link capacity with high attenuation factors. These new challenges have their own impact on the design of most of the networking layers preventing researchers from using the same layers used for other networks. The most affected layers are the Physical, Medium Access Control (MAC), Routing and Transport layers. This work will introduce novel routing and MAC layers' protocols for UWSNs. The routing protocol will adopt the minimum spanning tree algorithm and focus on maximizing the connectivity of the network, which means maximizing the total number of nodes connected to the root or the sink in this case. The protocol will try also to provide a minimum hop connection for all the nodes in the network taking into account the residual energy, location information and number of children at the next hop node. The other contribution of this work is a MAC Protocol which will incorporate the topology information provided by the routing protocol to minimize the collisions and energy wastage in data transmission. The MAC Protocol will also try to shorten the queuing delays at the intermediate nodes for a message traveling from source to the sink. A comparison will be conducted with other existing routing and MAC protocols. The routing protocol will be tested and compared with the E-Span spanning tree algorithm for data aggregation. The MAC protocol will be compared with Park's protocol ... in terms of performance metrics like end-to-end delay and the number of collisions. Book excerpt: Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UW-ASNs) have recently been proposed as a way to explore and observe the ocean, which covers two-thirds of the Earth's surface. In particular, we consider a SEA Swarm (Sensor Equipped Aquatic Swarm) architecture for short-term ad hoc real-time aquatic exploration, such as oil and chemical spill monitoring, submarine detection, and surveillance, by deploying drifting sensor nodes (e.g., UCSD Drogues) to the venue of interest that form a swarm and move as a group with the ocean oceanic current. Each sensor monitors local underwater activities and reports critical data or events in real-time using acoustic multi-hop routing to a distant data collection center, e.g., surface buoys or Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). As SEA Swarm architecture adopts acoustic links as a means of communication, it is accordingly confronted with long propagation delays, low bandwidth, and high transmission power consumption. To put SEA Swarm architecture into practical use and alleviate these limitations, we propose the Delay-aware Opportunistic Transmission Scheduling (DOTS) algorithm to increase channel utilization by harnessing both temporal and spatial reuse. Extensive simulation results show that DOTS outperforms existing solutions, S-FAMA, DACAP, and CS-ALOHA in a line topology, in a highly competitive medium access star topology, and in a random topology with an underwater mobility by harnessing temporal and spatial reuse. Furthermore, in a SEA Swarm architecture, a sensor cloud that drifts with water currents and enables 4D (space and time) monitoring of local underwater events such as contaminants, marine life and intruders, is escorted at the surface by drifting sonobuoys that collect the data from underwater sensors via acoustic modems and report it in real-time via radio to a monitoring center. Thus, to realize SEA Swarm architecture, designing an efficient anycast routing algorithm for reliable underwater sensor event reporting to any one of the surface sonobuoys is imperative. Major challenges are the ocean current and the limited resources (bandwidth and energy). We address these challenges and propose two hydraulic pressure based anycast routing protocols, namely HydroCast and VAPR, which exploit the measured pressure levels to route data to surface buoys. The proposed routing protocols are validated via extensive simulations.

However, the design of efficient communication protocols for underwater sensor networks is still an open research problem due to the unique characteristics of the underwater acoustic communication channel such as limited bandwidth, high and variable propagation delays, and significant multipath and scattering. MIMO systems are able to exploit rich scattering and multipath fading to provide higher spectral efficiencies without increasing power and bandwidth. The objective of this research is to explore the capabilities of underwater MIMO links, and to leverage these from the perspective of higher layer protocols with a cross-layer design approach. First, a new medium access control protocol named UMIMO-MAC is proposed. UMIMO-MAC is designed to i) adaptively leverage the tradeoff between multiplexing and diversity gain according to channel conditions and application requirements, ii) select suitable transmit power to reduce energy consumption, and iii) efficiently exploit the UW channel, minimizing the impact of the long propagation delay on the channel utilization efficiency. To achieve the objectives above, UMIMO-MAC is based on a two-way handshake protocol. Multiple access by simultaneous and co-located transmissions is achieved by using different pseudo-orthogonal spreading codes. An algorithm is proposed that, in a cross-layer fashion, jointly selects optimal transmit power and transmission mode through the cooperation of transmitter and receiver to achieve the desired level of reliability and data rate according to application needs and channel condition. Second, distributed routing algorithms are introduced for delay-insensitive and delay-sensitive applications, with the objective of reducing the energy consumption by i) leveraging the tradeoff between multiplexing and diversity gain that characterizes MIMO links, and ii) allocating transmit power on suitable subcarriers according to channel conditions and application requirements. To achieve the objective above, each node jointly i) selects its next hop, ii) chooses a suitable transmission mode, and iii) assigns optimal transmit power on different subcarriers to achieve a target level of Quality of Service (QoS) in a cross-layer fashion. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed protocol is adaptive to the unique characteristics of the underwater acoustic communication channel, and achieves excellent performance through local cooperations between transmitter and receiver. Finally, we present our ongoing work on developing a reconfigurable underwater networking testbed based on the Teledyne Benthos Telesonar SM-75 modem. The testbed is designed with the objective of allowing researchers and developers to advance research activities in the field of underwater networking and communications through a flexible testbed platform. This platform allows playing, processing, and recording custom-defined acoustic waveforms to support reconfigurable physical layer experimentation with arbitrary transmission schemes.
