Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Study of Illinois Coals In the fifteen years which have intervened since the first study was made of the chemical composition and properties of the coals of the State, notable advancement has been made in methods of procedure in connection with such work. This result has naturally followed our increased knowledge and better understanding of the properties of this complex substance, but especially has it been caused by the marked changes which have occurred in the methods of purchasing coal, especially on the part of large consumers, whose contracts are based on specifications as to quality. This method has led to a care ful scrutiny of all processes yielding factors which enter into the final settlement. Small errors in large consignments may result in serious injustice to one or the other of the parties involved. These studies, therefore, have been especially directed to sampling, the conservation of moisture, and the determination of ash and of heat values. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition of the Ash of Illinois Coals Table 1 is a tabulation of analyses and sample descriptions assembled from the analytical files of the Survey. The table is arranged by the counties from which the coal samples were collected. Where available, analyses of ashes from face samples are shown first, followed by analyses of various prepared products. Since the analyses for each county represent samples of coals of different size, gravity, etc. And since coal preparation influences the ash composition, it is not possible to arrive at reliable county averages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sulfur Reduction of Illinois Coals, Vol. 1: Washability Studies The potential reduction in sulfur (and ash) that can be obtained with a coal can be determined by making float - and sink (washability) tests with the coal in a laboratory. As described in more detail later in this report, this process is essentially one of determining the weight percentages and chemical compositions of the material that is collected from liquid baths of different specific gravities The percentage of coal that floats is commonly called recovery, and the mater ial that sinks is often called reject. A commercial preparation plant cannot provide as precise a separation of float - and sink products as that obtained in the laboratory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nomenclature of the Megascopic Description of Illinois Coals It should be understood that comparison of brilliance of luster of different ingredients should be made between vitrain and clarain in the same coal and not between heterogeneous vitrains and clarains. The difference is a relative one only, the relation being one that exists in the same coal bed or in the same block of coal after removal from the bed. The relative brightness of vitrain and clarain in the same coal is likely to depend upon the amount of fine or micro-vitrain present in the clarain. At any rate a clarain composed of a large proportion of such micro Vitrain will be bright. Ou the other hand, even without mega scopic evidence of the presence of vitrain, clarain is bright. The explanation in microscopic terminology is that clarain is com posed of a predominating proportion of translucent material, whether this material consists of anthraxylon or of attritus. This is a fundamental cause of their megascopic appearance, but is of course not discoverable megascopically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal The Object of this bulletin is to present the results of a study of (1) the effect of moisture upon the specific gravity of coal, and (2) the methods of determining the specific gravity of coal. The commercial aspects of the problem are discussed, and values are given for the specific gravity of coal from many of the mining districts of the State of Illinois. The specific gravity of bright and dull coal is also considered. The investigation was carried on under the direction of Professor H. H. Stock of the University of Illinois, who suggested the problem and whose advice and criticism were of great value. Experiments were conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and field trips were made to the Vermilion county coal field, where samples of coal were collected from a number of mines. Other samples were obtained from various sources. The author is indebted to Professor E. A. Holbrook of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois for assistance in securing sam ples of coal and for valuable suggestions and criticisms during the prog ress of the work; and also to Professor S. W. Parr of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Illinois, and Mr. Fred H. Kay, of the Illinois State Geological Survey, for advice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Study of Coal: Influence of Structural Irregularities Upon the Chemical Character of No. 6 Coal in Franklin and Williamson Counties, Illinois; Distribution of Sulfur in Illinois Coals and Its Geological Implications Within the large area of the Illinois coal basin, the rank of coals varies through almost the entire range of the high-volatile group, in general increasing southward or southeastward across the basin. The rate of variation within the greater part of the area is so gradual that the chemical character of any bed is well represented by average values for fairly large areas, such, for example, as are represented by individual counties. This