Download or read book UNEP Year Book 2011 written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2011 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 8th Edition of the UN Environment Programme flagship report, The UNEP Year Book 2011, examines global emerging issues and provides the latest environmental science. it also highlights major environmental events and developments over the past year, and presents the most recent data and indicator trends. The ocean has become a global repository for much of the waste we produce. Scientists are concerned that plastic debris in the ocean can transport toxic substances which may end up in the food chain, causing potential harm to ecosystems and human health. The Year Book also explores the wider implications of the use of phosphorus in food production. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient whose supply is limited. Since demand for fertilizer in agriculture rocketed in the 20th century, large amounts of phosphorus are flowing into the environment. New perspectives are also emerging on how biodiversity conservation can be integrated in forest management. Forests are receiving increasing attention, not least because of their role in climate change mitigation. Halting loss of forest biodiversity is essential if forests are to adapt to mounting pressures, including climate change and pest outbreaks. The Year Book's overview of events and developments during 2010 shows how cutting edge science reveals new opportunities to mitigate climate change while improving air quality. Stimulated by technological innovation and green investments, renewable energy supply is growing rapidly. This and other developments are summarized in key environmental indicators that present the latest data and trends For The global environment.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Potassium Transport in Plants by : Dev T. Britto
Download or read book Mechanisms of Potassium Transport in Plants written by Dev T. Britto and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potassium (K+) is the most abundant ion in the plant cell, and is required for a wide array of functions, ranging from the maintenance of electrical potential gradients across cell membranes, to the generation of turgor, to the activation of numerous enzymes. The majority of these functions depends more or less directly upon the activities and regulation of membrane-bound K+ transport proteins, operating over a wide range of K+ concentrations. Here, we review the physiological aspects of potassium transport systems in the plasma membrane, re-examining fundamental problems in the field such as the distinctions between high- and low-affinity transport systems, the regulation of cellular K+ pools, and the generation of electrical potentials, placing these discussions in the context of recent discoveries in the molecular biology of K+ transport.
Book Synopsis Plant Nutrients and Abiotic Stress Tolerance by : Mirza Hasanuzzaman
Download or read book Plant Nutrients and Abiotic Stress Tolerance written by Mirza Hasanuzzaman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses many aspects of plant-nutrient-induced abiotic stress tolerance. It consists of 22 informative chapters on the basic role of plant nutrients and the latest research advances in the field of plant nutrients in abiotic stress tolerance as well as their practical applications. Today, plant nutrients are not only considered as food for plants, but also as regulators of numerous physiological processes including stress tolerance. They also interact with a number of biological molecules and signaling cascades. Although research work and review articles on the role of plant nutrients in abiotic stress tolerance have been published in a range of journals, annual reviews and book chapters, to date there has been no comprehensive book on this topic. As such, this timely book is a valuable resource for a wide audience, including plant scientists, agronomists, soil scientists, botanists, molecular biologists and environmental scientists.
Book Synopsis Rhizosphere Functioning and Structural Development as Complex Interplay between Plants, Microorganisms and Soil Minerals by : Carsten W. Mueller
Download or read book Rhizosphere Functioning and Structural Development as Complex Interplay between Plants, Microorganisms and Soil Minerals written by Carsten W. Mueller and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhizosphere, the soil volume, which is directly affected by root activity, is an important hot spot for a multitude of biotic and abiotic processes. Carbon transfer from plants to microorganisms and to soil takes place in these small volumes around living roots, creating chemical gradients and zones of microbial activity over distinct temporal and spatial scales. Hydraulic and biogeochemical properties of the rhizosphere and the formation of complex three-dimensional structures such as micro- and macroaggreates in turn, result from complex feedbacks between physical, chemical and biological processes. The aim of this Research Topic is to advance our understanding of rhizosphere interactions by collating 16 original contributions across disciplines, including original research, reviews and specific methods on the processes taking place in the rhizosphere, to shed new light on one of the most important interfaces for the diversity of life on earth.
