Book excerpt: The ability to exercise atomic level control over the structure and chemical composition of surface oxides formed on metal alloys is crucial towards understanding their corrosion resistance in various aqueous media. This is complicated by the fact that the kinetics of oxidation is vastly different for metals such as Al, Ni, Cu etc that make up constituents of alloys. We explore the use of photo-excitation to influence oxidation rates of different metals in an athermal manner and how this can be used in an elegant manner to control the composition and structure of ultra-thin (1-3nm) oxide films formed on alloy surfaces. Using high resolution XPS, NRA and EIS measurements, we explore the effects of photon-excitation on passive oxide growth on Al, Ni, Cu, Al-Ni, Al-Cu, and Al-Cu-Ni alloys and how it relates to the enhanced corrosion resistant properties of the native oxide films. The role of compositional control in affecting passivity breakdown of ultra-thin oxides is studied in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the history of the concepts critical to the discovery and development of aluminum, its alloys and the anodizing process are reviewed to provide a foundation for the challenges, achievements, and understanding of the complex relationship between the aluminum alloy and the reactions that occur during anodic oxidation. Empirical knowledge that has long sustained industrial anodizing is clarified by viewing the process as corrosion science, addressing each element of the anodizing circuit in terms of the Tafel Equation. This innovative approach enables a new level of understanding and engineering control for the mechanisms that occur as the oxide nucleates and grows, developing its characteristic highly ordered structure, which impact the practical function of the anodic aluminum oxide.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was structured to define the physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of anodized films by selecting widely differing anodic processes, systematically varying these processes, and carefully characterizing the resultant surfaces using the most advanced instrumental techniques. After defining the structure and character of the anodic film from the surface to the metal interface, a comparison of the relative stability of these surfaces was made by defining the point at which breakdown or hydration of the film occurred in salt spray and humid environments. Five distinct anodic systems were chosen for study in this program. These represented two porous systems, phosphoric acid and chromic acid, and three barrier layer systems: (1) ammonium chromate, (2) potassium/lithium nitrate eutectic salt, and (3) ammonium pentaborate in ethylene glycol. In each anodic system, electrical properties were recorded during anodization. Surfaces of each anodic coating were analyzed using electron diffraction to determine crystal structure, Auger electron spectroscopy to determine the chemistry, and scanning electron microscopy to characterize the thickness and morphology of the oxide.

Book excerpt: Characterization of a variety of electrochemical parameters associated with the corrosion of aluminum, Al-Cu, and Al-Si alloy thin films (~1-?m-thickness) in dilute hydrofluoric acid (HF) has been accomplished using electrochemical impedance spectros-copy (EIS). Phenomena characterized include the transition from passive to active dissolution with increasing HF concentration, determination of diffusional impedances associated with ionic transport through the passive oxide, detection of the initiation and repassivation of a population of metastable pits, changes in aluminum oxide resistivity and state of hydration at open circuit potential (OCP), and establishment of trends in oxide film growth with anodic potential. Impedance studies on model intermetallic phases and artificial pits were also conducted in order to aid in the interpretation of these phenomena. A survey of the analyses and interpretation methods utilized to obtain such information from impedance spectra is presented.