is particularly true of the calorific value for the dry, mineral matter-free coal - what has been designated the unit coal calorific value. County average unit coal values have for several years been recommended by the State Geological Survey as generally applicable to the coal in individual mines in any county. It has been known for some time, however, that the rate of varia tion in rank is considerably more rapid across the counties lying along the southern margin of the coal basin than across the counties to the north, so that in Franklin, Williamson, Jackson, Saline and Gallatin counties, analyses of individual samples are likely to vary more from county averages than is the case north of the border belt. Inasmuch as structural conditions affecting the coal beds are more irregular in this marginal belt than elsewhere in the State it has been suspected that variations in the chemical character of the coal, indicative of varia tions in rank, would eventually, with the accumulation of sufficient analytical and structural data, be found definitely related to structural irregularities. It was also realized that the discovery of such relation ships would probably necessitate the eventual abandonment oi county average values as the basis for standardization and the adoption cf values based upon the character of the coal bed within more natural structural units. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sulfur Reduction of Illinois Coals: Washability Studies; Part 2 Part 1 of this study indicated that the washability characteristics of Illinois coals crushed to a maximum size of 1 inches usually did not vary significantly from the washability characteristics of the same coals when crushed to a maximum size of inch. Because the results with the two size ranges were similar and since the -inch maximum size would allow the use of a smaller quantity of coal for the washability tests, a -inch maximum size was used for all tests described in this report. The minimum size of 28 mesh (tyler screen series) was selected because (1) it was considered the finest size of Illinois coal that could be readily separated by gravity methods, and (2) only a small proportion of the coal would be finer than 28 mesh after crushing and screening in stages to the maximum size of inch. During Part 1 of the investigation, a l-ton sample of raw coal, which generally was sampled in 20 to 30 increments through most of one shift of Oper ation, was obtained from the tipple; a few samples were obtained from the pit. None of the samples was considered representative of a mine's output. A differ ent method of sampling was used for the study described in this report. Instead of obtaining a l-ton sample, an approximately 80-pound sample, which will be referred to subsequently as a column sample, was cut from each of three freshly exposed coal faces at separate working areas of a mine. This procedure pro Vided a total sample of about 240 pounds per mine. Although these samples may not be representative of the output of the mine either, they are considered to be superior to those obtained by the tipple or pit-sampling procedure used in Part 1 of this study. Pace - channel samples, from which mineral bands of more than inch in thickness were excluded in accordance with U. S. Bureau of Mines procedures (holmes, also were cut from the same general locations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuel Tests With Illinois Coals The work of the department of Applied Chemistry has not only supplemented the work relating to boiler trials by furnish ing the composition and heating value of the coals used in these trials, but it has also examined and tested a large number of Illi nois coals not yet tested under boilers. In connection with this subject this department has perfected several new devices very useful to chemists and engineers, designed for making the ordin ary determinations of the heating values and composition of coals. The Parr calorimeter, one of these devices, has found ready sale among the operators of many of the power plants of the country as well as among the consulting chemists and fuel experts. It is expected that a separate bulletin will soon be published setting forth in detail many of the new methods which have been devel oped by this department, and giving the complete results of its investigations relating to Illinois coals. It is hoped that the tables of the chemical composition and heating values of Illinois coals, which form a part of this bulletin, will furnish engineers and manufacturers with useful information in this important field. With the above somewhat general statement in explanation of the character of this bulletin, it may now be advisable to refer more in detail to the special features which are intended to be brought out in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Weathering of Illinois Coals During Storage From these tests we conclude that double-screened coal from No. 5 and No. 6 seams in southern Illinois, in the sizes being supplied to metallurgical coke plants, can be stocked safely in contact with air, and without packing, during the six-months winter period at temperatures prevailing in the Chicago and central Illinois district. In summer appreciable oxidation occurs during storage, although to a greater extent with No. 6 coal than with No. 5. It appears, however, that for best coking results none of these coals should be stocked in the usual storage piles in warm weather longer than 30 days.
